[SGG] Revised Dragonrider with Hero Lab!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The revised Genius Guide to the Dragonrider PDF is out now. It has more than a year's worth of clarifications, errata, and development based on hundreds of comments from customers. Also, it now includes Hero Lab files, allowing customers to make dragonriders and their dragon steeds with the Hero Lab character builder!

All this as a free update, of course, to all our great fans who already bought the original PDF, and at no increased cost to new customers who want to check it out!

Oh my...does this mean we might see similar Herolab files for the other classes in time?

If so, let me be the first to say: Hooray!

Very cool, Hero Lab is very helpful!

That is absolutely my hope, although i can not yet say for sure which ones, or how soon.

But I like using Hero Lab for my home games, which use a lot of SGG material, so...

Awesome, thanks for the update. I dont use herolabs but I still appreciate it being offered with the pdf. This product I believe was the one that got me started on SGG in the first place. Because seriously who DOESNT want to get to ride a dragon in Pathfinder/DnD? I havent yet gotten to play one, but I've had one in my campaign for more then a year now, and I have enjoyed the players take on things. Hmmm maybe I should stat up a few dragon rider badies in honor of the revision. All the better to provide my pc's with a little death from above!

For some reason I keep getting an error code when ever I try and import the dragonrider file. =/

Since I feel like a total nub right now, perhaps I am doing it wrong. Would someone mind telling me exactly how they import the dragonrider into their herolabs and get it to work?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! =D

I have been playing a level 7 Silver Dragonrider in a Pbp i'm in and thus far it has been interesting to say the least. Although this is a pre-update dragonrider so hopefully the revision will improve the class some.

I got past the initial error then stopped when HeroLab warned me that the import file would alter the game and my previous saved files might not work anymore. While I appreciate the add-on.. not willing to risk that.

To get past the initial error: Change the file name.. remove the parenthetical date with decimal separators altogether.

Owen:
This name format is not a good choice; I suspect either the parentheses or the decimals are breaking something in the import, so I would avoid both in future :) The underscore seems to be ok, though, so maybe that's what you need to use.

Heya Folks!

It works fine on my machine, which doesn't mean there might not be something we need to do. I lack the skills to create these files myself, so I have a question in the the creator. We'll see if he has any advice I can pass along.

Min Bein'Meleth Rámalóce wrote:

Interesting.

That looks like the error I got. When it did not repeat after I changed the file name, I presumed that was the cause.

After re-extracting from the ZIP, it worked for me.. though I am not seeing the new content. There is a new User content source, "Super Genius Games", but I do not see the Dragonrider class available to select.

I don't have the file, but I have some experance with messing them up (lol).

You will need to have a simple file name if you are using the extractor.

The you may also run into errors with other custom files from other files.

Once it is imported you will have to check the box with the new material, most likely for this "Super Genius Games" in the configure hero screen.

I hope that helps some.

I'm trying this too....

I've renamed the file with a simple file name and double-clicked to import and it seemed OK enough but the class isn't the list of classes and there's no SGG box to check in the 'configure hero' window.

Cheers
Mark

IDK, maybe it put the file somewhere else. Do a search for *.user on your computeer and see where the file is.

It needs to be in:
C:\HeroLab\data\pathfinder

If not maybe they can e-mail you the user file.

BTW - Very Helpful site is:

Hey All,

I am the one that put this together for Owen. I am trying to understand the issue as I currently can't duplicate it at all.

Renaming the file should not be needed as I have used this type of naming convention before.

Let me start by going over the steps to get this into Hero Lab.

1) Close down HL if it is open. HL should NOT be running initially.

2) Double click the file SGG_Dragonrider(2011.05.08).hl their really should be no reason to rename it.

2a) Though one idea here is their could be window authority issues actually. Their is a reason why HL gets placed into C:\HeroLab and not C:\Program Files\HeroLab. So instead of a rename those with an issue plz copy the SGG_Dragonrider(2011.05.08).hl to your HeroLab\Download folder. Then double click on it from their as that will should remove any window authority issues.

