A character driven Eberron game anyone?

Chiming in with a viewpoint on the questions LordJimbo has raised:

Re: Party Size - I would concur and say that 4-5 people is the sweet spot.

Re: Splitting into groups - I'm open to any which way. I can play my character as a bitter amoral, or as one who yearns for justice.

Re: Game Length - again, I'm free and open. Resolution of revenge plot is one thing, but that could just lead on to more fun japes.

Re: Player Driven motivation - at the start, my character is purely going to be interested in growing self strength. I'm assuming that my family has too much power to take on at my current level, so will need to bide my time.

Alright, thank you for your input.

Still a work in progress but here is Lyre

Actually you know what just occurred to me? Some of you have expressed a desire to play high minded good guys and others have expressed a desire to play characters who...aren't. Maybe what I should do is have a group for heroes and a group for villains. One of the biggest sources of interparty conflict in my experience is alignment issues so maybe I should nip that in the bud by giving folks a choice of which direction to go as a group.

To explain further while Eberron is a dark setting where alignment is a great deal softer and the line of morality a great deal greyer it can still be highly distracting that when your trying to save that poor kitten your friend is next to you collecting more body parts for his Necklace O' Gorey Trophys and vica versa.

Hmmm the spoiler tags aren't showing anything are they empty or is my comp glitching out again?

Like I said a work in progress (Bit late in the game but would it be possible to change her to a witch instead?)

Hmm, I think I'm going to try and marry the two concepts. The Kalashtar would be fun and all, but the Elf would be far better for a much more RP focused, player driven game such as this. I think however I will still play him using the Psionics Unleashed rules.

As for the changes, the biggest ones were to make the classes far more akin to the Core classes, filling dead levels and in many cases offering things like Warrior Paths and Disciplines that work more like Wizard Schools.

The cocnept is a Dragonmarked Elf, possibly with levels in Dragonmarked Heir, who is trying to help rebuild The Twelve. There's more to it than that, but thas the basicis.

Sovereign Court

Using the ordered list that Poldrin has made, this is what I have to respond with!

1) Party size: I agree with 4-5. it's average enough that encounters don't feel too easy or too simple.

2) Group-splitting: I kind of agree here - if we have two 'sides' of the alignment here, perhaps it'd be in the best interest of all 'parties' to form up for good or evil acts. Just sayin'.

3) I like open-ended games. I would love to see this game run long, but I expect us to go for quite some time at the very least. I want my killing ma- I mean, guardian of the innocent (yeah, that's what I meant...) to come to power!

4) As far as I've put together, 'Vanguard' wants nothing more than to find a new forge - and begin his own collective of warforged, under his 'banner'. Not that he's thought that far ahead, but it's something he's considering, beyond perhaps upgrading himself over and over to further remove dependence on others...

Greetings. I arrive for your perusal.

1) 4 to 5 indeed.
2) Consider splitting double roles. Fighter, Mage, Cleric, Rogue in each.
3) Open ended games yes, but Eberron tends to break down about 12th level and will require more careful management.
4) Elemental flying ship.

I would have turned up sooner, but I was eaten by a gru and had to be entered again.

To answer those questions:

1) party size of 4-5 is best. Just makes things easier. More is doable, but if ur fine splitting us up and running to groups that would be much better.

2) as for how to split us, either alignment or player goals works, but I would also suggest tryin to make sure each group has a tank/dps and a healer. Skill monkeys and arcane casters aren't as key as some might think, especially since ur tailoring the game so much to us players

3) I would love to keep playing this for as long as possible. I do *not* think an Eberron game breaks down at 12th level or any level for that matter. Having just read the vast majority of the books for the setting, I can tell you that there is enough stuff to from 1-20 and then way on into epic. If LJ needs help, I can offer plenty of ideas to keep us entertained for a looong time

4) my character's main goal is to rebuild TheTwelve and make it the most powerful magical organization in Eberron. He also will seek to unify all the Houses more, including working on repairing the rift between the Shadow Houses.

Lol I know but sometimes my comp doesn't seem to load things properly so I thought I'd ask. And yes that is fine.

Alright, sounds good all around.

Well it seems everyone who has responded agrees on party size so I will do that one way or another. I think the 12th level reference is in response to the tone of high level play in many Eberron games which is basically "I've reached the double digit power levels, suck my balls entire country governments" Which I actually subscribe to, to an extent. However there is always a bigger fish and if a giant military can't stop the players at that level then they can't reasonably stop any threats that raise their head at that level either making the PCs even more important.

