Recruiting for Legacy of Fire PbP.

Alright, I feel prepared to do an adventure path, and I have been convinced to run Legacy of Fire. I will run it for 4-6 players.

I prefer posters who can post on a daily basis. A day's absence every now and then is perfectly fine, but unexplained absence for more than a day is very disruptive. If a week passes by without a player posting, I will remove said player and possibly seek out a replacement.

Also, recruitment will end Sunday the 5th, or Monday the 6th of June, as I have exams coming up; I will also be moving the 4th of June. As such, I need some time to recuperate.

Now, onto character creation guidelines;

• Races: All standard races from the Core Rulebook will be allowed. Racial options from the APG will be allowed.
• Classes: All classes (Base and Prestige) from the Core Rulebook, APG and Ultimate Magic will be allowed. The Ninja and Samurai will also be allowed, as per the current Ultimate Combat playtest.
• Favoured Class: The favoured class options from the Core Rulebook and APG will be acceptable. If the Magus receives some form of favoured class bonus in the near future, after the campaign has started, I will allow Magus players to retcon their favoured class bonus to this new class bonus if they so wish.
• Alignment: I will only allow Good and Neutral alignments.
• Ability Scores: Characters must be created with 20-point buy. No stat can be raised above 18 (prior to racial modifiers), and no stat can be lowered below 8 (prior to racial modifiers).
• Feats: Any feat from the Core Rulebook, APG and UM will be allowed. Any other feat from Paizo-compatible systems must be approved by me.
• Traits: Characters will start with three traits. One of these traits MUST be a Legacy of Fire Campaign Trait.
• Hit Points: Characters will start out with Maximum hit points for their class at 1st level.
• Starting Gold: Characters will start with maximum gold for their class.
• The Words of Power system will be permitted for casters. For balance reasons, Borrow Future will not be an allowed Word Spell, unless it receives heavy errata.

Preferably, the party makeup should consist of your core roles: a tank, a damage dealer, a healer, a spellcaster and a face. Fulfilling more than one role is of course perfectly acceptable.

Also, the characters will be travelling together with the other characters for at least a week prior to the start of the adventure; I encourage applicants to come up with backstories together (though this is no requirement).

Furthermore, keep in mind that Legacy of Fire is (mainly) set in Katapesh; savannah and desert environments are aplenty.

The only unofficial requirement I have otherwise is that you create a generally party-friendly character.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I'm pleased to be the first one to state his interest in this and I'll have a character up in a little bit.

I'd like to put forth Harik, a NG Keleshite ranger (archery specialist, eventually), who's been working as a guide to a merchant family out of Katapesh city.

Can I play? Hazem, CG Keleshite Street Urchin, at your service... argh, maybe I should've been named Aladdin.. No, I don't SING... :(

edit: Worked on character a bit..

The Exchange

Tagging this thread for interest in applying. I am at work now, but I should be able to work up a character between tonight and tomorrow. Also this will be my first PbP if accepted, so any tips/info will be greatly appreciated. My character will likely be a sword and board style Fighter.

Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I'd like to join! The character I have in mind is an elven cavalier, LN, with a rigid sense of honor and duty. He is an orphan and grew up on the savanna, raised by a human tribe of horse nomads. As hes gotten older and those who were his foster parents have aged and died, he set out to learn more of his true heritage, or perhaps the tribe was all but wiped out by a gnoll warparty.

I'll post with the alias/concept shortly...

Note character under the profile is a work in progress. Please ignore everything but the icon.

Dear Masters,
I would have died three times were it not for Haleen. She found me as a babe lying in a rubbish heap. How she kept me alive as part of her chaotic life I will never know, but I know she loved me. She saved me again when she brought me here. I knew that I was unsuited to a life on the move, that I needed the stability that she could not provide. I remember her tears when I was acepted as a novice. She saved me the third time through her visits to me hee in the monestery. I wish to thank the masters or allowing them and I wish to thank them again for allowing Haleen to think she was not noticed. These visits kept the light of the greater world before me as I studied. Many of my sisters and brothers find fulfillment in their studies and the sky bounded by these walls, but she, like you my masters, knew I was not one of them. I could have fallen. I could have turned my back on the world. I would have stayed in the cloister but I would have died inside.

Of late her visits have become less frequent and she has been troubled. I have urged her to go to you for guidence but I think she trusted her own heart. It had been too long since her last visit.

Last night in meditation I saw her within my mind. She stood in a pool of blood before a statue of the dawnflower. Today I found a drawing of that same statue in the library. It is part of the great temple of Sarenrae in the lost city of Kelmarane.

I know that what I am doing is forbidden. I know that by reentering the world I forfit forever the saftey of the cloister. I know that I walk into danger and death. I do so willingly. If I can save her I will only owe her two lives.

