I've dealt with "God hates you" cold once before while visiting grandparents in western michigan for xmas. We got the bright idea into our heads to go see what Lake Michigan looked like in the dead of winter. So that cold wasn't so much "God hates you" as "God thinks your stupid". 50 mph winds and a temperature that STARTED at -2 fahrenheit. With windchill it dropped down to about -30 and the lake was frozen over 100 feet out from shore and the sand was rock hard. I've never worn so many layers of winter clothing before and still been that cold. STUPID.

I went to elementary school at -42 fahrenheit once and in high school went skiing at -35 with 65 mph winds. I think the windchill is in the -80 to -90 range at that point. Looking back at it today, yeh, it was probably a little foolish, but hey, I did it.
Pretty sure DMHW can verify the -42, as he actually lived in town whereas I lived outside of town where it rarely got as cold.

This is true, but as a kid, I just sort of understood that was the way life was. Nowadays, the temperature doesn't usually get that cold, but sometimes we may get a week of -20º F. I always hate that sound when my car really doesn't want to start in the morning, and I am hoping and praying that it will reconsider. Winter is always great when it snows. When it does, we can ski, snowshoe, and simply enjoy our life outside. However, the worst is when we get nothing but freezing rain and ice, then we are stuck inside and we get a little bit of cabin fever. We also have to learn to be flexible and know that sometimes we just have to cancel events due to the weather.

AD&D was a huge part of growing up. The Keep on the Borderland was our original staple, but we went through everything from White Plume Mountain, The Temple of Elemental Evil to Against the Giants. I remember one particular morning waking up at 4 o'clock at Tirion's house and playing for hours! I think we use to get in trouble at school often for always reading D&D books. If I remember right, Mrs. Ferguson once banned Tirion from bringing those books to school! We also use to bike seven miles uphill each way with a bicycle loaded up with books, clipboards, character sheets and pounds of lead miniatures. Those were the good ole days for sure!

Sounds like some pretty fond memories :) When I was a kid I liked to play in the snow a little bit, but not as much as other kids. I had to walk to school and when it snowed it really sucked, not only did I get to school frozen and covered in snow, but then the rest of the day my socks, shoes and pant legs were cold and wet.

It was actually nine miles, and it was only uphill 1/2 way each way, there was sort of a mountain between where I lived and town where DMHW lived.
Here in Chicago, if it is below like 5 degrees they start to cancel school. In New Hampshire, usually at about 20 below they would make us stay inside for recess. I never remember a day of school being canceled.
As far as the D&D goes, I remember days and days of playing. I remember the Keep on the Borderlands. That was the first time we ever played. We had not learned minor things like splitting experience points and that you had to memorize spells. Also Good and Evil were sort of relative concepts. As I recall, DMHW was the DM and I pretty much eviscerated the entire Keep - Lightning Bold every round. We did not actually get to the Caverns until a future session.

Sad face.
got a sore leg in training on Saturday afternoon - was a bit of an audible pop and a feeling like I got hit in the calf with a rock followed by a lot of soreness - thought it might have just been a cramp but it turns out its a torn calf muscle and I have to go get an ultrasound for it Thursday to see how much damage. I'm glad its not a 'full' tear, but it means the fight I was preparing for on Dec 2 will now be almost certainly off :(
Weaksauce.
How am I supposed to 'Summer beach lean' now?

Yeah, man, that blows. I had similar injury with hamstring last year. Had to get a little physical therapy and it still isn't right. But, I think my issue was near the head of my femur. Deep muscle is a b!#!+. December might be pushing it, though I wouldn't rule yourself out yet.

If anyone here is interested in running a campaign, I am in a Serpent's Skull campaign with pretty good players. We were about 3 weeks in and then the DM just switched the campaign to inactive and said he did not want to deal with the issues. Issues that we have all seen a dozen times on PbP. If anyone is interested, or know someone who wants to DM a Serpent's Skull campaign, please let me know.
Here is the OOC thread for the now inactive campaign.
We have a mwangi elf wizard (me), a vanara ranger, a human cleric, and a human bard(archeologist). If someone wants to take over, we can play with 4 players, this group is decently balanced I think, or pick up 1-2 more.
As I said, we had only played for about a month, so very little has happened and we could easily restart if necessary.