This is an excellent set of goals in my opinion. Set and clear but completely open ended in execution.

Sovereign Court

1) Party size: Looks like this is already decided, but I also agree that 4-5 is best. I've actually run a PbP game for three years (still ongoing) with 9 players in it, and it almost always ends up playing like two games running alongside each other with occasional intermingling. Works great for that group, but I wouldn't recommend it for running your first PbP game.

2) Group-splitting: I'm giving purely selfish input here. It would be great fun for Raeli to play alongside a shifter and an elf, especially a dragonmarked elf. She'd be quite nervous about the shifter finding something "off" about her, and nervous about the elf seeing her dragonmark. Not to mention either extremely jealous of (or suspicious of) the dragonmarked elf.

I'm still writing up my background, so I haven't had a chance to delve into any of the other submitted characters yet. Once I finish Raeli, I'll look for ties with everyone else.

3) I don't need to know how long or high the game will go. Just keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't die prematurely from the myriad possible deadly diseases PbP games acquire.

I have a list of clear-cut goals for Raeli written up. I'll get them up here ASAP. :)

Oh man. It could be really interesting to play alongside this character.

Would material from Ultimate magic be allowed? (was hoping to use some of the spells and have either a moon or healing patron)

Goals and Motivations:

--Seeking the oathbow that belonged to her family and was taken when they were killed
--Wants to see House Thuranni taken down and Phiarlin left as the only elf House
--She is working down the list of individual Thuranni assassins she remembers from the night of the slayings; adding to the list as she learns new names; she has killed two of the assassins so far (in her male half-orc body)
--Baron Elar d’Thuranni is her ultimate (and elusive) target; she wants to have a nice long chat with him about why he ordered the murder of her family line, then either destroy him by ruining his name and fortune or kill him (probably depending on how he answers her questions)
--She hopes that if she brings justice to the one who ordered the attacks, she will regain her elf body
--She does not know the Emerald Claw tipped off the leader of the Thuranni line; if/when she finds out, she will want to know much, much more
--Wants to travel to see the great druid Oalian to find out why she reincarnates

Family Ties:

--Her father is a Valenar elf, a druid explorer, but she hasn’t seen him (knowlingly, anyway) since she was a child; this is one of the reasons she is so particularly attached to her horse -- she feels a connection to her only possible living family through Karmel
--Her mother was very empathic and trained animals for the Phiarlian carnivals; Raeli did trick riding in the carnivals and was training under her mother

Challenges:

--Adjusting to new bodies/abilities
----First transition (to a halfling) was the most difficult; smaller, confused, started dreaming; discovered by a wildshaped druid, who she lived with for a decade
----Transition to a half-orc was shocking, especially since the body was male; started to accept the new bodies as a gift
-- More coming :)

Inspirations::

--Started with the idea of a girl and her horse (and her dog)
--Went to wanting a Valenar horse but a character who isn’t supposed to have a Valenar horse; what if she was an elf, but not anymore?
--Altered Carbon (book by Richard K. Morgan): the idea of bodies being just a “sleeve” for the soul, dealing with the issues of living in a new body; self/not-self
--Always wanted to play a surviving Paelion elf
--An assassin-type character who shows up in new bodies has a very nice Eberron ring to it
--And, of course, what revenge story isn't inspired by Inigo Montoya

Yes.

I really enjoy well fleshed out characters like Elora posted. The more connections you make between the character and the world the more material I have to mine for story arcs. A good ambition is goal+strong motivation, I feel you have provided that. Also I like the emotional connection to her steed and the disorientation described of taking new bodies, adds humanity to someone who at this point is likely increasingly walking the road of the hardened killer.

Lj, if you want a look at the type of character I can bring to an Eberron game, check this guy out. I can't promise my elf with be this tied to the world, as this one's history kinda took on a life of its own, lol.

Also, officially The Twelve is a magical organization, since I'm playing a Psionic character could we have it be just as accepting of that as well?? If not I'll probably switch to a Shadow Sorcerer.

Ps,
This is Monkeygod's alias lol

Just a few details (+background) to do. Just checking if hp are rolled or average?

Oh man. It could be really interesting to play alongside this character.

I could easily fit in with the Twelve. Mayhaps a mostly mage group may work. Would Korth be a good place to start? Should I be Dragonmarked as well? (House Cannith? Of Korth I am.)

Vaelins now has a description. More information about his motivations and goals will be written soon once I reread the relevant parts of the Eberron setting.

This is Liriel Opaline. I'm still updating her from first level but she's mostly done.

