Revised Gunslinger v.2.3.0 with Archetypes

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 2

Yes, I know we're all waiting with bated breath to see what the Devs do with the gunslinger, whether they'll do a round 3 or not, who knows. Anyway, I've posted my newest version The Gunslinger v.2.3.0 pdf, if anyone is interested.

I kept is somewhat close to the Playtest 2 document, with some level switch arounds, a few additions, etc. I replaced the Bravery with a similar AC bonus mechanic to the Monk, and took all the "shot" deeds (dead shot, utility shot, etc.) and made them straight class abilities without grit costs. I also created a number of archetypes of this version also (buccaneer, calvary gunman, dragoon, frontiersman, marksman, and pistoleer). I think its fairly balanced, but some playtested opinions would be good.

So, check it out, or don't - whatever.

I am interested in looking but my computer doesn't like your host site. It insists bad things live there

hah, I was messing around and thinking of possible archtypes and also throught of the calvary and dragoon. Then I thought those would be better as cavalier archtypes in some way too. haven't looked at your pdf, at work and I don't dare do any downloads.

Being that my other pdfs on my mediafire account have been downloaded 500+ times each and never heard a complaint, I'd ignore your warning.

try this

Elghinn Lightbringer Mediafire

Otherwise, I'll just post it with spoilers. It's in the Gunslinger folder, v.2.3.0.

The link redirects to Mediafires front page. Try reuploading.
And the second one redirects to Paizo store.

??? I reuploaded the file, and it still goes right into the folder with the gunslinger pdfs. ???

As for the second one, I fixed that, takes you to the page in mediafire with my folders. So give them a try again.

hah...bad things live there....

so there are goblins at light bringers web page? where's my +3 dagger when i need it?

can't wait to see what you did to the Gunslinger class expesially the cavalry gunman and the marksman.

Have you thought of using Megaupload?

I think jabberwocks rank above "bad things live here"

Now it works :)
Pretty awesome. I especially like the Pistoleer and Marksman archetypes.

Thanks, VM. I did a lot of back and forth, trying to find the rightg balance that wouldn't be too far from the Devs version, but would take care of some of the issues people were having with various aspects of the class, reloading, grit, etc. There is still room for more deeds obviously.

My main concern was penalizing a gunslinger by charging them grit points to maintain or perform "shots" they should be able to do without it costing grit. Other deeds sure, but not gun related. THe archetypes and some of the "shots" take care of the feat tax issue, such as for two-weapon fighting, critical feats, etc. If they want to use their available slots to do so, they still can of course, but it allows them to use other feats to improve the class instead of making it so they can use their firearms better.

Any other comments, suggestions? I know it's been downloaded at least 27 times.

Of course, I still want to see where the Devs go with the class.

I dont get the monk armor class bonus at all with this? He gets armor and monk bonus? or did I misread this

Personally this build wont be allowed in any games I will be running If I understood correctly my first complaint. I am not so bothered by other class features you put it in but I certainly disagree with the idea that it is a feat starved class(are they all starved but the fighter?) and the gun crafting section I am not a fan of.

The idea behind the monk AC is that as a FRONTLINE warrior type, he needs something more than just his light armor to protect him, whether its bonuses due to agility or some other thing. I used the monk mechanic because it was there and fit, and i couldn't think of anything better at the time. However, I did see on another thread somethings that gave me an idea. Maybe just adding her Wis to AC or being able to double her Dex bonus in some fashion (luck or maintaing grit?).

As for the guncrafting, if you don't like it, don't use it. The way I see it is the gunslinger is a designer/engineer/tester/improver/expert of firearms. I don't see why the class cannot have a feature to improve her firearms (and hers alone). I know the paladin has a similar idea, as does the wizard with the divine and arcane bond class features. I followed the arcane bond path, allowing the gunslinger to enhancing her firearms herself through improved design and engineering, by putting in the construction cost and time. This is no different than someone with the Master Craftsman feat, or the Craft Magical Weapons and Armor feat, but what she does is not magical in nature.

Well, since I posted it, the 2.3.0 version has been downloaded 100 times. Great! Hope you guys like it. I think it's pretty balanced.

Not to sound nitpicky, but why is the gunslinger considered a frontliner, exactly? I mean, he's a ranged combatant first and foremost, right? Shouldn't he actually be avoiding the frontlines?

Also, purely for conversation purposes, going by this logic, Fighters should always be master weaponsmiths, right? Weaponry is kind of their thing. They even have Weapon Training 1-5, and Greater Specialization, so shouldn't, by this logic, Fighters have a system of empowering their weapons beyond normal standards? I don't mean Master Craftsman, because anyone can do that.

Should not Fighters have the ability to turn their masterwork longswords into a bonded lightning loaded lucky murcurial chainsword (that's a longsword with a chainsaw for a blade), 'cause they're pretty heavy specialized in that longsword. :P

Just askin'. ☺

I have to agree with Ash on both of these aspects. The Gunslinger has never come across as a front-line warrior to me. Guns ARE ranged weapons for a reason in my opinion.

Ash also brings up the point of the improvements. While I like the idea of being able to upgrade my gun into a cannon of destruction, I'd also like that choice with other classes I play, so I see where Ashiel's logic comes into play as well.

I like the build so far, however, and look forward to seeing what all you do with it.
