Open PFS events question

How will the open PFS events work that only have 6 slots, but cover a large range of levels?

For example:
Friday 12-5 PM The Dalsine Affair
Maximum 6 attendees
Level 1-7 characters

I am assuming this sign-up is for one table of 6 players with 1 GM. Don't all 6 players need to have similar tiered characters?

I did not think a 1st level character could play up two tiers with 6th level characters, for instance, if that is who shows up for these 6 slots.

They can actually. You have to play in Tier, but Sub-Tier is completely flexible (technically). You probably wouldn't *want* to play it, but it's legal, and I have seen it done I think.

That's actually not the case Majuba. In this example, they'd have to agree to play tier 3-4.

Anyone playing a level 1 character must always play in a Tier 1–2 sub-Tier whenever possible. Rarely, PCs may be allowed to play “up” a Tier if they’re lower level than all of the other players.
For example, suppose you were GM for a full table with one level 1 PC and five level 4 PCs in a Tier 1–5 scenario. Normaly the level 1 PC couldn’t play up, but he can in this instance because it’s the only way for him to play.
Players who play up need to realize that it comes with significantly increased risks. A player can always refuse to play up when that’s his only option. A player may only ever play up one step—so a level 1 character can play up to sub-Tier 4–5, but cannot play up to sub-Tier 6–7—though these instances should be rare.

There are 3 sub-tiers in 1-7 - 1-2, 3-4, & 6-7.

The only way a level 6 could play with a level 1 is if the level 6 played down to sub-tier 3-4, and only even then if the average party level was in the sub-tier 3-4 range.

A Level 1 can "Never" play in sub-tier 6-7.

How does one sign up for the open events (ala the PFS mods)?

Is this something that is handled at the event itself?

The open events will be.. open, as of Monday, May 23rd, 2:00 PM PDT.

Thanks for the correction all! I think the one time it did come up (level 1's and 6/7's in the same group) it did go to mid-tier. Yet another great reason to have those 3-7 games!
