Recently I suggested to some of my friends here on Paizo that we should resurrect(or reincarnate) our old "Realms of Agartha" play-by-post. Rather than go into detail right away and cast wall of text, I'll just quote Lynora, one of our players. She posted this in the Deep 6 FAWTL thread.

Lynora wrote:

Should anyone be interested a play-by-post possibility for those really wacky characters that you might not get a chance to play in the normal run of things. We're trying to decide if there's enough interest to get this rolling now. Only need one or two players though there's room for as many as want to play.

Spoiler:

It's a rules super light game based in the same world as Realms of Agartha (check the pbp board, possibly the archives, I can look up the link if anyone cares), though it's not necessary to have read or even be remotely familiar with that thread. I'll gladly fill you in on the basics. Basically the action would be taking place in a school for magical youngsters. Think a mashup of Hogwarts and the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. Existing characters include weredragon triplets and a good-aligned demon. Power level starts in the mid to upper teens. This is really the beauty of rules almost free, it actually supports that without making you want to tear out hair trying to keep track of all the details. Cause sometimes its fun to play superheroes. :)
We do use dice rolls, but sparingly, and if you have a concept that isn't easily supported by existing rules we can help you cobble together something that works since really all you need is a basic idea that lets you know what to roll for attacks, saves, damage, etc. The focus is more on the shared storytelling aspect of the game. Anyhoo, if anyone is interested just let me know and we can get a discussion thread going. If not then we may just hold off until some of the previous regulars acquire more free time. Thanks for reading this excessively long description anyways. :)

This is too good to pass up! I'd love to play in something like this. Is it open in terms of class/race or do you use PFR for that? Brewing a concept of a megawatt sorcerer who's a pretty-boy class-president type. His sorcery comes from parental collusion with Dark Powers, though, and that dogs him big time. Trying to live down his lineage while living up to his potential while dealing with, you know, being a teen. :-)

O.O this is awesome and is very close to a game I used to be in on LFG. I'd be interested in playing an elven shadow assassin or a roguish character eventually going shadowdancer. He'd be slightly skeptical of humans. Or a human fire/wind caster who also is trained in hand-to-hand combat. He is short around 5'8" and is very defensive about his height.

My fiancé would possibly be interested as well. I'd have to talk to her about it after work.

Ooh, hand to hand combat specialist. That would put you in my class. I so enjoy new students. :)

Aananda is the phys ed teacher. She's also a monk. Among other things. ;)

It is totally open in terms of class and race. Should be vaguely compatible with 3.5/Pathfinder rules, but not overly worried about that. Like I said in the intro, we can cobble together something ruleswise for whatever concept. :)

My favorite of the two is the shadow assassin. He's a bit twisted but in a fun way. :) Or my dhampir gunmage once again same game. I had a lot of characters running around there. :)

Now now, Aananda! You know students have to sign a waiver to be in that class. I can't let you throw boulders at everyone.

As a side note, new teachers as well as students are needed. Several have left due to a recent incident...

Yeah, revealing that I was a cambion may not have been the smartest thing to do at the time..

Oh, yeah, that incident...whew! I was worried there for a second it was something I did...ummmmm....forget I said that, 'kay? ^.^

Word up! In that case I've got two concepts, first the aforementioned Human Sorc, but also a Sylph Barbarian, basically imagine a sylph who "hulks up" into something not at all unlike a Greater Lightning Elemental when danger is present or when she's emotionally distraught. Either one sound like a better fit than the other?

I've also got a level 7 Wizard/Rogue I built for another game that died, who I could resurrect and pump up to play a teacher for y'all if you like. Setrek Dalltur, specializes in "Lost and Found," after his fashion.

Also, I'm playing in DM Barcas' Kingmaker thread as Taisper, his Carrion Crown thread as Marilwenn, and I DM three other homebrew PBPs as DM Downrightamazed if y'all need to see some posting history.

