I suspect all Vic and Lisa need to do to get a drink at PaizoCon is hold out a hand and cough politely :)

I doubt any of Paizo's staff even have to cough... Hmmm... I'm afraid my meaning was not clear.

How is this:

Purple Paizo Punch for everyone! Whoo!

I missed this seminar to attend a game, so I'm happy to get a chance to see it! I entered this past year, and was pretty sure I failed in the "cool, innovative item" department. The item was useful, followed the rules, written in the correct format, etc., but I felt the initial idea was weak. I asked for feedback to make sure my understanding of my own failings was correct, and to ensure there weren't other glaring flaws I was blind to. I was disappointed my item didn't make it, but want to say the ones that did definitely deserved to more than mine! I have something to work on, and plan to take that advice to heart. :)

Thanks for taking the time to give us comments and advice, guys, I really appreciate it!

Although Lisa and Ryan Dancey wouldn't let us pay for their food and drinks at lunch on Saturday.

That's cuz they're classy peeps, but I'm sure they appreciated the thought behind the gesture.

And thanks again for the lunch it was very cool.

Why did this panel have to be held while I had a game going on? :)

This.

I lost because I didn't submit anything. :-) (that and I would have had to bow out after the 2nd round had I got there because of work)

Russ Taylor wrote:

We kept Lisa well hydrated during the banquet. ;-)

Vic...I had a long drawn out response, but instead I'll keep it short.

I'm flattered you took the time to respond to me, and apparently thought enough of my insults to believe I was targeting the company as a whole. Now, you aren't all glorified copy pasters as Golarian is a very rich setting in whole, and there is alot of creativity involved.

However, to deny the fact that you copied, pasted the SRD and changed things would be just trying to fool yourself. If I took (and I am currently for a fan based re-write) the SRD and rewrote it for my Extreme Excursions (something I like to call it) and tried to deny that I didn't just basically copy and paste the rules and change how many of them worked, I would be delusional as well.

Doesn't mean I don't appreciate what has been done to the system and that it gives me a better alternative to 4th ed. I am a huge fan of Pathfinder, just not of some of the attitudes of those employed.

My goal was not to stir up anger, but to at least give you something to think about. Do I know that I am also being judged? Yes, do I care? No. I fully understand that what I say doesn't make me popular, but I don't see the harm in me saying it. Everyone else can kiss ass if they want to, that is their right, and until you take an action like banning me, it is my right as well.

You (amongst others) have brought up my attitude as disqualifying me from receiving work from Paizo. I understand that, but also am not bothered by it. Some consider Paizo the "big time". It might be, but as I've stated, not my cup of tea.

Does that mean I won't participate in the contest? Unless I'm officially barred from it, I probably will just because. But regardless, I'm not even thinking on that at this particular moment.

Honestly, I think everyone (especially the rest of Paizo) can learn from Neil. Because he has demonstrated the most restraint (second to Clark, who surprised me and caused me to second guess what I said) but Vic apparently cannot do so. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the next higher up came out to chew me out with "you'll never make it blah blah blah". If you're ok with opinions as long as their positive, then fine simply state that. I had a differing opinion, believed I was shown wrong by Clark/Neil, and made an apology. You still took offense.

Trolls seldom bring up valid points, but I believed I did. And in fact some of the other users have already brought up things I also agree with in response to this. So whatever happens from here on isn't because I wanted to continue this, but because YOU (Vic) did. I was done responding, but always there has to be someone else.

If I'm supposed to have "thick" skin to criticism, shouldn't you guys as well?

Not to continue the discussion in general but just as an FYI: There is no "next" higher up. Vic is the co-owner of the company.

Vistarius. Let it go.

A particular aspect of last year's Superstar contest bothered me so much, I had to walk away from these boards for about a month. To this day, I haven't gone back to see what happened after the first round. I don't even know who won.

And even I think you're acting childish right now. That should tell you something.

Now I feel bad for poor Vic, stuck on a fairly dry table, chasing after support calls. Then to add insult to injury I hand you a beer when your table had you all taken care of already.

And to get this thread back on track, here is my initial post:

Clark here, checking in from the Con.

The Superstar panel was AWESOME.

Neil had a great idea to do an item from scratch with audience participation. I rambled. Sean and Ryan were gods among men. And Neil was Neil.

Listen to the recording if you can. The seminar was really informative. It will be real helpful to designers for next year.

AND I hope that people take us up on our challenge and actually write up the item we came up with. A corset. Should be fun.

And frankly the item we came up with in an hour has all the potential to make the cut into the "Keep" folder.

