Grand Lodge *

I was very pleased to see the solution to level advancement in the Blog.

But I have a concern:

The money, Prestige and XP has been made equitable using either advancement track, yes.

But what about Boons?!

At the standard advancement track, PC "A" plays through 3 Scenarios, earns 1 level, 3 Scenarios worth of gold & Prestige and, assuming one of the Scenarios gives a Boon of a +2 Diplomacy Check while in Magnimar, gets that, too.

Meanwhile, PC "B" plays through the "slow" advancement track, plays 6 Scenarios, earns 1 level, 3 Scenarios worth of gold & Prestige, but, assuming twice the number of Boons, gets the +2 Diplomacy Check while in Magnimar AND a +2 Diplomacy Check in Katapesh.

Please Note: The Boons I mentioned are inventions of mine based on a couple I've seen. They do not represent any specific Scenarios that I know of.

I don't see how this would be unbalancing.

I think that this COULD be unbalancing if I had ever had the oportunity to use any of the location/race specific skill boons that I have received. As it is, nah, not so much.

Okay.

It just jumped out at me but I don't really play much in the Society. I think I've DM'ed 1/2 dozen Scenarios and played in about 1/2 dozen. And all that was a good year ago or more.

The more scenarios a PC plays, the more chances they have of suffering ongoing penalties like ability drain, disease, curses, not to mention character death. Since they'll be earning half-wealth, the opportunity cost of paying for restoration, remove curse, or raise dead is even higher. If a slight increase in the number of situational +2 bonuses the character receives offsets that a little bit, I'm fine with that.

Nah. They're already getting more opportunities for boons and item purchase from more chronicle sheets.

And more opportunity to play their character at the desired level, which was kinda the point.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

There are some very powerful/cool boons out there, none as pricey as a free raise dead but some are quite good.

Many Spoilers in the block.

Boons:

One time +10 to initiative, up to 3 free combat rerolls, up to 3 free skill rerolls, up 3 free spell re-memorizations, a free Decemvirate Stamped Wayfinder of awesomeness, permanent price discount on mundane gear, a lapdance from Thorne (the most powerful mage in all Absalom). I'm sure there are more out there as well.

So here's the changes you get from slow vs current.

Slow:
Twice as many opportunities to play
Twice as many boons
Twice as much consumables used
Twice as many chances for horrible things to happen to you.

If you're worried about optimizing every penny out of your character playing slow won't do you any better than fast. I'm fine with that.