Please forgive me
~Durant former brother of the path.

Human monk of the four winds. Finding Haleen campaign trait.Role would be damage dealer and occasional tank. Also a caster seeking hunter-killer.

Hey Patcher, I would like to play a tank in your game he would be a half orc paladin/sorcerer eventually going dragon disciple he would be looking for the woman who took him in and treated him with kindness, Haleen.

I love it when characters build synergy before even getting into the game.

Oh and it half, in case you forgot about these teeth.

Well I assume there is no blood relation. I expect we are both foundlings/orphans/whathaveyou who were raised by Haleen. I would have known you before I entered the monestary.

Durant will still happily call you brother.

And Llathander, you.

Hello.

Please consider Gilfroy Fezziwig. He may or may not fit with your group depending on the prevailing play style, as he is far from optimized (an oracle planning on multiclassing arcane sorcerer leading to mystic theurge). He is a complete illusion specialist, and would favour creative, role-played solutions to many combat scenerios (not that he's going to interfere with the folks killing things, and he will be very potent with his favourite spell colour spray). I wanted a character who could be flashy with his spells for fun without having to count every drop of magical energy. I understand that this style may not be for everyone and take no offence if he's rejected for that reason (or any other reason, either!).

If selected, I would add the Seeking Adventure trait, as that fits his wanderlust, stop the bleaching at 49 syndrome.

Tagging Yantur "the Sly" for consideration. Possibly one of the new Wizard elementalists (Wood or Metal, probably metal). With HeroLab I can whip up a character pretty quick. I'm willing to play almost anything if it fills a party need but Wizard is the character I'll probably submit. Will definitely be good aligned.

I'd like to work with others to create backgrounds but with almost two weeks to submit you'll get a lot of applications. There seems to be a strong orphan theme so far; I could certainly work with that.

SJ

Here's my elven cavalier. The profile is updated, but I posted the bits below for ease of access! Looks like there's already some good ideas floating around... I hope I get picked!

Stats:
STR 16; DEX 14; CON 12; INT 10; WIS 10; CHA 14
hp 12 (base 10 +1 Con +1 favored class)
Initiative +4 (+2 Dex, +2 trait)
BAB +1; CMB +4; CMD 16
Fort +4; Ref +2; Will +0

Skills Diplomacy +6, Handle Animal +6, Intimidate +6, Ride +6

Feats Precise Strike [bonus], Weapon Focus (heavy blades)

Traits Forlorn, Seeking Your Roots, Warrior of Old

Special Challenge 1/day, Mount (horse...TBD), Tactician (1/day; 3 rounds), Order of the Lion (Valenar)

Alternate Racial Trait Eternal Grudge (replaces Elven Magic)

Appearance:

Sihdrin is a male elf in the dawn of his adulthood. Although a century old, he is still young in comparison to the long span of elven lives. He is exceptional tall, standing just short of seven feet, and his lithe frame belies formidably physical strength.

Sihdrin has black hair, worn long, but always trimmed and appropriately arranged. When riding, he usually keeps his hair in a decorated war braid. His large, elven eyes are darkest blue, almost violet, contrasting his pale skin.

Sihdrin details his appearance impeccably. Whether due of an upbringing in the nobility or compulsive mentality, he will make pains to always wear the correct fashion, for the correct occasion, in the correct manner. Cleanliness and hygiene are very important, especailly in the wilds, and he will spend extra time maintaining his gear, clothes and weapons.

Background:

Sihdrin does not know who his parents were. He was raised by human foster parents, part of a nomadic tribe of horse riders. As Sihdrin grew (slowly, compared to his human counterparts), he became a fierce warrior and protector of the tribe. Unfortunately, those who fostered him in his youth, and even his friends and peers, all grew old and died while Sihdrin was only passing his adolescence.

The only link Sihdrin has ever had to his past is a masterfully wrought curveblade in the elven style. Sihdrin was told it was given by his parents on the day he was taken, but by the time he was old enough to learn, none of the nomads from that time yet lived. Sihdrin dedicated himself to mastering the elegant weapon, his only link to the past.

Recently, one of his friends, the great-grandson of a tribal wisdom from the time when Sihdrin was adopted, found hints in the tribal records that pointed to the village of Kelmarane as the likely place where he was found. Curiosity overwhelmed Sihdrin, and he soon set out to find Kelmarane and hopefully reclaim a piece of his heritage.

Equipment:

    Weapons & Armor
  • mwk elven curveblade (trait bonus)
  • light mace
  • lance
  • chain shirt
  • shield, light steel

    Gear
  • bedroll
  • crowbar
  • pot, iron
  • belt pouch (2)
  • trail rations (5 days)
  • rope, hemp (50 ft)
  • shovel
  • waterskin (3)
  • coins (66gp, 3sp, 5cp)

    Horse
  • military saddle
  • bit and bridle
  • saddlebags
  • feed (5 days)

I would like to present Badi Al'Mukhabat Nabih Ka'im for consideration. His profile, while still incomplete, is under the name found above and nearly finished.