I can also vouch for Havoc XIII as being a terrific gamer to work with, and a fine addition to any PBP.

I like that bottom part makes me feel special :)

Ohhhh man this sounds like just the sort of game I would love o-o! I've been looking for a hogwarts/Xaviers School type of game and never did I expect to find one as a Pathfinder PbP :D!

We're just crazy like that. :D

Got any character ideas already?

I am loving the sylph concept, but really, play what you're going to have the most fun with.

Yeah, think I'm gonna develop the sylph concept. Shall I go ahead and make a profile, etc., or are you guys still taking concept proposals for a while?

For the longest time I've had an interest in incorporeal creatures such as ghosts, and I'd actually sort of like to play something like that if possible.

Other ideas spinning around my head are perhaps playing a product of a wizards boredom "Can I make a smart Ooze? Lets find out!" (Like B.O.B. from Monsters vs Aliens, except I'd probably exchange rnadom insanity with undying curiosity, also probably have a more humanoid form) The incorporeal character idea sort of fits in here to in line with "I wonder how much I can mess with Astral projection" with my character having been the unfortunate subject who lost there body xD

Here is the original Agartha thread for anyone who is interested. Not required reading, kinda different setting, but can give you a good feel for how rules light plays.

Yeah, this could work. Definitely an interesting concept.

Which one the Incorporeal one, the Ooze or both?

Shadow Lodge

The Ooze could be.. interesting. Aananda has already crafted a cybernetic nanite-infest right arm, I'm sure she can make a body suit.

I'm interested!
I had a kobold true necromancer from Libris Mortis as an NPC I wouldn't mind dusting off...
Is there an alignment restriction?

Kryzbyn wrote:

I'd be hesitant about anything south of neutral.

I'm still leaning towards the shadow assassin he'd be a lot of fun. He would be slightly obsessed with blades. As in he would be carrying something like 6 daggers and multiple shuriken. Cyra's character would be closely associated with him they'd be married if possible if not at least dating.

Though all 3 characters are in the running in my head especially if we could come up with some way to make a gunmage maybe a vanguard (sgg class) with proficiency in guns preferably revolvers or clip loaded guns.

Shadow Lodge

For the most part, we pretty much went without mechanics for the characters unless we deliberately wanted to know what boundaries a character had(which didn't always work...).

Think "Rule of Cool"

Rule of cool means Creed the dhampir gunmage is going to be reborn as Asch (last name was abandoned when his mother died by his own hand or at least that's how he sees it.)

The one person he trusts is Cyra's character (this will change over time)

I could do CN with him...

If its "rules light" then the evil tag on most of his spells shouldn't be a problem, right?

Downrightamazed here with my sylph concept. Bit more details in the profile, but purposely didn't go bonkers to honor the rules light-ness of things. :-) Basically she's a normal if slightly more athletically gifted sylph until super angry, under extreme emotional distress, threatened (for real), or similar, at which point she becomes an ancient god of the storm plane called Khoda, done mechanically as a beyond-elder Lightning Elemental.

Anything more y'all would like? Stats? More history/story hooks? Etc.?

[Cameo] As a good many of the spells with the 'evil' tag don't always promote good teamwork, it could be a potential problem, aye.

A little angst and competition is one thing in a freeform PbP, but flat-out interplayer conflict has had a tendency to end badly... [/Cameo]

Shadow Lodge

Well, since the School is supposed to help students gain control of their various talents and abilities, changing like that works nicely. Maybe she doesn't always have control while in that form though?

Another interesting tidbit about Agartha, is that all the lost cities of Earth are a part of it. Ealry in the first thread the city Mentor is mention, and the school itself is name Avalon. I'm pretty sure I'd have lead the group to Atlantis at one point...

So, yeah, Agartha is lost city central.

He's a jerk, to be sure, but not an evil little prick.

I meant more the use of "evil" spells changing his alignment.
Would an undead minion or two be a problem?
I tend to gravitate towards anti-heroes...
Is there a pally?

