At dusk of the new moon, each of you received a letter from the Master of Absalom Rauthus Levatiu, personally handed to you by his pet crow Selm.
The letter

Spoiler:
My beloved brothers,
For too long we have spent our time in the shadows, but our time to shine is at hand
We have much to discuss at length, and we will, arrive at the Guild House of Absalom on the eve of the next full moon. There will be several of our member present there, for our goals to succeed our forces will need to be consolidated and focused more than usual.
Learn from Pain
Master of Absalom

The Absalom Guild House is a small nested building between several houses, obscuring the large complex underground which is the true Guild House. The doorman guides you to the Guild House’s dining hall, a large gothic room with a single large table for 30 people, already there are a dozen other guild members, at the head of the table sits the Master of Absalom, a human in his late 90s, his head completely bald, his white beard longer than he is, his translucent ghost white skin making him look like a depiction of death. He is dressed in a blood red robe, and despite his age is rather full of energy and vigour surpassing that a man a third his age. On his shoulder sits his pet crow Selm. Beside Rauthus Levatiu is his right hand man, Uboro Waluka, a morbidly obese heavily tan human in his late 40s, Uboro being renowned for his sadistic experiments lasting years of torture at a time. The last person of note is sitting opposite Rauthus, the Guild House Master, a young female elf of impressive beauty, Alara Seliuma, she is dressed in a white robe and is wearing a gold dove pendant. Alara is known for her devotion to removing pain and her vast knowledge on the properties of pain. Before beginning Rauthus waits for everyone invited to arrive

Bal-Dashiir arrives at the Guild Hall promptly, noting the others already gathered there. He inclines his head in a gesture of respect to Rauthus and then to Alara. As his eyes meet with Uboro's, he pauses momentarily before again inclining his head respectfully.

GM:
Midnight: So much flesh on that one. Almost a shame that he serves the purpose of Pain loyally. It would be a pleasure to carve him like a roast.
Bal-Dashiir: Quiet, old friend. I need my wits about me here, in this place.
This takes place telepathically, obviously.

The tall half-elf slides into a chair smoothly, folding his hands in front of him and observing new arrivals as they join the group.

Maeltheron strides purposefully into the Guild House's dining hall, effortlessly gliding to the closest available seat to the head of the table. The elf is athletically built and sinewy. The hilt of a large sword and the top of a longbow extend above each shoulder on his back, but his graceful movements are unhampered by the weapons. He quickly scans the occupants at the table. After a brief bow at the waist in the direction of Master Levatiu, his eyes linger, perhaps a bit too long, upon the beautiful elf, Alara Seliuma. He smoothly seats himself with a mischievous smile playing at his lips.

A beautiful good evening to all of you.

By Calistria's short hairs, Alara looks absolutely gorgeous tonight! What I would not give for just a few moments in her warm embrace...

A completely hairless human slides into the room, moving with a nearly boneless grace. He wears green robes and has a small red viper wrapped around his upper arm. He sits, staring un-self consciously at the Grand Master with a disconcerting intensity. He doesn't seem to blink, but his tongue slips between his lips, as if tasting the air.

Rauthus Well it seems almost everyone has been able to arrive without difficulty, we’ll wait for the few late comers for a little while longer before we commence

Rauthus We’ve waited long enough, down to the matter at hand, this is a letter from Grand Master Visicum he pauses and shows the letter with a black wax seal, there are a number of tasks to be accomplished, so we have selected each of you to a particular task according to your skills, Bal-Dashiir, Maeltheron Timmerond, Allarion, please follow Alara to the next room she will tell you about the task you have been chosen for

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Maeltheron rises from his seat and proceeds to follow Alara to the next room. He smirks as he thinks to himself.

Hmmm...a particular task according to MY skills. Someone is not long for this world. Time to bring the pain...wonder who the mark will be? Wow, Alara looks even better from behind...

Allarion rises, and bows to the master. He follows the others to the room, eager and intrigued by this summons.

Bal-dashiir rises along with the others and follows Alara, marking the Elven Archer's eyes lingering on the woman.

Telepathic Sword Conversation:

Midnight: Look at him, his eyes are all over her. Should he not suffer for his impure thoughts?
Bal-Dashiir: Since when have you been concerned with purity? Besides, Maeltheron has served the Guild well in times past. Just as with that fat f*ck back there, he has furthered the cause of Pain faithfully, as far as I know. You must learn to view the wider picture.

As the group moves into the next room, Bal-Dashiir's lips curl in a cruel half-smile.

This job must require precision, if we are all to participate. I must admit, I have grown accustomed to working alone...

