Kobold Catgirl |
The old dwarf dogcatcher stands before you, his expression grim. In the little miner's town of Dust, he's the closest thing they have to a sheriff. He's known as “Grandpa Erled', a nickname he despises but can do nothing about.
“I'm at my wit's end,” he growls. “The little devils butchered the family, an' we only learned of it yesterday. An' that was by chance. The mailman, he needed somethin' signed. He opened the door an' nearly got his head taken clean off by a spear trap. He heard yappin' from below as he ran.” Grandpa Erled walks behind his desk and sits down in a faded blue armchair. “Kobolds. No doubt about it. An' prob'by makin' a maze of tunnels even as we speak. They're quick critters.”
He opens a drawer and pulls out a bottle of some sort of green liquid. He takes a swig. “You gotta get rid of 'em. Them critters, they've got some sort of smell. My dogs can't stand it. An' if we wait long enough for help from Magnimar to get here, they'll have turned the place into a meat grinder. They're clever, and when it comes to traps an' tunneling, they're the quickest little devils in the world. They prob'by already got somethin' up.”
He takes another, much smaller sip. “I've got the house cleared out. Other than the spear, the kobolds didn't put much up. Which makes me more worried 'bout what you'll find in what used to be the family's cellar.
He stands up, leaning on the desk shakily. “So, will y' take the job?”
You're in the office of the dogcatcher. What you're doing there is up to you. The gist of it is, obviously, that you're being offered a job.

"Might be tha I am interested in these kobold creatures you speak of perchance you can offer something for my trouble."
"Well, I don't have much. But kobolds, the little devils aughta have a fair bit. Tell y' what. Pull it off an' y' can keep what's found."

"So... these, Kobolds, they've taken residence bellow your lowly town, and an entrance to their place is through a cellar of a butchered family, and you wish for them dead, right? how much do you whant them to suffer before their last breath?... oh and i expect payment in gems, gold is no use to me" says the flame covered skeleton in an elegant and soothing voice

The dwarf frowns. "Ye', I'm sure y'll find what yer after down there. The devils're miners, after all.
"An' just kill 'em. Foolin' around can't go well wit' Darkland critters."Raviel Vangua |
looking at the woodling, "Oh, I'm sure we will get along just fine, my name is Raviel Vangua and yours?" says the skeleton with only a small hint of sarcasm and malevolance in his voice as he streaches out a hand towards the woodling for a handshake

"No thanks I do not think it would be useful for either of us..."
Sjurd |
You feel slow, rhythmic thumping start in the floorboards. It grows in volume and proximity, accompanied by the squeals of the timid along the dusty street. It stops just outside Erled's office, as a bushy red beard and eyes the size of teacup saucers peer through the window. "Um, excuse me. Is this the dogcatcher's office? I saw the posting. The name is Sjurd. I'm a Jotunbrud. I'm available for gainful employment. I... well I can't really fit inside, but please don't take that as a lack of interest. I am definitely, definitely interested." The eyes peer around the room, "Are you blokes looking for work, too?"
Kobold Catgirl |
The dwarf waves a hand. "Yes, yes, I'll send a man to take you there. Just get out of my sight."
You are led by a sickly-looking dwarf to a fairly nondescript building. Indeed, the only thing interesting about it is the fact that there are two great mastiffs sitting attentively on either side of the open doorway.
The dwarf takes you inside, leading you through a bloody kitchen to a trapdoor. "We've cleared out the house," he mutters. "The cellar is a different matter. Whatever they've made of it, we've left it for you."
He glances towards Sjurd (who is forced to crawl very low even in the large building. If he's not willing to do so, he can lookin through a window). "Kobolds like spacious caverns, like their home. Once you're down there, you shouldn't have much trouble.
Sjurd |
Grunting slightly and scrunching his eyebrows, Sjurd suddenly collapses in size and shrinks from 20 feet to 10 feet tall. "There we are! Now it won't be so hard to fit through the darn door. I can go back to my regular size once we're in the cavern."
Hefting his mighty flail, Killbastard, over his shoulder, Sjurd walks into the home.
Raviel Vangua |
"Comrades there are Kobolds waiting for us to rip them limb from limb, to feast on the still beating hearts of their loved ones before their very eyes before finally putting them out of the misery... I mean, can we get going?"
Kobold Catgirl |
"Ah, under the dirt, the only place I feel at home pardners" Tizzird says as he examines the darkness beyond the trap door letting his darkvision pick out the details.
Tizzird sees that the ladder goes a ways down, perhaps thirty feet. It looks like it leads into a large chamber, but he can't make out much of it from his vantage point.
Kobold Catgirl |
Raviel drops the flaming curtain down the trap door and starts walking down the ladder
The flaming curtain falls, lighting up a bare room. It probably used to be the cellar, but the kobolds have cleared it out completely. As Raviel follows the cloth, he sees that the room isn't quite empty. Between him and the door are three horrific guardians.
These creatures resemble giant-sized moths, with long, beautiful wings covered in rippling patterns resembling skulls. Their heads are rather centipede-like, and long tentacles surround their fanged mouths.
As stated, there are three of these things. They're large sized, and seem about to attack. Roll initiative.
Should I make a map?

map may help
initiative 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Raviel will ready an attack on the first moth-thing that gets within striking distance, moving just far away enough from the ladder to allow the others to go down it

"Perhaps we assume these creature work with the kobolds perhaps they have been displaced by the kobolds."
(addresses the creatures)
"We are looking for kobolds you are not kobolds let us pass and find a new home."
