Kingmaker XP Problem?

I did a quick forum search for this, and couldn't find anything. I apologize if I missed a relevant post.

I just tallied up all the available xp left in the first adventure path, and I'm roughly 4,000 short, meaning that each of my characters will be about 1,000 xp away from level 4, which I thought they were to reach in the Stag Lord's fort.

Am I missing something? 100 xp for each hex, 400 xp for each quest? Are some quests worth more?

Thanks for the help

X amount of random encounters (or planned 'random' encounters) should help close the gap.

How did you get 4k short? I think quests + scripted encounters sum up to around 34800xp. Add in exploration and random encounters and you should get a party of four to lvl 4.

Yeah, you have to add in some random encounters. In total, I put in 8800 XP in "random" encounters and had a couple more encounters along the way, when the group decided to go and go back to Oleg's and the like. It seems when I finish up the module in the next two weeks, the group will be 1000 XP over the level four mark.

Note that the group should walk *out* of the Stag Lord's fort at Level 4...walking in at the upper end of Level 3 is reasonable.

This. They should definitely not be walking in at 4th level, and with a base 15% chance per hex exploration of having a random encounter and 5% per hex transition, you'll find the XP more than enough.

At this point it is probably too late, I'd recommend just bumping them up to 4th level as a end of book bonus, or give them some sort of mini adventure. I'm about to run kingmaker and I'm not sure if I'm going to give xp out or just grant levels like I'm used to do... Seems like it would be a bit harder to not use xp with the sandboxish style of the game.

We aren't using xp in our game. The GM levels us up at appropriate points in the game. We hit the Stag Lord a while after we hit level 3. We levelled up, and finished the book, after we beat him. We are now level 10 at the start of book 4 and the system has worked well.

I don't hand out XP for the game I am GM'ing. I use the rough guidelines in the book and approximate those depending on where the group is in the AP. It has worked out pretty well so far and we are just now going into the 4th book.

f I remember correctly (just finished running Kingmaker about 2 weeks ago) in the first adventure (and first one only) the hexes were worth 400 each, not 100 each. But even if thats not the case, just run a quick "random" encounter or two and you should be good.

Nah, James clarified long ago that every hex is 100 XP and those are split between party members.

Thanks everyone, for the help. We're about halfway through the book, I think. So, I'll be adding a little bit into the last session or two.

I'm thinking of just having a roaming crew of bandits attack, and possibly something else.

It should work alright.

Thanks, again, for all the help!

Watch Game of Thrones episode five to see what a good "roaming bandits" attack looks like. :p

I don't use XP per se in my game. I do keep a running total of the XP the group has earned, but I use it as a generally idea of where they should be. Mostly I look at where they are in the book and level them if they need it. The XP helps me to plan "random" encounters and events so that they earn those levels. If they are about to go against something that recommends them to be a level higher, but they are short a couple thousand XP as a group, I'll have them level anyway.

I generally keep track of the experience for the party and let them know when they level up. Otherwise you run into the "we only need 100 xp to next level, lets go kill some weenies and then come back and level up." syndrome.

Also if you keep finding your party running short, you can probably put them on fast tract xp.
