I was there in '87-'88, and visited again in 2003. I lived in Wittlich for a few months, in Traben-Trarbach right on the Mosel for a while, and then in the metropolis of Niederscheidweiler in den Vulcan Eifel for a few months. Cool Ort of about 200 people as I recall.

Tirion:

Yeah, that sounds like a typical Eifel village :) And did you like it in germany?

Sorely tempted to add another to the pile with you saying you'll run two more groups - but resistance is holding out for the moment....

Tirion:
If you're still up for the Monk campaign, feel free to chime in on the discussion thread over there :)

DM VoV:

How would you want me to be introduced? I started to read the thread and realized that I did not know how you wanted my to get started. I stopped about 25 posts in so that you could use the same test with the Mwangi guard. If you want some other intro, that is fine as well. All I know is that if you annoy the guard he keeps kicking you back and laughing at your incompetence - can't wait to finish reading that intro, but as I said, I figured I would keep that intro open by not reading any more yet.

Tirion:

Just yesterday I read an article about the importance of the lexicon when it comes to speaking comprehension. While your grammar has some flaws, I understood you perfectly :)
And since I don't think my English is much better, I guess we're pretty much on equal terms!

I guess it's pretty hard to find someone for speaking German in the US, maybe we should start a German speaking PBP, I guess Thordak and DMHW also had some German experience in the past, heh.

DMHW might have had a little Deutsch, but I do not think he really speaks it. At least I have never spoken it with him. I have no clue about Thordak - he is DMHW's friend. Also there was another person who responded to Bree a while ago who is also a native german. I would be interested, but it would require a lot of interpretation - would be fun though, even though I would have to find all the special keys for ÄÖÜäöü and β.

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

Tirion:

Yeah, Feytharn is also German and Rydlon, too. So we already have three natives at the campfire :) And I see you already found all the nifty keys, heh

Male Elf Witch/10 (HP: 27/27; AC15; FF13; T15; F+2, R+5, W+10; Perc: +31, Init +2)

ZZ I'll pitch my goblin's backstory once I'm off work (6pm EST)

To the prospective Hobgoblin-

Hob:
Any interest in a common background? Odds are a goblin gunslinger was adopted and taught how to use a gun either for survival or a very cruel trick by a anarchist :) But I'm willing to flex things around.

Male Orc Expert 5

Guess I'll toss out a backstory to go with the insane stats.

Ragnvald Hrolfson:
He was born for greatness. Marked by Gorum, born under an auspicious star and destined to lead the clan Ragnvald was among the mightiest warriors, wisest priests and charismatic men of his age group.

By the time he was 16 he already won the leadership of the clan in a trial by combat and was rapidly heading torward the top of Gorum's church in the region. Enthralled by his charm and amazed by his natural prowess his people followed him in raid after raid against orcish enemies and rival clans in the search for wealth and power. Growing bolder with each raid his lsit of enemies grew long while his actual power and skill grew slowly. It as only a matter of time before he was brought low by a bigger and smarter foe.

It was in a battle with a rival clan that the clans champion challaneged him to a test of combat skill and strength should he win then Ragnvald would leave his clan in shame and his troops would become bondsman to their clan. Should he fail then that chieftain would do the same. In his pride he gladly took up the challenge and then promptly lost in a humiliating defeat.

Shamed, scarred and broken Ragnvald limped away and exiled himself from the lands of his people.

He has only just now arrived in Absalom looking to regain his honor and reclaim his rightful place at the head of his clan and as a favored child of Gorum. But first he must inform his uncle, who left the clan for adventure, who is currently in Absalom serving as a bodyguard to a wealthy merchant of his failure, his shame, and take any punishment the man feels the need to dole out.

This is jsut a brief backstory will need to get into personality and appearances when i get back from work.

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

I already like the broken hero flavour, very nice.

Zyen, how do you feel about Hobgoblins as an option? I was thinking about writing up a Magus that will go Dragon Disciple at 6th level--basically a Hobgoblin runaway who infiltrated and adapted to civilized society (joining the Pathfinders) in order to research and hopefully understand his draconic ancestry?

EDIT: Reading back, I see that Sable is hoping to play a goblin. Maybe it would make sense for his character and mine to already know each other, being of similar race in similar situations?

That'd be quite all right with me.

Female Half-Elf Sorcerer 4 Bard 0

Introducing Nymeria, the Draconic sorceress for your consideration! I am also thinking of going towards arcane archer, but I'm not sure... The profile is nearly complete, with background and everything nice! I will add a little to end the background later, too.

I think I will give this one a pass ZZ. Catch you next time around.
I rather suspect I'll be lurking though. Looks fun.

Thank you Tirion, for your well-wishing and any others I may have overlooked.

I'm back guys. Thanks Sable, for taking over for Bree.

Female Human Rogue-Knife Master/10 (Init: +4)

Sneak Attack:
PRD wrote:

Sneak Attack: If a rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.

The rogue's attack deals extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the rogue flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every two rogue levels thereafter. Should the rogue score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.

With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (like a sap, whip, or an unarmed strike), a rogue can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty.

The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.

