/sigh....

I was afraid they were just going to be iconics...

I'll still take a look at the sculpts, but my enthusiasm dropped drastically...

I was sorta hoping for more...:(

So how many do you guys think have to sell for it become more of a line than just a splash into the pool?

Is there plans for growing this into a line?

Or will this be a one shot kinda thing?

:-/ I was exited about the basic mini set. but only 4 iconics? no monsters? ..wow...now, i'm somewhat disappointed. i will buy a set purely out of love of paizo but think about it: isn't his product aimed at the beginner? now the beginner gets four characters (featured in the rpg box) and has no use for them because he cannot pit them against the monsters (featured in the rpg box's adventure)? i hope i'm missing some information about the mini-box, there surely must be more minis in there....

Grand Lodge

Honestly, I was afraid that the direction of this thread was going to lead to reactions like the 3 posts above.

The finalized announcement lines up exactly with the original press release and the comments from the staff. I was expecting 4-6 minis, primarily iconics and maybe a monster.... so it was on the low end of that, but still what I expected.

Remember that this is a licensed product. While I am sure that Paizo has a lot of input, WizKids are the ones making the product. And they will be the ones primarily determining what numbers they are satisfied with and where the line goes from here.

To be truthful it is directed completely at the Beginner...as the Beginers Box comes with token( or cradboard standees) for the monsters and such. Though with the set the players can have their special minis.

I was sorta hoping for a little thing for the old timers....maybe 8 minis total....4 Pcs 4 orcs or something.

Well to be honest, I'm glad this is only 4 minis for the price. If you think about it, what is the likelihood that customers will have the capital to purchase both the beginner box and the pre-painted minis if both of them were around $30? This should ensure that the minis at least get looked at and likely purchased which will hopefully spark more minis in the future.

Im good with it.I think most of us on the boards are talking about phase 2, 3 etc of this product. The current four are extensions of the beginner box, broken out to keep the price low as possible. It gives newbs something to add on, and mini only buyers don't need to contemplate buying the entire box just for four mini's.

As an aside, I think the idea of marketing the iconics is a wonderful. The other game has great name reconigation. I feel PF can gain market penetration through it's characters, that leads back to the game. I can see a line of comics, animated tv etc using the iconics in the future.

[Anecdote alert!]

When I ran Hollows last hope a few years ago for kids, they weren't as interested in the monsters as they were in their own characters minis. They were also overjoyed to get to keep their minis (I used commons for the pre-gen PCs) And I let the eldest keep her dice (Pretty sure the store got a sale out of that, even if it was a 3.x PHB)

If I were to run demos, I'd be sure to pull the same trick for kids, so the four iconics make for a good 'future gamers of America' investment.

I have no prblem with these being the first four minis. We have to get the ball rolling somehow. If more of us buy these, then WizKids will have incentive to make more. I, for one, have been looking forward to this for a long time.

Oops... didn't notice the product had a price listed. $12.99. I'm looking forward to getting these!

Honestly at $12.99 that puts each mini at $3.25 each (Before shipping/Tax) which is a decent non random pre paint price. I for one will be buying these, although I am sad Seoni isn't one because my wife would love that mini for her own use....

GMs are interested in all the good things to run games. Players want the perfect mini for their character.

I'm still looking for a good raptor figure for the druid in my party; I'm tired of the bent up little paper clip thing he uses that makes every combat take twice as long because it keeps falling over.

I've used the Harbinger Crested Felldrake most often

I would go with something like the Young Forest Dragon and leave off the wings :) Use some green stuff to fill in the holes and continue the scale pattern with a razorblade. Or perhaps add on a saddle, if he rides him.

For a cheap raptor mini that is way better than a paper clip, got to your local toy store and buy one of those dollar tubes of dinosaur toys.

That's the same one we use at our table.

Thing is, four icon minis for $12.99 is a one shot purchase. IMO very few people are going to purchase multiples of this set. I'll buy one, probably on dreaded Amazon with some other books this fall.

Lisa Stevens wrote:

I would have hoped for six minis for $12.99 to $15.99 delivered a month later. No, what I would have wished for would have been the beginners box and the minis at GenCon. If you could have pulled that off, I think you would have had the potential to see sales skyrocket. I can imagine the sales pitch now "Buy the Pathfinder Beginners Box, get the Iconic Mini's Free!" (or 1/2 price). I think you could have had a run like you did on the CRB.

-Swiftbrook

I have to agree with Swiftbrook. I don't see a lot of people buying this four set of minis more than once.

What I think would have been better is to make like 12 minis and put out randomized boosters packs of 4 for $7.99 or $8.99.

