I'm glad that everyone is coming together to give this woman something loving after so much hate, but at the same time, I'm mildly annoyed. I've been slinging my fundraisers (which support MS and Autism among others) for a couple of months now and have only managed to raise $30, $20 of that coming from myself :/ *Sigh*.

Bree, you might have problem raising money for autism when so many gullible folks are taken in by flashy folks like Jenny McCarthy who foolishly think autism is caused by vaccinations, despite proof that the initial studies linking autism to vaccinations have been shown to be false.

And to chime in on the discussion, my wife teaches in an affluent New Hampshire town (Bedford), and we have come to the conclusion that probalby 95% of problems with the kids stem *directly* from poor parenting. Yes, when the parents are all "MY kid doesn't lie!!" and are of the mistaken opinion that the teachers are supposed to be the parents, that's where the problems occur.

Folks seem to have children for the wrong reasons. You don't just have kids because someone else thinks you should (whether that be your family, your religion, or whatever). You have kids because you are confident you can improve the lot of the world, even a little bit, with your proginy. You have kids because you're confident you can be a good parent, that you'll do right by your kids. You ahve kids with the full knowledge that your life changes dramatically, sometimes (often!!) making it much more difficult. You have to be the grown up, even when it's hard and your kids may say "I HATE you!!!"

I don't hate kids. I hate stupid, unwise people who have kids.

Edit: Oh, and ALL KIDS LIE. Every. Single. One. Including my two. It's part of their development, both as very young, and as they get into adolecence. ALL KIDS LIE. Period. EVEN YOURS (no matter who you are). If kids DON'T lie, then there's actually a problem!

The belief that autism can be caused by vaccines is a VERY popular one and it stems from the belief that the mercury found in some vaccines can cause autism. A doctor just told me about a court case a while back where a judge awarded a woman a large sum of money based on the belief that vaccinations gave her child autism. The judge said something along the lines of he didn't want to set a precedent for this belief, but awarded it to her anyway. I don't know the details, anyway, you're right more recent studies have shown that autism can be diagnosed as early as 4 months old and at the age of 4 months, children haven't received any vaccinations containing mercury.

The problem is, we don't know exactly what causes autism. Every doctor I've spoken to has agreed to such, saying it could be anything from something environmental, vaccines to genetics. This is what makes me scared to have a second child, not knowing what caused my first child to be autistic.

My charity is set up to benefit the Autism Society of America, which is a well known and established not for profit organization. I would hope, either way, that weather people erroneously believe that vaccines cause autism, they would still wish to help to find a definitive cause, help those who have it and learn about prevention.

I hope you didn't take offense to my comments. I mena, you know WAY more about the condition than I do. I certainly didn't mean anything by it.

You have my sympathies for your little one. I'm saddened by the reality that you're facing, that you're reluctant for more kids because of the possibilities (saddend, but totally understand--I find *that* to be a very responsible thought process!).

I hope your charity picks up some steam!!

I recognize at least half of the molds in the pictures Google comes up with and I stopped buying random D&D Minis two sets after the 'Giants of Legend'.

Tirion, I will help you add a few posts. So tell me, is that 20 posts per day counting all of your characters? Are you really almost at your one year mark? What is the date?

Oh yes, I also wanted to ask you if you got the new Rush Album, Clockwork Angels? It has a really cool steam punk flavor to it. You should see the youtube video of one of their new pieces called Headlong Flight.

I thought that Poor Wandering One's problem with the servant boys was that they tended to die in rather unusual circumstances.

Gahhhhh...
Sorry, I've got to vent for just a moment, mainly because this happened to me the second time now with almost the same setup (almost, last time, one more victim and I had to report at the police station the next day, this time I could report at the gas station, probably because we have a baking shop now...)

Incident at the Gas station I work, reported to the police that I called like this:

- I heard someone screaming, then I saw five guys in front of the gas station beating up a sixt person who was already on the ground.

- I ran outside, yelling at them, hoping to catch them by surprise so they might flee or at least halt instead of turning on me, so I could get the victim inside and lock the door (hey, I might be quite tall and I can look pretty frightening if I want too, but five to one is still bad news...)

- I succeeded, the bullys ran, I got the injured but concious victim inside and called for the cops and an ambulance.

Question 1: Did you see where they ran?
Answer: Yup, general direction of the town.

Question 2: Why didn't you try to catch one of the bullys instead of letting them all go?
Answer:....??????

Seriously, first time, a couple of years ago I thought perhaps he hadn't heard me when I was describing the situation, but a second time (I am not even sure it was the same cop...)what do they think I am?

Venting over. Thank you for your time...

VC - Sydney, Australia

I had a similarly stupid exchange with Police many years ago went something like that. The problem is that when you slap a bad guy the cops then ask why you hit him and then want to give you grief - not worth it.

I reckon just breaking up the fight is my Community Service limit, no need to get more involved than that.

I couldn't not do it. It seemed there really was somebodys life (or at least health) at stake, I couldn't just wait and see.

