Here is the character I will apply with.

Rogue (eventually burger archetype) who used to work with the professor in tracking down 'miss-placed' objects. He has On the payroll as a trait.

Appearance:

This man is in his mid to late thirties, stands at six feet tall and has a thin build. He has dark brown with grey flecks, well cut hair and deep blue eyes with a clean, pale complexion. The man is usually dressed in a white tunic, brown leather breaches and a heavy blue and black overcoat. If the coat is open, two things are immediately visible: one, two crossed bandoliers full of throwing knives; and two, a sliver flask contained in an inside pocket.

Personality:

How to describe Giles? He’s the kind of man that a woman would love but a father or husband would hate. Giles is defiantly a ladies man, or least he was before he began a self-destructive journey after the failures of his last two novels. He still maintains his charm and wit, or, at least he believes so; others opinions may vary, usually directly related to the amount of whiskey he’s had that day.

Background:

“Poet? Playwright? Author?” The man waved his hands in a dismissing manner. “Hardly; at least not any more.” Giles sat at one of the local bars within the city of Lepidstadt reading the over the latest issue of the Daily Lepidstadtian. “Can you believe they have the nerve to write that, of me, Harold, of me! Rubbish!” Along with the copy of the paper, the rogue held a near empty mug of Chelaxian whiskey, his poison of choice.

The bartender, possibly named Harold (the man’s inebriated state left one to wonder), stared at the drunkard while wiping clean a set of ale mugs. “They’ll like the next one better.”

Despite ‘Harold’s’ words of encouragement, Giles knew they were hollow. He knew it himself, he just didn’t want to admit it, but he was done. His first novel, titled A Sheep in Wolves’ Clothing, had received rave reviews and even one critic claimed it to be the defining novel of the last 50 years. Associated with all that success were the distractions: devil weed, streetwalkers and, of course, the whiskey.

Without even having to ask, Harold topped up the nearly empty mug of whiskey. “Maybe you should write about dogs, everyone likes dogs.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Giles drifted back into his own thoughts for the moment. Truth be told, he was out of ideas. The first novel basically took all his life experiences and the drug and alcohol fueled second and third left him to just write about just that, which hardly excited critics. He reached into the inner pocket of his tunic and produced a silvered flask. “I’m going to take this one to go, Harold. In a bit of a rush, you see. I’ll get you next time.” Before the bartender could protest, Giles had emptied the glass into the flask and rushed out of the Inn.

It was rather strange for Giles to be so depressed about his writing, he was after all, a rather accomplished 'obtainer of objects far and wide' or better known to the masses as a thief. He took up writing in the beginning in order to explain the money which funded his 'larger than life' lifestyle but to his surprise he was actually quite good at it.

Most of Giles' work came through an old professor from the University of Lepidstadt, Petros Lorrimor. The professor used to use Giles for collecting object or information he wished to study but he hadn't heard from him in quite some time. As the professor was his only contact to the university, the work dried up after they lost contact so Giles began to concentrate more on his writing.

Truth be told, Giles was near penniless. He needed that book to do well and it bombed. Sitting on a city bench, he glanced down at the paper again and something caught his eye -- an article on Petros Lorrimor who had just recently passed away. Although it was going to be a long-shot, he set off for Ravengro. Maybe one of the professor's associates would remember him.

Wonderful! Vaghn is just the sort of person who would think it was a good idea to try to go live amongst the goblins in order to better study them, a la Gorillas in the Mist. Good thing for him he never got around to it! :P Seriously though, Knowledge (local) would cover humanoids and that is one I did not invest in. Maybe a local goblin tribe was in some way connected to a magical anomaly at some point though...

Alternatively, I would happy to have Vaghn have continued Gumz' education where P. Lorrimar left off, with or without the University's permission. Everyone deserves a proper education!

Hmm... perhaps I should change one of his languages to Goblin...

Anyhow, off to class!

Those are your choices then? should the rest of us still be trying to get into the game?

Giving such precise instruction to specific concepts makes it seems like you've already made your decision. That's fine, but it'd be nice to know if that's the case. Some of us spend a lot of time when fleshing out a character.