Here is my character, Marketus Jackson! Adventurer, Pathfinder, and child of of the Marids!

All Relevant information is in the profile. If selected I can discuss with other party members what sort of connection I have with them.

I would like to put forth my interest and shall come up with a character concept later tonight when I get home. Initially, I'm thinking desert druid with a vermin animal companion.

Liberty's Edge

DM Patcher: Would you allow the "Gillman" race from the Inner Sea Campaign World Guide? Yes, I realize it sounds counterintuitive for a desert/savannah campaign, but I think it would make for some interesting roleplaying to have a 'fish-out-of-water' as part of the campaign.

I was thinking of him being either a bard or aberrant blooded sorcerer.

Dotting my interest - will be coming up with a Summoner / Synthesist for your review. Built as a frontline fighter / face, with the Eidolon resembling an efreet or similar outsider of fire.

Presenting Llathader Half-Orc Paladin attempting to find his surrogate mother Haleen.

Backstory needs some work so I will put that in when time presents itself.
Also, I am considering between two deities Saranrae or Shelyn.

As far as what role he would fill it appears he would be a jack of all trades.

Kehlysch, the aberrant-blooded gillman sorcerer. He's a work in progress.

Presenting Saarah Elven Sorceress of Calistria. Her background is not up yet but I'll get it up tomorrow for sure.

This is the Sythesist proposal from Mark Sweetman. Still need to iron out alot of creases, but will do so over the next 24-48 hours and add background, appearance, et al.

Brother, did Saranrae visit your dreams too and tell you where Haleen was?

Sunshadow21 here with Alfred Windbottom, desert druid. Some things still need to be reworked, as this is a an old profile retooled, but the basics are there. I reworked the Reclaiming Your Roots trait a bit to take into account that Alf, being a gnome, would actually be old enough to remember the town somewhat.

Dotting this. Will come back with character concepts and such at a later date.

Gilfroy, ever seeking knowledge and strange puzzles, would have latched on to the caravan going to explore the town which local legends say was mysteriously destroyed. Perhaps this is a puzzle whose time has come to be solved, or perhaps it's something that needs to be reburied in the sands. Gilfroy will let Sivanah tell him which way it should fall.

Holy crap at the amount of responses. I suppose this is what I get when I go to bed right after creating a recruitment topic.

I'll address each question/reply individually and list up the amount of applications so far. Also, I won't discriminate between experienced PbPers and new PbPers.

I suppose what'll be dreadful for me is that when the two weeks have passed I'll have way too many applications. I won't be able to guarantee that your application will be picked.

If you're new to PbP, I'm curious of your roleplaying style. If you're accepted, don't hesitate to ask questions. I like to think I don't bite; I'm sure the other players will also help you.

I've seen this multiclass/prestige class combo before, but only on paper - how would it play out?

I love seeing concepts like these! However, my actual concern is this: when you say he is "far from optimized"... I suppose one could argue that there isn't a difference between unoptimized and liability, but for the sake of my question, say there is: will Gilfroy be unoptimized, or will he be a liability? Because if it is the latter then it might be a problem. If it's the former, then that's all right with me.

I'm not looking for optimized characters as much as actual characters with flavour and an intriguing concept, and you, my good sir, are certainly on the right track. (And yes, I have read the ongoing debates of roleplaying versus min-maxing and whether or not they're mutually exclusive; I'm ambivalent on the subject, but don't believe they are mutually exclusive.)

I certainly see no problem in keeping your background vaguely undefined until you come closer to the end of the recruitment; also, while I encourage players to work on backgrounds together, it isn't an instantaneous ticket to be accepted into the PbP. It does improve your odds, however.

Only time will tell. As mentioned earlier, with a two-week recruitment topic there will be a lot of applications.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to say no to the Gillman race. It's not an issue of balance, I simply prefer to stick to the core races.

Sarenrae is more worshipped in Katapesh, from what I can tell, than Shelyn. However, I am a huge fan of Shelyn in general. Follow whichever one you like.