I just can't see myself as a good pbp gm; It irks me enough as a player when people are tardy with my posts, it would drive me to distraction as a GM :p

I'm glad you mention that, Shifty. I find that is the hardest thing for me as a DM on PBP. I feel like I am constantly checking the messageboards trying to move things along and make sure that I keep nobody waiting. I know that life happens, to me especially, but playing pathfinder this way, requires a great deal of patience. However, I also know that it is far better than not playing at all. I also love keeping in touch with friends old and new all over the world!

The four players left seem to be into the game.
And Bilbo - there were no rampant tentacle beasts. There were several lobster scorpion monsters of some sort though.
Shifty |
I too felt cheated at missing a tentacle beast, but I found the tieflings misunderstanding of the rules to be quite a hoot. I have to say the other 'strong silent type' was a bit of a whiner as well 'quiet because of language issues' - mofo I play a f**king CAT that is more expressive and dialogue driven. A deaf mute can still communicate or be involved. Geez, entitled much? :p
Tirion Jörðhár |
Considering that it is the Serpent's Skull, I am sure that at some point there will be a tentacled beast. I was baffled at the tiefling insisting that he go off by himself. And then just blowing up and ditching. It was all sort of surreal. Nonetheless, I like my character and would like to play the AP now that I have gotten it started.

Anyone here ever play the Everquest RPG? Meaning the Whitewolf version, not the Verant/SOE online thing BTW.
Considering getting involved in a game since it's arguably one of the greatest RPGs ever.
(posting from 'neath the covers)
p.s. Z that thing we talked about (obvious wink), is today. I'll be back to posting as soon as I can.

Evening everyone.
Apparently my neutered adult male cat feels threatened by the 5 week old kittens. *sigh*
Well, once you neuter him, he probably does not view himself as either adult or male or a him anymore.
Twilightrose |
I didn't neuter him, I adopted him at 5 months old from the humane society. They neutered him, as they do all of their animals, before I even met him. He's not normally like this, he's actually an alpha male. He chases off other cats and picks fights if they even look like they might come near our yard. He loved Chloe (momma cat) until she got knocked up, then he started being kind of mean to her. I think it's just that he knows they're not his, but it's still annoying to see him hissing at the babies.

I'm back from Italy. They had internet, just like Austrailia, but I did not have time. I'm back in the states, but not yet home (stuck with bad hotel and airport Internet till then). Had a good trip, but it will good to get back home. I will try to get read-up and back in the threads over the next day or two. Should be home and up to speed by Thursday night. Sorry for the posting gap.

Evening everyone.
Apparently my neutered adult male cat feels threatened by the 5 week old kittens. *sigh*
:-( Have you tried to give him some extra attention (of course only when he was not just busy hissing at the kitties) just to assure him of his place in your family? (extra attention works with males of any species, really;-) )
Twilightrose |
@feytharn - I have given him some extra attention but maybe now that they're out running around the whole house instead of tucked up at the foot of my bed I should step up my game, lol.
@Shifty - I had a grade 2 ankle sprain when I was 17. I was playing with my dog outside, running around in the yard. Hit a hole she had dug that had grass growing back over it, twisted my ankle and went down. 2 seconds later I got run over with the full force of a full grown Great Dane who didn't realize I wasn't still playing. I had to crawl my way back into the house with her jumping around on me trying to get me to play. No one else was home so I was on my own until my parents got back a couple of hours later. My foot was super swollen even with the ice pack I managed to get. It was turning blue and I thought it must be broken, but no, the said I had just almost completely tore the ligament. It actually healed pretty quickly for me, and I hope yours does too. Of course, I wasn't in the army :/
@Mark - I hate it when I get the flu, the woman-flu version of it though ;) Feel better soon.
Karlan Bladetwist |
So let's see oone beat stick is running in terror for a bunch of rounds, our sorceress is running in terror for a bunch of rounds. Our bard is trying to get them back and the paladin just ate a face full of "u r screwed breath".
This fight's startin off well.
TarkXT |
Welp unless certain rolls start going our way very rapidly it looks like at least Karlan is dead. We haven't even engaged this thing in melee yet and it already basically took out two of us and greatly reduced the capability of a 3rd.
Here's hoping our two remaining ladies have some miracles up there sleeve. At least we're high enough level that Karlan doesn't have to suffer the curse for a full month.