While I am leaning in that direction, I haven't settled on anything just yet. Giles, for instance, has definitely piqued my interest!! I'm also waiting on more feedback from my players.

If I had three to choose, I'd grab Gumz, Giles, and Vaghn der Grafft and run with it. But like I said, I'm keeping everything open until Friday.

Had a random idea. Assuming I am chosen (fingers crossed, no chickens counted here!) would it be possible if Vaghn knew the Professor's daughter, Kendra? Not necessarily well, but I think it would be great if they had previously met and he had a hopeless (and likely unrequited) crush on her...

Hmmm... An interesting idea.

Given potential problems with Gumz, perhaps you should open up that spot. Trying to get a Chaotic Neutral Goblin with an ego as disproportionate as his head to function well with the early scenarios of the AP might not work. I somehow don't see townsfolk trusting a Goblin as far as they could throw him. Gumz was mostly a crack idea until I realized what his Stealth mod would end up as. Giles seems more appropriate.

I'm pretty open to modifying Giles' background slightly to know someone else if that is what you're wishing. I tend to leave gaps in my characters background for this very reason.

Well, it's Wednesday. Unless a few new people roll in and knock off my socks, Giles and Vaghn will likely have it!

Well since the I didnt get into the other game, I would like to throw my Half Orc Summoner into the mix. This be he.

Background/History:

Growing up as a half orc is hard enough, but when you are abandoned as a child in the wilds it can be downright deadly. That is what happened to poor Terrick. Luckily for Terrick he was found by a wandering human ranger within a day of his...disposal. The ranger, named Harkin, had pity on the poor mewling babe, who looked more human then orcish, and took him under his wing. Travelling the world, Terrick grew up surrounded by animals and the wilderness, occasionally going into towns to shop. His dark green skin and small fang betrayed his orcish heritage however, and he had no friends beyond animals.

One day, however, during his 7th year of life, Terrick had an event that changed things dramatically for him. One night while his father was setting up camp Terrick drew in the dirt. By chance, he drew an arcane symbol which, thanks to his latent and untapped abilies, called out into the ether. Within a few moments a small spirit appeared in front of him, startling him and his father equally. The creature then spoke directly into the mind of Terrick, and asked why he had summoned it. Terrick, being young and lonely quickly answered that he wanted a friend. Harkin stared at the events in front of him and took a step towards the pair. Before he could reach them though the spirit become a small dog like creature, and Terrick quickly squeled with childish joy and grabbed the creature up. Harkin decided then and there to take his son into nearby Oppara to visit a local gnomish mage he knew by the name of Beron. The creature, which still looked like a dog, had deep green fur and red eyes, and only 3 toes on each limb.

Once they arrived in Oppara, Terrick was quickly ushured, along with his new friend who he had dubbed Nessen, to visit Beron. Beron took one look at Nessen and cocked an eyebrow, and Harkin quickly explained what had happened.

Beron smiled and spent a few moments puttering around the pair before turning to Harkin and explaining that Terrick had latent arcane powers, and those powers had summoned a companion for him. Terrick was a natural summoner. Harkin asked what they could do, and Beron suggested that he could teach the boy.

Over the next few years Terrick spent his time with Beron, learning the ways of the summoner. Beron found that the lad was quick of mind, if a bit absent minded and prone to doing things that defied common sense. The creature Nessen helped as best it could to curb this instances. Harkin came frequently to visit his foster son, and was proud as the young boy mastered his powers and Nessen evolved.

After 10 years of training, Terrick left Beron to begin to hone his skills in the real world. Nessen had evolved to the point where it walked on 2 legs, and was a terrifying beast to everyone but Terrick. To the half orc, Nessen will always be a little puppy.

Appearence:

Corse black hair covers Terricks head, and his features are mostly human looking save for 2 small fangs on his lower jaw, and his deep emerald skin. His blue eyes shine with happiness and he almost always has a smile on his face.

Motivation:

Terrick searches the world with Nesser for obscure planar lore, hoping to find new ways to summon creatures and befriend them. He also tries to make friends in every town he goes to, hoping that in some way he can help people with their issues

"Here you are lad. Check the, erm, winesinks first, if you will. Inns, taverns, and so forth. Then look for figures passed out in alleyways. There's a good lad!"

