A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity - Pathfinder Core Rules Conversion (Working Thread)

Hey there; I'm going to go ahead and start a conversion of "A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity" (Cook, David. TSR, 1980). As with other conversions I've attempted, there will be some license (e.g. not a purely "straight" conversion).

Here is the current file -> A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity [careful, its a little big]

Spoiler:

OK, so I couldn't help myself, Eric T. mentioned this one and so I had to do it. I reviewed Labyrinth of Madness and the Bloodstone series. I need to finish "Paladin" before I even think about tackling those. Plus, the Slaver series always seemed like a great story but, given their initial design, had issues and limitations. That said, they also have great sentimental value. So - I will attempt to do them justice without mucking them up too badly.

A1-4 Scourge of the Slavelords and "Slavers" (by the great SKR and Mr. Pramas) are clear sources of inspiration if not direct borrowing. The "Scourge" adventure will help when tying them together but it does go a little to far afield for a direct conversion. I hope that is OK.

As always, I hope this conversion will bring a bit of a smile for those of us that still remember nervously scuttling down its hallways (those darn aspis and their multiple blades!).

Once I get it in shape, please give me any feedback/edits/recommendations - I hope this will live on for a little while in folks "download queue". I am thinking of converting all of the Slave Lords series but we'll see.

I continue to work on Paladin - I'm doing roughly one day on, one day off (of course this happens mostly on weekends. One must crank away at "real work" after all.).

Enjoy.

I will take a look....

I appreciate anyones hard work whether I use it or not....

Looks good!

Definitely would like to see Paladin in Hell get finished. That said you’ve whipped this up pretty quickly. I like that places of interest on the map have their location names highlighted in red. Also your numbering for the old temple map is a striking look. The list of Paizo products on the back page is a longer than I currently have for G3 – you’ve inspired me to add a couple. :)

P.S. There is a higher quality image of the TSR Wizard Logo online which you can find easily if interested.

I am literally jumping for joy right now! This was by far and away my favorite series to run in my AD&D days, and I had been thinking about converting it for the last year. Thank you for this. I'm sure it's awesome.

Do you have plans to do the other four?

[Edit] Er...I suppose I could have read the spoiler and answered my question myself...

So, yay! I will weigh in with my own ideas from when I used to run them if I get the chance.

Wow, this should be good. This was one of my favorite series of modules and I would love to see what you can do to update the content with the rules.

Looking at it right now, not only do you have an eye for the style/feel of original game (as usual), you take these whole projects on with a great attitude and sense of humor, bravo!

(I lol'd hard at the back cover - good stuff)

Very well done. Like the whole retro thing.

This is fantastic, I hope to run it tonight, as a side trek from Council of Thieves (players are mightily motivated to end slavery in Westcrown)

Thanks.

Any interest in feedback?

Looks nice, look forward to seeing if you do the rest!

Ok, it'll be a few weeks. The players had the choice of following the red herring to the Shackles for an attack on the Undercity and hopefully getting all of their gear back, or trying out for the play as requested by the pathfinder society.

They, to my surprise, opted for the play first. Post-play, I'm sure that they'll head back.

Dear god. Thank you so much for this!

I'm going to run this over summer!

You are a stellar human being, and thank you!

HOLY CRAP. Thanks for this!

Hey - Thanks for the comments. I posted an update (rough) this evening.

Let me know what you think and how to make it better (and yes I'm always interested in feedback, suggestions, etc. This is for you folks after all!).

I continue to "slave" away at Paladin, and probably need to take one more look at Lizard King before Paizocon, so updates will be coming for those.

Will probably change the "kenku" encounter and the artwork for the guards to match what I'm using for the other half-orcs.

Anyway, wanted to give you an update before Sunday.

Enjoy,

~D

Level 1, The Old Temple, is complete (still need to error check, but it's updated with a few minor fixes since Friday). Enjoy. ~D

Made a few updates - included a shot at the aspis drones - I may need to do all three (grubs, drones, and queen) to make sure they make sense together. Took a crack at some of the rooms which were surprisingly complicated given the age of the module - I'm constantly reminded how good these guys are.

this is awesome work , great to see some old school conversions to pathfinder -as someone who runs a 1e campaign with a bunch of 30 - 40 somethings this is my idea of heaven :)
I want to switch our group across to an updated ruleset but dont want to shock then too much - this could be just the ticket
hope they keep coming!
cheers :)

As usual, daemonslye hits one right out of the park!