Midnight:
not alone

...but guildmates as capable as yourselves will be welcome company. So, Alara - who needs to suffer?

As you enter the other room, you notice that a figure is standing in the corner of the room, away from all the light. Alara nods at the creature and waits till everyone is inside before closing the door in a hurry. Once that is done the creature bows before you and steps into the light, revealing a horrendous monstrosity that may once have been a man, or an elf, most of the flesh on its face has been peeled off, it has no eye lids or lips. Looking at it might remind one of a zombie or some other form of undead. It licks its gums and speaks in a dry, and evil voice, “Greatints, etcult ‘a voit, witout lipts its hart to talk. ‘Y ‘aster has askt you to kill, torture and turn like ‘e” it bows and lets Alara finish

Alara ”We have been asked to kill a merchant, torture another and turn a third one like our employer over there, here is a scroll with their names” she hands a scroll to each of you with the names ”deal with them how you wish, but the Master asked for you to work together, any questions?”

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Maeltheron quickly scans the scroll to see if he recognizes any of the names. He then addresses both Bal-Dashiir and Allarion with a quiet calm.

Well, my skills, as you may have heard, lie in bringing pain through death. I would like the opportunity to plan the killing stroke on the first one marked for death. I also posess some degree of skill at torture. Therefore, I would be happy to assist in the tasks involving the remaining two merchants. Although I am also used to working alone, it will be a pleasure to work with the both of you to effectuate the perfection of pain during this assignment. Thoughts, gentlemen?

He then turns to Alara and the client.

I have two questions, my lady. First for our client, how exactly did you come by your current condition so that we will know how best to mimic the result? And, for you Alara, is there any additional compensation beyond the satisfaction of performing such services for their successful completion?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

Alara “There is, a bag of gold each per merchants, 600 gold in total to each one of you, and our client has some knowledge he will disclose after each successful venture. I believe he will tell you how he came to be once you’ve dealt with the first problem”

Bal-Dashiir shrugs calmly.

Plan away, Maeltheron - although when death beckons to a man, he has a way of foiling the best-laid plans. Such has been my experience, anyway. Let's see those names, eh?

He reaches out a hand to accept the scroll.

Wise counsel Bal-Dashiir.

Maeltheron winks at the half-elf.

Alara, where is the location of the first merchant marked for death. As you say, let us deal with that problem, first?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

Alara ”His name is El’ibin Halani, he will be arriving in a week’s time on his private ship”

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Does the ship have a name that you are aware of so that I can begin to track the mark the moment that he steps on dry land? Also, does he maintain a residence here in Absolom that you are aware of?

@GM: Just a heads up...talon72, RL friend of Bal-Dashiir and Maeltheron has just posted a PC concept in the original recruitment thread. We were not sure if you still needed more characters in the party?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

Alara The ship is called The Red Chest. He doesn’t have a residence here, and being paranoid he likes to stay in different places with each visit, although where that is arranged ahead of his arrival by a month or so

thanks for the heads up, yea i'd like another player

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Thank you Alara, and thank you...sir.

Maeltheron turns to Bal-Dashiir and Allarion.

It appears that we have some legwork to do. I suggest we do a little fact gathering on the mark before his arrival in a week. We may be able to find where he is staying. Plus, we can get to know one another's various talents. This will enable us to formulate a plan that puts all of our significant skills to their best use. Let's make this a truly artistic and painful kill, shall we?

We should try to determine where he's going to be staying, yes. Surely we should be able to do so within a weeks time.

We should probably hit The Puddles last. Even a man of any worth attempting to avoid notice wouldn't be caught dead there. I'll take the Petal District first, if that works for you both...

I'm not sure how you want to handle such a search, GM, but I'm assuming we could ask around discreetly for three days in various districts on "fast-forward"? That way we'd have time to plan other contingencies if the search comes up dry.

Dark Archive

a successful diplomacy check for gathering information will allow you to find someone who knows, and we'll play out that encounter, so diplomacy checks...

1d20 ⇒ 9 (no modifier)

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Wow...that'll work!

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

indeed that will work, you find a halfling and a half-elf in a small tavern in the Petal District who seem to know where El'ibin will be staying

How far from the Docks to the location of his stay? Is the place he is staying in the Petal District? Is it an Inn or private residence?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

well thats what you have to make these 2 talk to learn

My bad...did not realize that were were RPing it out. I prefer it that way. Thanks :-)

Allarion and Bal-Dashiir, I have found a couple individuals, a Half-Elf and a Halfling in a small tavern in the Petal District that are rumored to posess information regarding the place where our mark will be staying when he arrives in a weeks time. Please accompany me to the tavern so that we can elicit information to further insure our success in completing the job.