The letter reads as follows:

Herr De Savorie,

You may not remember me, but I remember you. You were a frequent associate of Professor P. Lorrimor of Lepidstadt University. I was his student and friend. It saddens me to inform you that this esteemed and wonderful man recently passed away. Before he died, as was often his wont, he was off on the scent of some great new discovery, but being very secretive about it. Furthermore, the circumstances of his death remain unclear. Therefore I propose to honor this great man by discovering the subject of his last, unfinished work, and finishing it in his name! For such an endeavor I may require someone of your particular talents, and so I write to inquire as to your availability. I do not possess the sort of resources our dear departed professor did, but I am sure we might come to a suitable arrangement.

In any case, I leave in three days time for the village of Ravengro where he is being put to rest so that I might pay my respects to him and his family, and perhaps lay hands on a journal or some such that may detail his final months and give me insight into what new wonder he was working on. If you wish to join me in this journey please send word to Lepidstadt University before that time.

Regards,

Vaghn der Grafft, esq.

Giles wasn't sure if he remembered this man or not. Clearly he remembered him. At any rate, it was clear that staying in Lepidstadt much longer may not be the best idea with his mounting bar tab. This man sounded like he was going to pay and if not him then maybe one of the professor's associates. Next stop, Ravengro...

Giles and der Grafft are in. Please move over to the character thread here and look for the post titled side thread. You two will post in response to this until I merge you with the current group.

Dark Archive

After two players dropped..... my group has requested we open the recruiting thread again! So, if you're interested in getting in on a Carrion Crown PbP (they're still first level) and you'll actually post, please submit a character.

Character submission will be reviewed by current group.

We're looking to fill 1-2 slots. The best will fill the slot(s).

Rogues will be given a little preference.

20-point buy.

Recruiting is open from: Now until June 9th.

The group currently has: A noble summoner, a young paladin, a very paranoid inquisitor, and a scholarly bard. You can read more about them here (IC thread). Please review the thread to get a feel for the other players, their styles, and the general feel of the game up to date.

Notice: People that create amazing characters, get selected, and then never post will be drug out back, fed horse tranquilizers, and shot. Just saying....

Alright, I'm definitely interested in this (especially since Jormugandr dropped all his other games about a week after he kicked you guys to the curb). I have a few concepts swimming around in my noggin, and as soon as I fish one out that seems to suit Carrion Crown, I'll toss it up there. It looks like you might benefit from a few heavy hitters in melee, but that's just at a casual glance. Which part of the adventure are you at? I get the impression form recent conversations that fishy things have begun to happen around town, but the party is only beginning to investigate and hasn't gone near Harrowstone yet?

As far as posting goes, I'm on GMT+8 right now, but I tend to be pretty active, and I've been subsisting on about 6 hours of sleep lately, so for those stateside I'll be on in the early morning, late evening, and the early afternoon as long as I'm not working early the next day. I can commit to at least a post or two every day, and when the thread is active, probably far, far more

martinaj wrote:

PArty consists of

Melee/Intimidatin Inquisitor
Paladin
Bard with ye olde whip
Summoner going into bard.

Think we have melee pretty covered.

Another question, if I may. As the campaign has already begun, and I presume the funeral is over, do you still prefer new PCs to possess a link to Lorimer? If not, is that still an option (could someone have been delayed en route to his funeral, for example?)

I'm doing my best to think up a cool rogue, but fight it as I might, I keep drifting towards a druid with the menhir archtype from UM. I want to give Rule of Fear a quick read-over before I really hammer out anything solid, though.

Dark Archive

My preference from a party balance perspective would be a rogue and a full-casting progression divine character (cleric would be best, but oracle or druid could work as well). Which is actually what the two players who dropped were playing... Anyhow, get to posting your awesome concepts so we can get on with the game! :P

Alright, I think I've come up with a character. His name is Jarred Gustav (name might change later, I'm just whipping it out of my butt right now). He's a LG rogue with the investigator archetype.

