Any creative uses for Lingering Spell metamagic?

Advice

I'm wondering if anyone has thought of a creative use for the metamagic feat Lingering Spell (other than slapping it on Fireball, Lightning Bolt, etc.).

For instance, I had the idea that if you could find some kind of buffing spell, you could have a whole bunch of people run through the "cloud" and get a benefit. But the snag is that the spell has to be "an instantaneous spell that affects an area"; I couldn't find anything that matched that description in the Core Rulebook other than the usual suspects (e.g. Fireball).

Can anyone smarter than me come up with a cool idea? :-)

That's tough, but here are some ideas:

A horde is charging you. Cast Lingering Waves of Fatigue as they approach. Cause a backlog attackers who suddenly can't charge on their turn as they enter the spell area.

A Lingering Transmute Metal to Wood could similarly make a transmutation area for a round that you could load extra things into.

Lingering Waves of Fatigue would be okay, but not very creative.

I'm trying to think of a reason why I'd want to turn a huge mass of metal into wood, though...

Dispel Magic?

Transmute Mud to Rock + World Wave = How many d6s is 180 square feet of stone crashing into some one?

I'm not sure what the usual suspects are but. . .

Hydraulic Torrent seems like a good choice. It can create an effective wall-like spell for one round. . .

Neither of those has instantaneous duration.

I didn't think about Dispel Magic. Possibly interesting, but still not terribly beneficial. Maybe if you had a bunch of people suffering from an unwanted spell, but how likely is that?

I've surrounded my PCs in a circular wall of fire, heat emanating inwards. I then pelted them with lingering fireballs from my flying sorcerer.

If they tried to leave the "oven" then the sorcerer's fighter minions would bull rush them back into the fire (using aid another as needed).

So they took 10d6 from the fireball, 2d4 from the radiating wall, 1d6+10 from going through the wall of fire when they tried to escape, another 1d6+10 when they were bull rushed back through the wall, and another 10d6 when they landed back in the lingering fireball. They also took some damage from minions who had readied actions to throw spears at them as they came out.

Three or four rounds of 22d6+2d4+20 damage each round and they were feeling extremely beat up. If it wasn't for the invisible flying sorcerer taking out the enemy sorcerer and the sheer amount of healing in the group, they surely would have died.

Druid vs. hidden skirmishers. Druid drops Lingering Transmute Metal to Wood, centered on herself. Over the next round as skirmishers charge, their weapons start sucking. Or, metal arrowheads change in flight over the next round. No need to time the spell for when you hit the skirmishers, it just happens.

Any creature with a silver/cold iron/adamantium vulnerability would also like this.

When the opposing side has had several rounds to buff up?

This let´s one round´s action strip off buffs of multiple enemies, and even can strip off a buff that they decide to re-cast, without needing further action from you. Maybe it´s niche, but could be a good use of free Metamagic, also good for boosting action economy of BBEG Casters without that many mooks/allies on their side.

Magical decontamination clinic?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A lingering dispel could be used for area denial against someone using magical flight - if they fly into the lingering dispel, they fall.

If you can use Lingering with Mass Cure spells, you could use them to create "happy places" for your party to stand in, especially if they're fighting undead.

I can't think of too many other interesting uses of it though. It does seem to basically be a way of adding CC/area denial to basic evocations, assuming the enemy cares enough to avoid a second round's damage - at 10d6 save for half, avg 35/17.5, a lot of enemies may well choose to take a second hit rather than sacrifice a good position. And there's more and better ways of providing area denial without having to use a feat on it. If you want a feat to add CC to your evocations, Dazing Spell is probably it.

A postscript to a thread that nobody cares about:

I finally (using the spell database at d20pfsrd.com) found a couple of buffing-style spells that affect an area and have a duration of instantaneous -- Reviving Finale (terminate bardic performance to heal 2d6 damage within a 20' burst) and Joyful Rapture (heal 1d4 Int, Wis or Cha damage + harmful emotion effects within a 60' burst). Not terribly exciting, I realise.

My favorite is lingering lightning arc, pick two spread out foes in front, deal huge damage to both, and create a devestatingly powerfull lightning wall between them.

lingering telecinesis...Any object entering the area are subject to its effects

I'm 100% going to necro this to put my two-cents in: Color Spray. Concealment, and hopefully a barrier to stop anyone from approaching.