Dragonborn3 wrote:

Yup! That's exactly what I was thinking.

She literally becomes Khoda and as such is subject to his whims and wants. They share a spirit and a shell, and have to learn to deal with each other without the benefit of ever really being able to communicate directly, so Khoda is trying to nudge in on her daily life as she is trying to get more control over him when she changes, in addition to wanting to learn how to kick off or hold back the change at will, and stay changed for longer or shorter periods of time. So yeah, in a nutshell; control. And hopefully the school will help her gain it.

Here is my gunmage his profile is currently bare as I'm unaware of what is needed yet.

Being an 'antihero' could work, as long as you're not roaming around the halls casting things out of the Book of Vile Darkness. Castting heartcall on somebody who just looked at you funny would be frowned upon.

As far as whether or not someone like a paladin is around - it's a school. Of course there will be ;)

OMG no!

I wasn't planning anything that vile.
animate dead is an evil spell. That's what I'm talking about.
Not planning on sould jar'in any hall monitors or anything :P

Think Snapes.

Gotcha. A young Snape-type could be very interesting. Animating the bodies in the forensics/autopsy class would be classic... :)

Just an inside joke - and the 'memo' is the entire Realms of Agartha PbP. Can't expect you to read all of that in just a few hours! ;)

This particular avatar is one of the core characters from the original Realms of Agartha PbP. He's based on a character I made for a homebrew Dragonstar campaign back in the 3.0 D&D days.

Essentially, he's based off of the character of Gene Starwind from the anime series Outlaw Star. In D20 parlance, he's a fighter/wizard with a gun, though more formally known as an Arcane Gunslinger.

Hope that makes the comment slightly less confusing for you... :D

Yeah, that could totally work. And I don't buy into the whole necromancy is automatically evil thing either. Not really good but I would be willing to say that necromancy spells are neutral. And as long as we're not going all player versus player (we have had this happen, it was bad) it's fine.

Besides, a school full of magical teenagers? Dude, they're all jerks sometimes. It's part of being an adolescent. ;P

So how light are the mechanics?
Do I build the charater as normal and post it somehwere?

This would be my second pbp ever :\

Heh. Just when you thought adolescence couldn't get any worse...

Asch Redgrave wrote:

Hey! I, uh, guess we're gonna have at least one class together then. I'm not really a mage, per se. More of a cleric, really. But I do use a gun to cast spells. Which, as it turns out, really freaks people out the first time I heal them by shooting them.....

Kryzbyn wrote:

No worries. This is totally focused on the storytelling. In general it's a good idea to know your attack bonus, AC, saves, what kind of damage you would do, and some description of what spells/special abilities you have. Really basic. We rarely use rolls so don't stress too much about it.

Yes it does very much thank you. Sad thing is after looking at your character sheet I almost feel like I'm stealing from you since I was going to find some way to do "caster shells". Though I might just do my shadow assassin that way I don't feel "thieving".

No way! You're not thieving. You're borrowing! With permission even. And where better to get training than a school with an arcane gunslinger as one of the teachers?

How would we handle stuff like caster shells (yes I'm stealing from outlaw star awesome show) and firearms just use pathfinder ones or D20 modern? Also lvl and stats since I at least want to know what my stuff is.

I'll see if I can find my old notes, as I actually made a prestige class for this to manage everything. They basically turn scrolls into caster shells - thematically, the process renders the scroll into a fine ash or powder (i.e. arcane gunpowder) that is put in the shell.

Pretty much any spell can be turned into a caster shell variant, and the gunslinger can fire off as many shells as his BAB allows. (They came into being to stay alive in a galaxy ruled by dragons and sorcerers basically - their abilities leveled the playing field for them).

More as I dig it back up.... ;)

Awesome look forward to it.

So what level are we aiming for? Mid to high teens?
Do you need a background write up? Where do I post that?
Is there any general PBP rules I should be aware of?
Is the Kobold necro idea ok?