I'll come with you, Maeltheron, but I'm not the greatest at dealing with people. I'll leave that to you and Allarion.

**Prods Allarion** You still there, hoss?

Sorry, travelling for the holiday plus two job interviews. Been a busy couple days!

"I can deal with people." Allarion says, giving his a little too long stare at the two.

ok moving on...

You arrive at the small and grimy tavern of the Petal District, as far away from the port as one could get in Absalom, filled with the many servants of the merchants of the city, local workers and the odd city watchman off duty. At the back of the tavern sitting around a large table with an exotic blue-green cloth that is strikingly different from the other table cloths in the tavern are sitting the Halfling and the half-elf that you heard about. Sitting next to them is also a rather large and well build dwarf, muscles bulging and skin covered with scars. All three are dressed in white shirts and trousers; they are wearing golden shoes and turbans. The table has room for another 7 people to sit around and there are plates with food for all the places around the table. The serving girls of the tavern are staying well clear from the blue-green table.

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Maeltheron will lead the group of three to the nearest available table to the one where the Elf and Halfling sit that will seat three comfortably. He hails a serving girl.

Hello dear, I would like a glass of Elven Gold, if you have any, and whatever my friends would like. What is the story with the blue-green table...big party tonight, or what?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

"Oh no sir, they always come here in, all locals working for some merchant from far away, just leaving actually, well except for those 3, they always stay here until we kick them out late at night"

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

In a hushed voice, after the Serving Girl departs, Maeltheron leans in to the center of the table an whispers to the others.

Should we grab one of them tonight when they exit and force the location out of him through great pain? If we are unsuccessful,we can dispose of him and grab another. We are bound to succeed eventually. Thoughts?

Mayhap we could just ask or bribe them? Have these servants done anything noteworthy that they should be offered the purification of pain? Perhaps they are not particularly loyal.

Midnight:
Who cares, hurt them.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Whew, close.
Bal-Dashiir: Your advice is tempting, as always. Yet, you are the blade and I am the wielder. We may hurt these unfortunates, but if we do, it will be because I choose to.

Either way, I will be pleased to get the information we seek.

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

I thought about that, but I would imagine that some trickery would need to be in order to obtain the information that we seek if we do not grab them. I fear that a straightforward questioning without purification by pain and death would simply tip off the mark of our investigations.

Missing or wounded employees might tip the mark off as well, might it not? Might you be able to take the abducted person's place, Allarion? That would provide us with someone on the "inside", so to speak.

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Excellent idea Bal-Dashiir! What say you, Allarion? Do you have that capability?

Allarion stares in his strange way. "I may be able to perform such a service, yes. I will not be able to duplicate memories or mannerisms, but mere form? Yes."

Then it would seem prudent for us to study these louses for a day or two, to give you a better grasp of their mannerisms. The dwarf seems to be the hardiest, and would likely last the longest under torture - a good thing in some ways, and not so good in others. Tonight, we should simply see where they go. Taking one of them during their rest would seem the safest bet, and the least likely to spread alarm. Does that seem an acceptable plan?

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Ok, then, let's begin to shadow the half-elf tonight. We can follow when he leaves and determine when it will be best to make our move. If the opportunity does not present itself, then we have a few nights to shadow him. I think the closer to the arrival of the mark in a week, the better. We do not want to have Allarion in a position where he has to maintain his role as a replacement for too long a period of time.

Bal-Dashiir nods his agreement, and settles in to a drink.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

alright, to prevent them from noticing you following them/studding them could i have a stealth or performance (acting) roll?

Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

Stealth: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (11) + 18 = 29

I am not stealthy.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

It is ok, I should have been clearer that I intended to do most of the shadowing until we find a place to grab the half-elf.

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

alright, after tracking the half-elf deep into the night, after he took many, many drinks, he wanders off into an ally, its a dead end, he collapses, drunk, at the end of it

Well, that was silly of him!

Wizard - Bladesinger/6; AC: 16 (20BS); HP: 32/32; Init: +4; Perc: +3; Bladesong Used 0/2; Spell Slots Used 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/3 3rd 0/3

If we are in close proximity to the Guild, then we will escort our unconcious half-elf there to what I assume is one of our basement torture rooms. If not, is there a safe house for the Guild nearby?

Dark Archive

male wraith biomedical scientist lv5/ film director lv3

well the guild is within brisk walking distance, you're going to need to carry him there, since he's unconcious, but between the three of you that shouldn't be a problem