Sneak Stab:
PRD wrote:
Sneak Stab (Ex): A knife master focuses her ability to deal sneak attack damage with daggers and similar weapons to such a degree that she can deal more sneak attack damage with those weapons at the expense of sneak attacks with other weapons. When she makes a sneak attack with a dagger, kerambit, kukri, punching daggers, starknife, or swordbreaker dagger (Advanced Player's Guide 178), she uses d8s to roll sneak attack damage instead of d6s. For sneak attacks with all other weapons, she uses d4s instead of d6s. This ability is identical in all other ways to sneak attack, and supplements that ability.

So, if Bree who is a level 3 knife master is about to perform a sneak stab on a flanked enemy, her damage will be 3d8's, right? Is her attack roll altered, if so, how?

Male Pale Master

@ Bree - your attack roll is unaltered for Sneak Stab. As a 3rd level rogue you would normally do 2d6 sneak attack damage. As a Knife Master you now do 2d8 as long as your using light weapons.

Alright so here is what we have so far;

Game choice:
Hangman's Noose
Player Votes
T-ron (Draconic Sorcereress)
Sable (Goblin Gunslinger?)
Grmnbln(Alchemist)
Feytharn (Rogue)
Tirion (Oracle)
TarkXT (Ulfen Evangelist)
garabbot (Hobgob Magus or Paladin)
Bilbo (Vidor Varkony,Varisian Wizard)
Shifty (Possible Bow Out)

We could likely stand to have another frontliner through a bid in.

Summary
Hangman's Noose has been chosen. Due to the number of interested applicants, potential players will cast votes for the characters they feel are the best for the job. Players will need to have a familial connection to Absalom. Characters with an atypical race will need to figure out how they can link to a family and at least one character may have a tie to a royal family.

Until they get hit back, and that's when things go not so hawt... :)

Anyhow, trying to mull over a bit more about where the module or campaign might head before coming up with a concept. Suppose it seems we might need a straight tank - could be an interesting first for me!

Actually between Oracle(Outer Rifts), Sorcerer(Draconic) and Dragon Disciple together with the Eldrich Heritage(Abyssal Bloodline), I should have 30 Str and 24 AC (+6 Armor(Oracle), +5 Natural Armor(+2 Draconic, +3 DD) and +3 Dex armor) when she is completely nekkid at 19th level. --> And with a 24 Charisma, everybody will be watching her, not attacking anyway.

The trick will be not getting "Overfiended" before you reach 19, haha. At the rate of advance on PbP that should be about 7 years from now. :)

@Shifty You were saying wanted to branch away from logistics not too long ago, this could be that shot.

Yeah could be right. Might need to look through a few ideas and see if something grabs me...

The problem I am seeing coming up again and again though is that the AP's are ending up with us pretty far below WBL, and Tanks are gold intensive... so my druid has always been more effective than my paladin at similar points. Ditto my Witch was always stronger as she didn't need much stuff to do her thing.

My Paladin still cant afford a reasonable upgrade at L3, and is still wearing his starting banded mail from L1 (and is now getting pounded heavily) - I think printed modules are cash averse :p

VC - Sydney, Australia

Hmmm if only I hadn't already used the Pseudodragon concept :p

Still having a struggle.

Seems we have a party that is composed of circus freaks, and the other semi normal. Trying to find a normal concept or a circus freak concept is hard for some reason...

Is there a short list of acceptable races? ;p

How about this for a pitch,

Humphrey - Grizzly Bear
Druid (Bear Totem)

Pretty rough when the gypsy is the most grounded, lol.

VC - Sydney, Australia

Yeah thats what I was thinking... I was sort of like 'ummm ok, who's the party face?'

Ok the Bear won't work.

Can I play an Ogre? As its a 20pt race I can take an NPC class for 1st level?

Please?

For once I could just take a character with shady int/wis/cha. It's the only way I can stop myself.

(Ok saving this one for a rainy day...)

Attalas
Ogre, L1 Warrior

Sir Ulfric re-steadied his sword and steeled his gaze further, readying to drive the blade home.

”Hurry up will ya, there’s ale getting warm and women getting cold” yelled one of the voices from his adventuring party. Ulfric was stuck fast though, to kill or not to kill? He faced the conundrum of so many of his forebears; now he had killed the marauding Ogre mob, was it right to also kill the child? Was it nature or nurture? Would he fall through his lack of compassion? Would Iomedae smile or strike the child?

”Damn!” He grabbed the almost man sized child by the ear, and it in turn held its stuffed bear tight and whined under the rough treatment. ”It comes with us” . His fellows looked at him incredulously, but his black look cowed them all into a low mumble of discontent.

***

The baulking of his fellows was nowhere near as breathless and outraged as the reaction of his wife who wondered what the reaction would be in court to her new foster child. Why she knew she would be the laughing stock of the society women, and demanded that the child be kept under the guise of a menial labourer or servant, and not on their main family property. Ulfric realised that this would have to be the way of it; he was never home long before going off on another adventure, and those times he was home he felt he’d like it to be peaceful.