3) HL will start and present the Import Window. This window tells you what data set the import is going to go into and what will be imported. So you will be able to see that two files will be added to your data set.
-PFRPG_SGG_Dragonrider.user
-PFRPG_Sources.1st

So their is NO WAY that this can corrupt ANY character you have previously built. So when you tell it to import and get the warning message it is safe to proceed. HL ALWAYS says this as it is possible for a import to actually have .por (Portfolio/Character) files but I doubt SGG will ever have a need for that.

The 2 files simply get placed into your HeroLab\data\pathfinder folder. So anytime you feel like removing them you can just go to that folder and delete them.

4) After the import is successful you should be asked which game system to start. Pick Pathfinder and on the "Configure Your Hero" window their will be a new Parent source under User Content that says "Super Genius Games" and under it will be the "Dragonrider".

5) Put a check mark next to Dragonrider and press OK. You will now find the Dragonrider class in HL.

6) If when starting Pathfinder game system ANY error message happens then HL will go into Safe Mode and stop loading ALL .user files. So for those that said you see "Super Genius Games" but not dragonrider this could be the reason. So did anyone get a error message and what was it?

So now that is out of the way. I would ask anyone with a problem to go through those steps above again. If you get ANY error message please be so kind as to fully copy/paste the info into this thread and I will try to help.

@Min Bein'Meleth Rámalóce - With your Access Violation could you let me know what you did? Otherwise that type of crash really needs to be reported to Lone Wolf actually as nothing in a .user file can/should cause HL to actually Hard Crash.

@Kevin - I am interesting in learning from your experience in this area. You should still have my email so shot me a message. I do use this exact method to give new House Rules out to my gaming group and never have had an issue actually.

Thanks

And, what's this? A preview of things to come (emphasis mine)?

Quote:
While it is unusual for a dragonrider to take anything other than a metallic or chromatic dragon as a steed, it is not totally unknown. A GM wishing to allow such characters can use the draconic companions from The Genius Guide to the Dracomancer as additional dragon steed choices. Note that a dragonrider who takes such a steed does not gain bonus spells from a cleric domain or a sorcerer bloodline – that power is exclusive to dracomancers, regardless of what dragon a dragonrider may choose as a mount.

Now this is something (else) to get excited about! When does the Genius Guide to the Dracomancer release?

No firm date yet. But I can say "soon" I think. I'm pretty sure. Stan! isn't likely to see this thread, anyway.

Yeah, I'm going to say it.

"Soon."

Hey ShadowChemosh, thanks.

As someone who works with software development professionally, I have to say no one should ever say "there is no way". I have users who find ways to break software I thought was "bullet-proof" all the time :)

My initial import effort was through the "Tools|Import Files" menu option. The file was in the Downloads folder of HeroLab when I imported it, and it generated an error very much like the one posted here (though I cannot swear the codes were the same).

After the warning about possible corruption, I canceled the import. With a fresh Portfolio open, I repeated the import. That seemed to work as expected; I saw the import files dialog and the import reported that it had succeeded.

After that, I saw the Super Genius Games entry in the User sources, and selected it, but I see no Dragonrider class in the class list.

I have repeated the import just now starting by double-clicking the import file. The dialog looked the same again, but still no Dragonrider class.

Not the recommend way to do the import actually. As even if successful you have to do a full restart of HL now. The steps I have listed above is the better way to go. As step one actually says to not have HL running.

So I tried doing the import the way you listed using my clean CORE data set and the import ran without issues. I did a restart to HL and the Dragonrider source appears correctly.

I assume, as you didn't give the error, that you mean to say HL did a hard crash? If so I think you have a problem with Hero Lab and you should report the issue to Lone Wolf actually.

Urath DM wrote:

You actually selected "Dragonrider" not "Super Genius Games" correct? Not that you should be able to actually. Hmm actually the only way you could select SGG would be if you have a very old version of Hero Lab.