ZZ: There is some wooden stick, but that probably would have looked too ridiculous (my advantage is my height - I am 2.1m tall, but wielding a ten inch pole I woulod probably look less intimidating.)
The victim thanked me just briefly, but he was injured, confused and in shock, so I surely didn't expect much more ;-).

Bree: That is what I would have expected of the cops here, too - and what is what happened when I was robbed (isn't thze nightshift fun?) a couple of years ago, as well as when I gave that bleeding guy running from a couple of drunk rusians, shelter in the gas station. Why this one (or these two, I really ain't certain) think(s) personal vigilance should go one step further I can't say...

Female Human Rogue-Knife Master/10 (Init: +4)

How odd... I hope you and the victim were at least able to describe the guys well enough that they are found and arrested.

I got a pretty good look on three of them, the victim wasn't present when I made my report, so I don't know if he maybe even knew the guys.

I reread my last post - I seem to lose my grasp of the english sanguage (or at least spelling) due to lack of sleep - please try to ignore the blatant mistakes I make, thank you.

Great job Fey. In the future, one other option if you have it is your cell phone camera. Snap a pic or two before you do anything and immediately send them to your email, or to a friend. Then there is nothing they can do.

Personally, I have never been in such a situation, so my response may not be possible or logical in the situation.

Them being five, I tried to avoid giving them time to think. All that happened right in front of the shops door. Making the photo from the inside would have been impossible (bright inside, reflective glass, dark on the outside) and making it once outside could have been bad for my (and the victims) health, but yeah, I thought of that (especially since the gas stations surveilance videos are to crappy to be even considered evidence - as I learned the first time this happened)

Considering all the crazy stuff I have witnessed in the few years working at that gas station, I really considered writing a book about those nightshift happenings...

You know, Fey, a small stick coudl be a very effective weapon. True, not for the intimidation factor, but if you hold it against your forearm with the intent of poking with it (have the butt end of the stick just protruding from the end of your thumb), you could ruin someone's day real fast.

You were very brave to have done what you did in that situation. Hopefully it will never happen again--but if it ever does, might I humbly suggest you grab EVERY advantage you can, in case a fight does occur? You could take out 2 guys QUICK with hard jabs to the short ribs/eye/throat, which may then give the remaining guys pause, buying you time . . .

but good on ya for helping someone who needs it, in the face of very real danger! And the proper answer to teh cop, I think, is "You're kidding, right? PLease tell me you're kidding."

Just some of the more humorous highlights (I witnessed some tragedy there, too, but I won't put that here)

- Truck driver searches for a supermarket called 'Marktkauf'. I tell him he just needs to follow the road a bit. He gets a bit angry mumbling he came from there and didn't find it. I assured him it was there-
He comes back, a little more angry, telling me it wasn't there. I tell him approximatly how far it is and on which side of the road to look.
He comes back real angry, telling me it wasn't there. I calm him down a bit by offering him a coffee, then ask him if he did see the 'M' logo of that international fast dood restaurant. He told me he did. I ask him if he did see the second 'M' logo a few yards down the road. He said he did. I calmly point at his truck that sports the very same logo, belongnig to Marktkauf...

- Guy (nope, not drunk) calling the cops because (rough night, we are told to put every larger note right into the safe) I couldn't change his € 100 Bill for a can of pasta. The cops were not amused...

- Guy (quite drunk) insisting that I sell him a train ticket to the next town. I told him that he was in the wrong place and that he needed to walk about one more mile to the train station. He nodded, told me he understood, walked out, turned back and asked me to sell him a ticket...repeat two times, at last I had him show me how much money he got and called him a cab...

- A guy with half his ear cut off, several teeth missing and a bleeding injury to the eyebrow asked me if he could use the phone. I asked him if I should call an ambulance, but he wanted to call his friends and get back at the guys who beat him up.

- lady parking her car right in front of a gas pump, running in and asking me for a fire extinguisher because her engine was on fire

- a truck driver finishing an electric sign of the gas station off with his truck, coming in quite shaken, apologizing, asking if he could wait here for his boss he just called. I agree, he realizes he needs to get his phone from the truck aand breaks his keys trying to open the door...he was almost crying when I offered him a coffee and use of my phone

- an employer of a nearby (large)brothel buying all the boxes of condoms we had left (at a price you only pay at a gas station or an apothecary..., well beyond €200 alltogether) because somebody decided to throw a party at that place and they ran out of condoms after only a few hours...

- a guy calling the police to proof he was 18 and eligible to buy liquor...the police came, could confirm his age and identity...and arrested the guy because there was an open warrant against him...

Not that I know, but I guess being the only gas station consistantly open all night in a rather large area takes its toll...

On the other hand, the last five years in the county (Kreis Warendorf) have seen an execution style murder, two murders with the victims being cut into pieces and a violent rivalry between the manager of a butchery and a local farmer(and by violent I mean that somebody is tried for hiring an assassin), a town hiring large style private security to get rid of a teen gang and regular horse mutilations, yeah, perhaps you are right ;-)

I can bot Bilbo in the interim if needs be!
