Cairn Stern |
Cairn was surprised that the old man had kept up with their steady pace throughout the day and that earned him some respect in the critical man's eyes. But he was skeptical about Everett's deduction that the coast was clear so while they set up their geear he set about walking around and getting a good look at the scenery and if anything was lying in ambush. He let corporal and his squadies know his intentions and stalked off welcoming any company if they so wished.
He called upon his mistress's guidance and scanned the area.

The Lost Voice |
The two cartographers began their setup as before, with Atin unpacking things from the pouch, while Everett took up a spyglass and began panning back and forth, calling out directions in some special terminology they used. The Corporal watched them for a minute and then turned to watch with the rest of the squad, pacing a ways out.
This area seemed to have been brushed smooth, with only pebbles and rocks that were no bigger than her fist. Given the way the winds blew yesterday though, as well as the gusts that they got today, if this was typical weather year-round, there was not going to be much in the way of protruding terrain. In a magical sense, there was nothing particularly special about this area like the one before it, save for that gentle 'pulling' from the city.
While the weather had eased, clouds remained in the sky, though they were not so heavy and dark as before. The wind had not ceased either. It was enough to gently pull at clothing, and steal parchment from any fool enough to leave it un-weighted. Some of the squad could see the small dust devils that it kicked up as it blew, dust-colored whorls that meandered in and out of sight.
It was Caern that spotted something that seemed to stand out. At least, it may have been something.. A pair of dust devils that moved differently.

Cairn wasnt familiar with the deserts ways but he could tell when something wasnt natural. He'd been watching the 'dust devils' as Everett called them far a while now and he didnt understand why those two moved in a more methodical manner. He hailed the Corporal and pointed at his suspicions.

...well it must be nothing since Viola wont stop brushing her damn hair long enough to look at me...Im starting to think this whole mercenary thing wasnt the brightest idea....certainly thought it would be more exciting...these other guys seem to be more intersted in staring at their own feet or picking their noses then watching for danger...and Im risking my neck for them?..bullsh1t...I might have to cut out of here on my watch and leave them to Pharasma's will...