If you go to "Help->About Hero Lab..." you are running V3.6g correct?

Hi all,

Colen from Lone Wolf, publishers of Hero Lab, here. Sorry to hear that people are having problems importing the file - as ShadowChemosh said, please make sure you're running the latest version of Hero Lab, v3.6g.

If anyone is experiencing problems with Hero Lab crashing when they import the file, please email me directly at colen@wolflair.com with the details (like Min Bein'Meleth Rámalóce posted), and we'll see if we can figure out what's causing this problem. Thanks!

Sadly still can't get it to load, other then reloading HL entirely I'm not sure what the problem is. The HL file for dragonrider is 18.3 kb while packed and when I unzip it, it becomes 17.1 kb which doesn't make much sense too me. Other then that little discrepancy I am not sure what else the problem can be =/

I've sent the error report off to Lonewolf TS and a small description of what I was doing each time the HL crashed. Hopefully I get this fixed soon lol.

BTW thanks for all the detailed explinations of how to load the file above. That info will surely help out someone who is unsure of how to proceed, it just stinks that I can't get past stage 1 or 2 lol >.<;

And thus my idiot hat is squarely on.

I had a user file for other SuperGenius stuff.
Once I selected the Dragonrider source entry under the SuperGenius GROUP, it seems to be fine.

Thanks very much.

I would recommend contacting HL support actually as that is a crash of the main program. You can email them at support@wolflair.com. The importer and stuff is all built by Lone Wolf so any issues that come up I can't help with at all. =(

The above is a little out of date as HL v3.8 moved the location of its files to be more standard. So yes HL.exe is now in Program Files and the download directory is now in a hidden folder on most versions of windows.

The data files are now stored in:
Windows 7 - "C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder"
Windows XP/Vista - "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder"

Hope that helps.

Sigh can't edit posts on this forum.

So the above is for the older version of HL BEFORE v3.8 which moved all the files around.

Hero Lab program is now stored in C:\Program Files\HeroLab.

The data files are now stored in:
Windows 7 - "C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder"
Windows XP/Vista - "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder"
Note: You can always find the "data" folder containing the user files by going to the Tools menu within Hero Lab and choosing Explore Folders->Program Data Folder.

For those that installed SGG_Dragonrider(2011.07.08).hl which is the latest version you can do the following to delete it/remove it from HL if you want.
From inside of HL go to Tools->Manage Third-Party Updates... Select the dragonrider and click delete.

A character in my game is making a dragonrider after his previous character died fighting some stone giants. Looking over the book, he has a few questions that I wanted to post here, since I wasn't sure as to the answers.

First, the silver dragon steed has, as one of its special qualities at 8th level, "incinerate." I'm presuming that this is in error, as incinerate is an ability of great red wyrms. What should this be?

Secondly, I just wanted to confirm that his dragon steed does not have the change shape special ability, correct?

Sorry, I try to watch the boards, but I don't always catch every question. :D The silver dragon's incinerate should instead be cloudwalking.

I'll add it to my errata list for the next update.

Dragonrider on d20pfsrd.com is now updated.

I have a question regarding the Silver Dragon steed's paralyzing breath.

paralyzing breath (counts as two uses of breath weapon and uses same area, targets failing a Fortitude save are affected as by a hold person spell)

It does not specify the target's type in the ability description, but affected as by hold person could imply this ability only works on humanoids. Should it read "are affected as by a hold monster spell" or is the intent to only have it work on humanoids?

I'm rather late to the party, but how do you actually receive the .hl file? I've recently bought the pdf but the zip didn't include the .hl file, or is that no longer a thing?

The most current version of the Dragonrider is located in the Pathfinder 3PP Pack (a free community download) for HL. This pack requires the official HL licenses Advanced Players Guide, Ultimate Combat, and Ultimate Magic but it contains dozens of 3PP books including many SGG/RGG class, feats, and spells.

Follow the above link to the LW Forums where you can find full details on how to install.

Wow, thanks fella. Did you do all the compiling and whatnot yourself?