Jarred was born in Cesca and spent his childhood there. As a youth, he displayed a keen mind and an inquisitive personality, and as such he chafed beneath the staunch traditionalists that surrounded him. He appreciated tradition and the grand history of Ustalov, but was eager to experiment and break from the establish order, frequently butting heads with his elders. He found himself dreaming of life in a big city, and when he was 17, he set out to Tamrivena to join the Wallguard and defend his nation.

It went well at first. He he took well to the life of a soldier, enjoying the disciplined lifestyle while recognizing when the unorthodox was appropriate, and he sound found himself occupying the role of a low-ranking officer. Then his duties began to change. As Tarivena began to crack down upon its own citizenry, Jarred was asked time and time again to skirt the edge of morality in the name of the greater good and the rule of law. Eventually, he began to realize that the greatest threat from Ustalov would come not from the orcs at its border, but from the corruption of its own people. He attempted to instigate change in the city, but soon found there was simply too much stacked against him, and he moved to Caliphas, where his sharp mind and skills as a scout earned him a name as a private investigator, and he has made his living in the city over the last several years.

It was during this time that he met Professor Lorimer, who often served as a consultant when Jarred had cases dealing with the arcane. He came to respect the Professor's commitment to righteousness, and upon hearing of his death, he felt it proper to journey to Ravengro to pay his respects. He was held up by work and missed the funeral, but is now drawing near to the small town.

Jarred is jaded beyond his years, but he is still motivated first and foremost by a desire to defend the innocent. After his disillusionment in Tamrivena he found a new respect for the simplicity of his hometown and the innocence that it represents. He would like to see the world in terms of black and white, but has learned that there are many shades of gray, and has taken it upon himself to ensure that the good people of Ustalov never have to operate in those regions of morality. He tends to be a bit tight lipped and puts on a facade of stoic machismo. He likes to work with the local law whenever possible, but when a difficult or controversial choice prevents itself, he prefers to work alone so that the respectable folk don't half to muddy their hands or their names.

That's a rough sketch. I scribbled it out amidst a conversation with some old acquaintances, so I apologize if it's not written too well, though I think it gives a good impression of the character.

Ah, and Jarred may or may not shoot for the Master Spy prestige class. Not really sure.

Dark Archive

The time difference isn't an issue. I'm GMT +3 myself.

For those interested: As the group has already begun, I will be working additional PCs into the game from other angles that aren't necessarily tied to Professor Lorrimor. Additionally, as his will gifted the PCs with a small fortune (after a month), I'll be making arrangements to balance this with another reward (for those characters). Finally, I'll let potential PCs ask the current PCs what they know, with the hopes that no coming in (if you are in the know) spoils anything...

For your consideration-

Jaru Toth

A tall tonsured Osirion dressed in the black robes of Pharasma, Jaru’s destiny as a priest of the Goddess of Fate was set with his first breath. His mother nearly died in childbirth due to a lack of competent priests in his small village in the wastes beyond Shiman-Sekh. Concerned at the lack of priests in the area, his parents bravely dedicated their youngest son to the goddess and the child was taken up by Pharasman nuns.

A favored child of the temple, Jaru was instructed in healing and death rituals. He looked forward to a quiet life as a cloistered priest and healer at the temple until one of his wards succumbed to a virulent strain of ghoul fever and he barely escaped with his life. Many of the beloved sisters of the temple were not so lucky.

Bereaved at the loss of the only mothers he had known, Jaru wandered to Sothis where he first encountered Dr. Lorrimor, who was studying the ghouls of Osirion. Jaru assisted the good doctor in his research on undeath in Osirion and Pharasman death rites.

Recurring memories of his early failure to save the sisters from undeath however have continued to haunt him and finally drove him from his homeland. Lacking direction, Jaru decided to visit his onetime mentor in the far north of Avistan. After an arduous journey, Jaru arrived only to find Dr. Lorrimor had died and just been buried. The somber Osirioni now seeks to find some solace in those who knew the professor.

was considering the Cloistered Cleric archetype from UM, but may not be necessary with bards in the party. Jaru would have the Subject of Study (Undead) campaign trait.

So you like haikus?
I confess I've been spying,
But hey, I'm a rogue.

Incidentally, I may drop the investigator archetype. I jumped to it because it fits the character thematically, but he's not exactly supposed to be a "face" in the diplomatic sense. I'd missed that trapfinding was still necessary to disarm magic traps.

