Magic Knack + Paladins / Rangers

Rules Questions

Magical Knack increases a characters CL in a class so long as CL isn't greater than HD.

A Paladin or Ranger has no caster level until level 4, at which point they get a CL of LVL-3.

So the question becomes, does Magical Knack work on a single classed Paladin or Ranger, effectively making their CL = LVL-1?

I would think that it does, but I'd like to hear your guys opinions on the matter.

I would allow it. A Paladin or Ranger with a higher caster level isn't really gaining that much, especially with the small number of spells per day they receive, so I don't think it's really overpowered.

I would say yes, hmmm good use of the trait other than to multi-classing.

Well ain't that a neat little trick? I'll keep that in mind. xP

Where's the RAW saying that Rangers and Paladin's have a lower CL just because they are 4th lvl casters? I've never been aware of this?

At the end of the 'Spells' class feature:

"Through 3rd level, a paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, her caster level is equal to her paladin level – 3."

I allow it. The trait does not specify multiclassing, nor that it does not work on single class characters. There is no reason it should not work. If you want a more competent casting paladin/ranger, that's a fine way to get there. Last time I used that trait was with a Dragon Disciple to get my caster level up to par. Next paladin I make is going to have it as well.

Yep - this is totally legal.

Kamelguru stated it quite accurately. It's perfectly legal to use it this way. The only thing I would add is that it only works starting at 4th level, i.e. levels 1-3 you do not have a caster level, but at level 4 you have caster level 3 (1 from class, +2 from trait).

Yes, but the character has to have a caster level for the trait to work, so the Paladin or Ranger can start with the trait, but they won't be casting any spells before level 4 no matter what.

A fourth level pally is a fourth level caster even if he only got spells starting yesterday. The only way Magical Knack would be effective is if you multi-class.

Incorrect according to this online source: "Through 3rd level, a paladin has no caster level. At 4th level and higher, her caster level is equal to her paladin level – 3."

So it would make sense for a paladin to use it; in fact, one of my characters uses it that way ;-)

This distinction isn't really important. Caster Level only makes spells more effective, it doesn't grant you more spells known or more spell slots. So a Paladin without any spells from levels 1-3 doesn't see any benefit even if he has a Caster Level of 2. A Paladin only sees the benefit at 4th level when he gains the spells.

You are right there, I just added it for completeness' sake. I have had questions in the past about a similar thing (feat in 3.5, gave 2x the trait) if it allowed you to start spellcasting earlier; that's why I mentioned it. :-)

Thread resurrection.

A 7th level sorcerer (straight sorcerer) can is only a 3rd level caster in that he can cast 3rd level spells, correct? His HD is 7 so Magical Knack would work on this class?

Or has my DM been wrong for all these years?

No, that sorcerer's caster level is 7, same as his class level.

Your DM has been wrong all these years.

"A spell's power often depends on its caster level, which for most spellcasting characters is equal to her class level in the class she's using to cast the spell."

WOWSER, this is a rather large error! Do you have anyone playing casters? It seems they would be SOOOO weak. Nearly every class caster level = character level. Ranger and Paladins are the exception (for now) and their caster level is level-3.

Nuts.

Yikes, spell level is entirely different from caster level.

I winced when I read this.

Urk... I threw up in my mouth a little. A lvl 7 Sorc is CL7. A Sorc 3/Fighter 4 is CL3. A Sorc 4/Bard 5 is CL4 for Sorc spells and CL5 for Bard spells. That's one thing. Now, for something completely different. Spell levels. A Sorc1 (CL1) can cast up to lvl 1 spells. A Sorc4 (CL4) can cast up to lvl 2 spells. A Sorc6(CL 6) can cast up to lvl 3 spells. If your lvl 3 spell says it deals 2d6 damage plus 1d6 per two caster levels, then a Sorc6 gets it right out the door at 5d6 damage and it goes up by 1d6 for every 2 sorc levels he takes thereafter. So Spell Level, Caster Level, Class Level, and Character Level are four totally separate and distinct things that, sometimes, interrelate but must never be conflated.