Hope you guys enjoy!

Scarab Sages

Just to be clear; when you say 'corset', that covers any clothing that retains and reshapes the midriff, right?

Like Captain Kirk?
It doesn't have to be a lacy bustier with traffic-cone cups?

(Though, telling the butch player that if he wants to access the shape-shifting powers, he has to give us all a rendition of 'Lady Marmalade', is rather tempting....)

No worries! You can never have too many beers handed to you. That is one of those universal constants. :)

As for Vic, he isn't much of a drinker. Now if there was a really nice bottle of wine to be had, he would have lapped that up. Vic and I both LOVE good wine (not the crap they sell at the hotel). But Vic doesn't do beer.

That is too funny. I don't drink but my wife is a big wine fan , and one of her best friends, also a big wine fan, is ALSO named Lisa Stevens. She is also tall and blonde. She also lives not far from Redmond (Woodinville).

It's downright eerie!

That other Lisa Stevens is also very active in the local wine community. We are usually in the same wine clubs also, which can lead to confusion. I need to meet this Lisa someday. :)

Many women's corset did not have cups but instead chose to flatten the chest. There was a time when looking boyish was a virtue. Many women's corsets stop at or only outline the chest as well. Certainky the ones that I think of most have a band or demi cups that display the cleavage and push up but don't do a lot or even anything to seperate the chest providing a sort of shelf and wonderful cleavage. Just sayin'. =)

I have it on good authority (ie, from the lady herself), that Lisa obtained a masterwork knuckleduster recently...a rare item, only offered to a select few. She can truly be said to be 'Packing'.

The other sources are something I've been working towards for the past few years, and will come about when I'm ready for them to be. Working for Paizo as a freelancer is still slightly limiting compared to what I'm aiming for.

I know you're not supposed to feed the troll, but sometimes that's why you come to the zoo, right?

Every year I am amazed at the arrogance and lack of humility that the contest's losers (more on that term in a second) display, compared to the class and humility of the contest's winners. There is a connection. Figure it out.

RPG Superstar isn't the only avenue for getting discovered. It isn't the most consistent sometimes, it isn't always the most fair, and it certainly isn't the most painless and risk free. But it is by FAR the best.

It refines you and teaches you if you're willing to swallow the pill and listen.

No method for skipping decades of lonely mediocrity and crawling from one freelance job to the next while waiting on opportunity to show up in your inbox could be perfect. RPGS offers a chance to build a fan base, strut your best ideas under pressure and show prospective publishers an ability to grow. To accomplish what the game's best publishers never had a chance to. RPGS isn't perfect, but it's a better chance than most authors have ever had, and it's closer to perfect than perhaps any other method.

I've submitted for RPGS every year. I critiqued Boomer's stuff before he submitted the first year (and those were some fun emails). I always have a good but not good enough item and always feel that if I could get over the hump I'd shine. Me and fifty others each year. But I have listened and learned and improved on a lot of things, and even gotten some work by being a regular here. As have a lot of people. This contest only has one category of losers - those who come to win and not to learn or give their best effort. When you prefer to smart off at the most accomplished people in gaming because they didn't like your (clearly ridiculous) item, you aren't learning anything. You aren't improving at anything. And that kind of arrogance is not going to get you work or get you fans.

So, just thought I'd throw that in from a non-employee and non-judge. This contest is bad-ass, and offers committed, talented humble writers a chance to step up and play at the next level.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

Also, whatever magic avenues exist for finding Superstar level success outside of Superstar, please share. I note that selling four printings of a book (however small!) didn't do it. I note that being a super-talented Werecabbage (that's not me, but it is dozens of others) doesn't necessarily do it. I note that no Iron GM winner (some of the best story tellers and game managers ever) has accomplished it.

Some of us are trying a lot of avenues to win fans friends and work. There is no magic avenue. There's only patience and the willingness to listen.

And, Sean, I promise to dress business professional for every entry I make it to this year. : b

I'm glad you found it useful. That's why we held it. And I really appreciate Paizo making room for it on the convention schedule and all the other judges taking time out to participate on it. Hopefully, someone can organize something similar next year.

Edit: Whoops, never mind. Found it at the bottom of the thread that linked me here. For others like me who don't think things through, it's available at Know Direction.

What I learned from Superstar last year (and from actually publishing some stuff this year): text limits are there for a reason!

To avoid further confusion, I've edited the OP to include the current link to the Know Direction copy of the recording (and added a timestamp to that edit).

Which probably means we'll get people halfway through the thread wondering why people are saying the OP's link doesn't work... :)