Very nice, I hope you bring that level of creativity to my game. Yes if you like we can bend The Twelve's history a bit so that they always included Psions. Works fine flavorwise IMHO.

After first level take high average (1/2 HD+1)

No opinion from me currently, let's hear what your fellow players have to say.

Ok stats all done will have background up sometime tommorow hopefully.

Because you have theoretically been crafting since level 1 but craft reserve points don't carry over per level you may increase your starting wealth by 3,000 GP.

Don't have much in the way of stats on this computer, but here is the alias.

This character isn't so much evil, as just off putting. Very Rastlinesque I suppose you could call it.

For a better idea of the concept. Here's a profile for the little girl.

@ LordJimbo - after reflection on the matter and the fact you have enough interest from other parties - I'll pull Poldrin from consideration.

Have fun whoever gets to stomp around in Eberron :)

Ok, wavering between a Telepath Psion or a Rakshasa Sorcerer. The issue is, the Psion doesn't currently have much in the way of published Powers, while the Sorcerer has 3 books for me to choose from.

Both classes fit the concept pretty nicely, so it's just figuring out which one I want to go with more.

Ok, so wanted to figure out where we were at with people so went through and wrote it down and figured I might as well post it in case anyone else was wondering.
Me-neutral little girl, role-entertainment, alias- Dinoman/Killakev
Auzshial-male witch, alias-Fraust

Vaelins-chaotic neutral male rogue/alchemist, alias-St Caleth

Elvombor-neutral good male fighter/wizard, role-archer, alias-another_mage

KMBCross's warforged melee fighter

and unfortunately it looks like we lost Mark Sweetman's summoner/iron man Poldrin which I thought sounded pretty cool, but oh well.

Sorry if I made any mistakes.

I would love to play around in Korth. Haven't played in that part of Eberron much, and it would be a nice change of pace from Sharn, actually. Though I'm fine kicking things off anywhere.

Husband and kiddos are off to visit the in-laws tomorrow, so I'll have some time to really work on writing up Raeli's story to this point, and polish off her mechanics. It would be nice to know who the final members in her party are, so I can try to weave in some ties to them. I'm having trouble seeing how she would fit in directly with the Twelve, but I may just need a fresh creative moment :). Maybe they need a good tracker? She does earn money as a free agent tracker/guide, seeing how taking down Thuranni doesn't really pay well (and requires a lot of resources).

And I'm rambling...goodnight!

Ok, as of right now, I'm going Rakshasa/Shadow Crossblooded Sorcerer. Crossblooded is an Archype from Ultimate Magic that combines some aspects of each Bloodline, though bonus spells and Bloodline Powers are one or the other. I get both skills as bonus, both Arcana and I can choose my bonus feats from either Bloodline.

This one's profile is almost done, and his backstory is in progress. He dates back to the first forging, a paragon amongst his kind, and has been upgraded in secret until he actually killed his creator for 'using' him. That's the short and fast of it, but more to explain to come.

By the by, I don't post a profile until it's 100% complete - I had to make the race custom with my creator, so it took a bit of time. Be up soon!

The Twelve is an organization of academics in the end so despite their wizardly power I imagine they need agents to facilitate accomplishing many different tasks. If that's where you end up I don't think we will have to stretch the premise very far to make you fit.

And as far as choosing parties that's something I'd like to leave to the players but I may have to step in and choose if we find we can't organize ourselves.

Are "The Twelve" described well in any particular Eberron setting book? I've got a pretty good selection (least of the 3.5 stuff, none of the newer 4th ed stuff).

Also, for concept of the character, I would like to go the route of an inquisitive oddly enough. Sorta like Johna Hex actually...something of a dislikable fellow who solves crimes by talking to the dead and using some pretty dark magic.

Okay character is finished kept the background fairly sparse for ease of fitting her into either group.

The only Eberron book I have current access to is the campaign setting (which has many references but only like a page actually dedicated to the organization itself.)However off the top of my head I know there is a bit in the Explorer's Handbook about The Twelve's Acquisitions Directorate and...hmmm drawing a blank about further references. How I intend to represent The Twelve in my game is to play up the dichotomy that exists in many Eberron organizations between the (kind of) altruistic and the unpleasantly selfish. Members of Twelve genuinely want to use magic to increase the quality of life across Khorvaire but having the influence of all thirteen Dragonmarked houses in such close proximity creates an unhealthy level of political backbiting.

Character concept sounds fun, several other character's have mysteries haunting their pasts you would be well equipped to help solve as details come to light.