Alright, so yesterday I hammered out a rather hasty concept, and since then, I've had a bit of time to review my options.

At the risk of sounding wishy-washy, I'd like to change the class of my proposed character to a ranger with the urban ranger and skirmisher archetypes.

You've until the 9th. Have at it.

Submitting an application for an Alchemist, hopefully to shore up skills, ranged capabilities, and to add some interesting RP elements to the group.

It's at least in a reviewable state for the concept and rough framework. This is a brand new character, I haven't recycled it.

I share another game (Kingmaker) on here with Madeline/Smith's player, who can hopefully attest to my ability to stick with a game for over a year and post frequently.

Indeed you are, Heinrich Strauss.

Though don't invoke the gods of fate, lest your Real Life rise up and smite thee one. (^_~)

Looking forward to adventuring with whom ever the DM decides. *Bows*

Thought I would throw my hat into the ring. What I have in mind is a longspear using rogue, maybe with the scout template, possibly intending to pick up a level or two of fighter over time. This character already has a pretty clear voice in my head, he sounds a lot like Jeff Bridges' Rooster Cogburn. You have so many people with face skills I thought it would be interesting to make him just horribly awkward socially (interesting, but awkward). I'm flexible on how you could write him in, but I pretty much see him just turning up on the doorstep of the Lorrimor house and insisting that the owes the Professor some sort of favor, irregardless of the fact that he's dead.

In his own words it might go something like this. Think horribly gravelly monotone.

"You Lorrimor's daughter? My name's Dortlin, just got the one name, ain't no one seen fit to give me another one. I doubt he mentinoed me, but I owe him my life. Anyway. I heard the man Lorrimor done died, bashed in the head with a rock or some such. Your daddy, he saved my life one time, so I came to pay my respects. Already been to the graveyard. I done said a few words. Don't know if he heard them or not, like to think he did. Anyway. I owe the man Lorrimor my life, so I come to pay my debt. He ain't here no more, so I reckon I owe you. Anything you need, just let me know. I'll do what I can. Anyway. Don't want to trouble you none, I'll just camp here on your step until we're square. That way I'll be close"

One can see why the Professor might have forgotten to tell Dortlin where he could find him. Well if you all think it has legs, I'll write up a character sheet.

Dortlin:

Several years ago Professor Lorrimor and a few traveling companions had come across a lynching in progress. Ever the busybody, Lorrimor inquired as to the man's crimes, as they were about to string him up. It was replied that the victim was a fiendling, a creature of unnatural evil that didn't deserve any better fate than to dangle. The Professor looked closer at the man about to be stretched, his features weren't fully human, it was sure enough, but he wasn't a tiefling either. There, bound and gagged, before the Professor was the the single scruffiest half-elf that he had ever seen. After another short exchange it became clear that the only crime he was accused of was being of creature of diabolic blood. In short, it was hateful and ignorant men being hateful and ignorant. The Professor and his traveling companions intervened on behalf of the half-blood, running off the small lynch-mob. Urgent business on Lorrimor's part meant they parted ways under that hanging tree, but not before the scruffy half-elf had, rather unceremoniously, thanked him and vowed that he would one day repay the debt.

That half-elf was a wanderer who took work as a caravan guard, scout, and sometimes a bandit if necessary. His name was Dortlin, just the one name, he didn't have another, probably because he was a bastard, the son of some logging camp whore and a daddy with tainted blood he never saw. He grew up rough and to make matters worse he seemed to have knack for rubbing people the wrong way. His mama used to say that sometimes when you mixed things they didn't come out right. Dortlin thinks she was probably right.

Recently, Dortlin had just come off a job and found himself at a nearby settlement. There he overhead a trader coming through from Ravengro talking about the passing of Professor Lorrimor. Still feeling indebted to the Professor, Dortlin set off to Ravengro to pay his respects, and see if he could settle the debt how owed the man post-mortem.

Alright, I know that my application was a bit hasty, and not exactly the strongest in this thread, but I still feel I should inform you that I'd like to withdraw my name from the running.