With the 12 minis, you would have the four iconics and the remaining would be NPCs and monsters that are in the pregenerated adventure for the Beginner Box.

With this set up, you would have people buying multiple booster boxes so they can 'get all the minis' for the adventure.

I know some would not like this set up, because it is the 'chase the mini(s)', but that's what sells multiple boxes.

I am just concerned that people are going to buy their one set and that's it. "Ok, I have my four iconics, that's all I need." I just would love to see a more minis come down the line, and I don't see this selling a lot. Hopefully I am wrong. I have done my part and put my preorder in.

Liberty's Edge

I will be one of the ones who will be buying the minis as they come out. I am looking forward to many more coming out.

Preordered. My money is on this experiment doing quite well for Paizo. I certainly want one of these first run packs for my mini collection, no matter how things shake out.

Well, this is just about what I expected, frankly. So I'm not disappointed. This is a reasonable "toe in the water" approach to the market by both Paizo and WizKids.

The real test won't be this first set, the real test will be what they release after these "iconics".

Still keeping my fingers crossed.

Some will. For me, it's great having multiples of the same figure. Then, when they run into, say, a six bandits and a leader, I have six figures to use for the bandits, rather than picking six figures at random.

As a player, sure, you wouldn't need more than one. However, as a GM I like having a minimum of four of a figure, often more.

I'll be buying at least two of these. Once I get them in my hands, I'll likely purchase a couple more. Minis is minis, and there's zero issue with multiples of the same.

This is a pilot product. They probably didn't want to test the waters with a complete collectible miniatures game.

The beginners' box doesn't have miniatures in the sense of "three-dimensional models made of plastic and painted." But it has tokens. Those are 2D pictures on cardboard to put on a plastic foot. There are 80 of those in the box - the 4 iconic characters as well as enemies/monsters.

Not as pretty as miniatures, but it'll do, it adds 80 critter representations to the deal without making it cost hundreds of bucks.

Actually I had this additional piece typed in that response about my wife that was about how I secretly wanted one too, but I couldnt make it not seem creepy, regardless of the humor. Sometimes humor doesn't translate very well over the net (or rather most times)....

How's $6 for a raptor?

Or $11.49 for 2 of them?

No offense, but long before I purchase miniature quality dinosaurs I'm first going to exhaust all of the normal toy versions.

Such as:
$9.23 "Feather" Dinos (some might work for types of raptors)
$9.34 Carnivorous Dinos (some potential raptors)
$6.99 Dino set (some small T-Rex's can sub for Raptors)
$9.34 Another Dino Set
$7.26 Slightly larger dinos in set
$15.95 Dino and caveman set (not only get dinos but also maybe orcs or ogres/hill giants and terrain)
$6.99 Huge sized dino skeletons
$9.27 some aquatic creatures (might be a little small for most)

Like I said, no offense, I'm sure that people that make dinos for roleplaying purposes specifically make great products. Yet if I am willing to settle for a little lower quality and do a little work of basing the creatures, I can get a lot more dinos for a lot less.

The funny thing about those prehistoric birds: they are the same mold as the one that came in the old set that had the original bulette and rust monster in them! Man, I wish I'd kept my bulettes and rust monsters!

You could even mount the creatures to wooden bases (paint them to match the terrain you want).

I wonder if there's a corellation between kids who imagine stories as they play with rust monsters and bulettes in their sandbox.... and life-long Pathfinder RPG fans.

I just want to second a motion for no random minis.

I hate random minis...

I have several hundred miniatures... and I like about 30 of them. I won't be doing that again.

I will purchase sets that clearly state what I will be getting, and I will NOT be purchasing sets that are random.

I am pretty sure to do large sets of minis (so more then like a box of 4 to 6) they will have to go random, however what if the mix was better? What if the rares were all AP or module end guys or solitary monsters? What if the commons were actually things you would like to have 8 of? For example, goblins, the creatures from the summon monster lists, orcs, city guard, etc?

The problem for Paizo/Whizkids is distribution to the stores. You either do what Asylum is doing and release a few a year (I am sure it is not more then 1 a month, and I think less then that) or you do 2 or 3 random sets of 40 to 60 miniatures a set per year. If the mix on the sculpts is better I would prefer the second.

Liberty's Edge

No random minis!!!

Paziocon went into the random business once before. They have since reduced those packs to less than a third of the original price. The Heroes Horde deck and the Relics of War deck.

Hope they have learned from it that random items don't work well.

24 good minis, that only cost you $120 is way better than 240 bad minis + 24 good minis that cost you a $250.

What if the distribution of minis was done better? So that you don't have as many crap minis. Would you spend $250 for 120 bad minis (or at least minis you wouldn't use) and 144 good minis?