I would love to see a full Aspis stat write-up, less because I'm a lazy bastard - more because you do such a good job in repackaging this classic material with such clever and superb presentation.

Hey Daemonslye i just wanted to say good work as always, though i wonder were you find all of your artwork, love a lot of the pieces you use to enhance the adventure.

None the less amazing job with the conversion, top quality work as always.

This is awesome work!

Gosh, I loved the Aspis. Then the Thri-Kreen (which always felt like Phraint knockoffs, to me) came along and everybody seemed to forget them. Nice to see the original bug-dudes back!

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

This is superb! I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Yay, aspis!

EDIT: WOW. Daemonslye, I think I Love you /guitar/.

Hey, I wanted to say thanks for all the comments. Knowing that you folks enjoy these conversions keeps me working on them.

I have updated Slave Pits with some more content (found in the link above).

The aspis were also one of my favorites, despite my characters getting killed by them (two freaking swords was darn hurtful in 1E).

I'm still trying to judge where the adventure will sit CR-wise. Right now, its a little high but I'd like to shoot for six fourth or fifth level characters. There is a big click-over power-wise at fifth level, so this may need some play-testing.

Where do I get the artwork? Well, the Internet mainly. I dedicate Slave Pits to A. Smith whose awesome work I have borrowed to make the conversion come alive.

I'll get back to Paladin in Hell in a week or so, I have more of the Temple finished, but it's rough and I need to work on it before it's ready.

Thanks for this Daemonslye, I can say that a bunch of us on these boards do appreciate the work you put into these projects.

Just wanted to add my thanks for your hard work on this, Daemonslye.I very much hope we can give this a bash in our group.Expecy you've already been deluged with requests for a converted "Village of Hommlet": allow me to add my own!

Thanks so much for all your work on many different conversions. My players will definitely be seeing this one. Your work is much appreciated by this old-time DM.

Ok, party is FINALLY going to finish up on Monday. I want to say thank you. You have made it possible t bring in that old school fee that we remember from back in the day.

Adventure was a great time, very similar in feel to the original, and the new art was tremendously good. We will be using some of the characters as recurring NPCs

My only 'issue' is that many of the original 1st edition ideas are still present, like ridiculous numbers of wandering monsters. So, be advised this is a very faithful conversion, and you get the original everything brought over to Pathfinder. For some, this is a selling point I'm sure.

Our group cut back, and you can very easily have fewer wandering monsters. Great fun.

Hey, that's great! I have been banging away on The Lost City and will take the comments into account. I remember, way back when, many an adventure got sidetracked with random encounters (aka "wandering monsters"). I'll try to make sure I tone down the frequency and CR level of them (in B4). As it stands, I am going through re-evaluating encounters because the PCs will need to sleep every three rooms or so. I'm really happy you were able to make it through!

Let me know if there was anything egregiously off base and I can correct it in the master copy for others.

Thanks,

~D

Any chance of A-2 in the near future?

It's not a problem, it's old school design.

All you need to do is put a box in saying " here's how adventure design has changed in the last 30 years" and let groups sort it for themselves.

Daemonslye,

First of all, thank you for the hard work. I'm enjoying going through it.

Do you have a link for the orc artwork? It's a fresh perspective and I'd like to enjoy more of it and the artist if I can.

Lol @ Arengrey: I know, right? I think I'm actually more excited for The Lost City conversion (and then Paladin In Hell) than I am for this month's Paizo shipment!

Thanks Daemonlye. I'm building up quite a collection :)

There appears to be no link for that file now....has it been removed?

I'd love the whole expanded Queen of Spiders campaign arch done up like this.
Though I suppose the level ranges would have to be tweed a bit.

Is this file still available? If so, please let me know how I can get it.

I am going to run a Pathfinder session for my kids and some others, and wanted to start with this adventure.

Please help, running it fairly soon.

Cheers

Looks good!

The version I have of this was only 14 pages long, did anyone happen to get the full conversion?