Current Applicants are as follows:
mathpro18 - Saarah (Elf Sorcerer)
John Woodford - Harik (Human Ranger)
Anatidate - Hazem Al Kareem (Human Rogue)
Keldan Marr - Unnamed so far (Fighter)
nomadicc - Sihdrin (Elf Cavalier)
PoorWanderingOne - Durant (Human Monk)
DaWay - Llathander (Half-Orc Paladin)
Nazard - Gilfroy Fezziwig (Oracle)
Sir Jolt - Yantur "The Sly" (Wizard)
dathom - Badi Al'Mukhabat Nabih Ka'im (Half-elf Wizard)
Stomphoof - Marketus Jackson (Human Sorcerer)
Mark Sweetman - Lathrat Ke'Shin (Human Summoner)
Sunshadow21 - Alfred Windbottom (Gnome Druid)

@Cuchulainn - As mentioned, I will not be permitting the Gillman race. If you want to rework your character to one of the core races, I'll put you up on the list.

If I missed any applications so far, I apologise - I'm overwhelmed. 14 different applicants in less than 10 hours! (and 12 days to go...!)

And it will only get worse. Believe me, after 3 days, you could well have 3 dozen applicants. The ratio of players to GMs is that high.

sunshadow21 wrote:

I know. I'm starting to think two-week recruitment might have been a mistake.

But we reap what we sow! And what I certainly will be getting is dozens upon dozens of brilliant applicants! And no faster way to baldness (which is awesome!) as I'll be tearing my hair out trying to figure out which applications to choose from!

Most new DMs give a week or two for recruitment and end up cutting it off after 3 or 4 days just to keep the list managable. I went through the same thing myself.

sunshadow21 wrote:

We'll see what happens, in any case.

He would play out as a tanking damage dealer but because of high charisma could operate as a face.

Rileplay wise he would first concerned with finding his "sister" Haleen and meeting an commitments struck. Second he would want to make sure the light of the dawnflower never saw an end.

Gilfroy would be a liability if the campaign ended up fighting a lot of things with constant see invisibilty or true seeing, as much of his energies are devoted to the art of illusions. I can't recall if true seeing makes you immune to patterns, but a lot of patterns don't have good combat applications. He'll be taking spell penetration and heighten spell to help deal with SR and Save DCs, but he won't have the highest level spells (no thirds until 10th level after all), but he'll have other abilities like colour sprays at 2nd level that treat all enemies as if they had 5 fewer hit dice, so a lot more unconscious baddies, even in the mid levels.

I don't know the Legacy of Fire story at all, though I can guess it has something to do with gnolls and genies, maybe fire elementals too!

I'll ask a friend of mine who knows this character and the AP and see if, without giving anything away, he can tell me if it's a bad fit.

Gilfroy Fezziwig wrote:

That sounds like a plan. Do inform me if your friend deems it a bad pick.

Almost no divine casters so I'll submit a cleric later today. Have baby now.

Aw, a shame. Thank you for informing me.

Please consider adding the adventure seeking Halfling sandman bard Jimmy to the adventure. Jimmy wasn't always on the up-and-up, however the last time the pathfinder society came through town, Jimmy fell head over heals for a beautiful oracle serving the society. He vowed to find her again, cleaned up his act, and joined the pathfinder society as quickly as he could.
Unfortunately, his new love interest had moved on, but Jimmy is resolved to uphold his vow and find her, no matter how far he must travel nor how many obstacles he must overcome.

I've actually glanced through Legacy of Fire AP a bit as at one point I was debating running it myself. I didn't look at the details, as I decided I wanted to play this particular one instead, but from the general feel I got from the first section at least, illusions would fit as well as anything, Gilfroy. And don't worry Patcher, I don't remember anything that couldn't be found in the Player's Guide; as I said, I deliberately avoided reading encounter details.

I trust my players enough to think that even if they do know some spoilers, they won't metagame the campaign to death. (OMFG WE'RE ABOUT TO FIGHT GENIES PREPARE YOUR ANTI-GENIE SPELLS) Don't worry.

I have added Jimmy to the list of applicants, Ayrphish.

I certainly try to keep character knowledge separate from my personal knowledge. If I really feel compelled to use my knowledge, I make sure to give my character the necessary background and knowledge skills to justify it. Otherwise, it just saps the fun from the game for everyone.

My friend who has run the path tells me that an illusionist should be a good fit, so Gilfroy should just be unoptimized, not a liability for the party.

Gilfroy Fezziwig wrote:

Screw optimization and go for FLAVOR! Thats how I roll :D

I mean, I am playing a sorcerer when Wizards are generally considered better arcane casters :P And I am doing Words of Power which loses out a bit on damage and effects (no magic missle for example, mage armor effect only 1 min per level ect)

Hell I got an oracle in another PBP with a 5 str haha.

I have always wanted to see an illusionist in action anyway :D

Thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. I can't find the player's guide online for this AP however...

Brilliant!

EDIT! Oops, forgot to switch to DM mode.

Bahram, you're added to the applicant list. Also, I have to ask...all three mental scores under 10? Any particular reason for this? I know it goes within the guidelines I've specified but could you elaborate?