The Ogre lad was thus handed off to one of the tenant farmers to raise, but quickly the farmer grew impatient with the boy-giant’s daydreaming and lack of focus, so he made excuses and handed the boy to the Blacksmith who was originally delighted with the boys strength and ability to pound out steel and lift objects, but the boy ate like a horse and became too expensive to keep as he started filling out his adult frame (and his incessant day dreaming)... and so the Blacksmith passed him on to the town militia.

The militia grumbled and groaned, but their patron was Sir Ulfric, so under some coercion they took on the lad as the local 'brawl breaker', and did what they could to teach him the use of arms and armour. They quickly found the boon of his size was also a hindrance, as was his apparent unawareness of his strength. Everything around him had to be reinforced, everything resized to fit this rather sweet and friendly day-dreaming giant.

So it was that time wore on, and one day Sir Ulfric never returned from his quest. His single handed charge into the lair of a Great Wyrm saved his allies, but his fate was certainly sealed.

It didn’t take long for the widow to cut off the funding for this ‘bumbling buffoon’, which put the militia in a bit of a bind. As fate would cruelly turn not long after, a brawl at a dockside inn spiralled out of control and the militia responded with their ‘one man gang’ leading the effort... and thats when it happened; a drunken sailor hit him with a rum bottle and left a great wound, a wound that was quickly repaid in a fit of rage and anger with a savage punch that simply killed the man outright.

The militia did what any self respecting lawmen would do when their faithful friendly hunting hound had gone too far; they packed him up with all his gear and said they were taking him on a ”Secret mission” several days ride from town, until he was incredibly lost. They told him to wait by the side of the road for ”a man on an elephant”.

So he waited, and waited, and waited; for so long he waited. Until it dawned on even his good natured soul that he had been abandoned.

And so there he waited by the side of a lonely by-road with nowhere to go, and nowhere to be; crying, alone, dirty, hungry, and in the tattered uniform he was wearing when he was dumped off to fend for himself. That is how he was found as the adventurers arrived.

Would this large man child like to be the "Big Brother" to a Varisian lad? A little "Of Mice and Men" action.

In fact, I think that if both I and any of you...unusual types get picked up for this foray into Absalom, I am working a connection to one of the magic schools of societies into my story that could provide a benefactor of sorts. Maybe while in town his reputation allows for your presence to be tolerated or he cast spells to disguise your true nature. Could be that Vidor's grandmother is a powerful witch herself and is able alter your appearence to that of beastial looking men and gnomes while in the presence of other men. Varisians are subject to racial profiling already so it would be no surprise to some that they had been "cross breeding" with other scum. Just some thoughts.

Being that we are all pretty familiar with each other from other games having a shared reason to be in Absalom will cut down on the getting to know you phase also.

Headed to bed all. This week my interaction will slow just a bit due to training constraints. Got pulled out my cush office to go tromp around out in the mud, rain, MOPP (bio hazard) suits for next two weeks, blah. No playing from work, lol. Oh well, guess you have do your real job from time to time. Recon and surveying it will be. I'll still be on every day but, not several times a day. See ya's tomorrow. Auf Wiedersehen, mein freunds!

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

Why choose a noble race like centaur when you can be an ogre, eh?

Attalas has no connection to a juryman, is that intended?

VC - Sydney, Australia

I was (at this point) trying to work out how the great lunk came to be, as opposed to how he fit within the specific confines of a particular module. I got a bit carried away working on the who/how, and wasn't sure a 20 point race would be allowed (despite this particular races shortcomings) so didn't get too worked on 'fitting' at this point :)

20pt normally means a slight level adjustment, which would be tricky in an L1 party...!

He'd also allow me to be undeniably NOT the party face.

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

We have to ask what the others think about your slightly better race. I don't have a problem with, especially since you took Warrir for first level.

Male Gnome Sorcerer/9 - (HP: 49/49 - AC20;FF17;T18 - F+5;R+6;W+7 - Init+9 - Per+11)

Male dwarven kineticist 3

Linky linky

I was just going to be a Human Alchemist but with such a freakshow party forming I may as well join in. First thought after reading about Shadow Absalom is to create a Fetchling Ninja but depending on what kind of rogue Feytharn creates that might be stepping on some toes a bit.
If so I'll most likely create a Tiefling alchemist and eventually go into Master Chymist for the full-on daemonic ancestory strengthened by the years of chemicals and magic taking over every now and then. That seems like fun.

Male Orc Expert 5

I've decided to hold off on any major character building decisions regarding the evangelist until I know what the group will be like. How come I've got this odd feeling he'll be trucking around with a group of savage humanoids in a big city?

Divine Gamemaster of the Abyss and below...

If you think you can be successful with your party layout just go ahead^^
Maybe your evangelist will become an elven paladin, just to make the party a bit nicer^^

Fetchlings aren't savage as such, just very creepy looking. Same could be said for tieflings.

Oh that will go over well.

I can't imagine Ragnvald being very nice at all. However he is a leader of men. So part of the debate is channeling negative energy or some form of alternate positive energy.

I can't help it I'm a sucker for working as part of a team. Leadership will definitely be a 7th level feat.