Much as I'm dying to play in a Carrion Crown adventure, I've just been accepted to another PbP, and I'll be starting my own soon. I'm afraid if I start playing in another one, I'll start to burn out after a couple of weeks, and I don't want to be that guy who just ups and vanishes.

I know this is really just a formality, but I feel I ought to let you know nonetheless, and I wish you the best of luck in braving the perils of Harrowstone.

Noted and communicated to my players. Thank you, all the same.

Cheers,
TRGM

yep. sorry guys. I really wanted to play Carrion Crown and tried to build Jaru to fit in. Unfortunately, I got antsy with the wait and applied to another thread. Wish I would have peeked at your OOC thread earlier and seen I had a good chance. (I mean who doesn't like a friendly cleric?). Sorry again, maybe see you in some other game.

Peeked at your OOC thread. Since it seemed like the odds were good :) ...

I added a [Recent Events] spoiler to Heinrich's profile to spare the GM some pain and effort should things work out.

I presumed some linking with Vaghn, hopefully he doesn't object.

Dark Archive

So far, the consensus is Heinrich and Dortlin.

Dark Archive

Object? I love it! The truly amusing thing is that Vaghn does not even realize he is charming, and probably was completely oblivious to all those women throwing themselves at him. :P Another thing to add to the fire is Vaghn's primary subject of study is magic, while Lepidstadt University is a school of natural sciences for the most part. I could easily see Heinrich looking down on the study of "theoretical magic" in the same way an engineer might dismiss theoretical physics as a waste of time. Anyhow, you have my vote!

I look forward to the interplay, this seed was already growing in the back of my mind when I read your post about Vaghn's take on Time Stop.

We'll get along alright, but 'Rich certainly thinks Vaghn has his head in the clouds versus his eyes on the road, and will likely lament the ease of Vaghn's "charmed life". The fact that Vaghn's "parading" around town in school robes will only add to it. I foresee a Frank Grimes/Homer Simpson relationship brewing (slightly less intense though I'd hope).

One Comment about Vaghn:

Is your weight of 125lbs a typo? That's fairly unhealthy for a 5'7" male, even a Varisian male.

Is it? I am never quite sure of these things; I am 6'0" and average 140 myself, but then again I am really quite thin...

As much as I love all the characters and concepts in/going to be in the game, I just want to go on record now as saying it is probably going to bite us in the rear not having a single full caster in the group. Not having dispel magic handy at 5th level rarely ends well...

Dark Archive

Irregardless (cough cough) of Dortlin's incredible grammar, I'm proud to announce he, alongside Professor Heinrich Strauss, have made the cut. Both of you should immediately, and without delay, proceed directly over to the IC thread here for your party intro. Welcome aboard. \m/

What? It's an irregular form. :)

Have to slap together a character sheet really quick. Regarding traits, how many and from where? Average starting wealth? Anything I should know putting my character together?

-J. Cayne (Annoying prescriptivist since grade school.)

Dark Archive

Dortlin needs to make a profile, once he does, I'll introduce him to the group.

Dark Archive

Average starting wealth, 20 point-buy, and 2 traits (from the Core Book, APG, or Carrion Crown Player's Guide). Most people selected at least 1 campaign trait from the CCPG. I'd suggest the same.

Reckon I got it squared away. :)

That is very skinny... at least if you're over 21.

Height/Weight Chart

You can always refer to the Pathfinder book for weights by race too: PFSRD link

Technically (if you chose to roll) you can't roll a human male under 130 lbs (and that's starting at 5-feet tall even)!

I only point it out, since first impressions, Vaghn could be mistaken as an elf or another race (which may be part of your plan/secret for luring human women? "Hey babe, you know I'm a quarter-elf right?")

Dark Archive

Yep, I am 28, and pretty darn skinny. :P

I changed Vaghn's weight to 135; according to that chart you posted that is still within small frame (which is what I wanted; he should be described as lithe and wiry) but on the high end of it for his height.

I know I'm a day late and a gold piece short, but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring for an alternate should a spot open up. I am a bit of a character making junkie and as such I have several ready made at any given time for each role within a party so if anyone drops I'll be happy to jump in. Anyway good luck to everyone and happy gaming!

Duly noted, sir! Thanks.
