You guys play pathfinder with this lady? What happened to the pig faced coke bottle wearing chicks that played DnD when I was growing up?

I'm sure they're still playing, but RPGs aren't restricted to ugly people - male or female. My wife, my best friend's wife, and several other ladies I know all play tabletop RPGs, and I don't consider any of them to be pig faced (especially my beautiful wife, if I do say so myself).

If trees screamed, would we be so apt to cut them down?

Well, Maybe.
If they screamed all the time for no apparent reason.

In roughly 20 years of gaming I have never had a single DM who would allow one iota of 3rd party content in their game, not even stuff out of Dragon Magazine. Everyone sighted the likely hood of rules abuse/ over powered characters as the reason. Its a shame too because there is some good 3rd party stuff out there, but I am guessing none of their previous players culled enough wheat from the chaff for me to get the benifit of the doubt.

As a DM I allow you to bring anything that has seen print to the table for review. But I reserve the right to ban or nerf it on a case by case basis. I recognize the fact you spent some hard earned bucks on a shiney new book and I will try to let you use it as best I can, but I will not let my game become Magic the Gathering where the guy who spends the most bucks wins.

+1

That and a little bit of hygiene goes a long way when in close quarters. :)

Note to self for a future Book of the River Nations supplement.

I've been meaning to do more Encounters and Maps supplements.

Here's a way I can further support the River Nations. Thank you for the idea.

Anyway if I think of anything else during my 9 hours of tedious work I will let you know. Sorry for the poor quality of the post, like I said it was late last night :P

Edit: But I warn you I'm a GM most of the time so my suggestions on player supplements may be sparse.

This. I allow pretty much everything from SGG, Rite, JBE, Open Design, Dreamscarred press and a couple of other products as of right, with anything else being 'let me see it and I'll tell you next session'. I go so far as to produce a guide of what's allowed from where.

Our current campaign includes a Justcar (SGG Inquisitor variant), a multiclassed Phantom (Kobold Quarterly Cleric variant) who uses feats from A Fistful of Denerii, a Cleric who uses the Exalted Destruction domain (SGG again), and the bard has some spells out of Rite's 101 First Level Spells. So, yeah, I play with. fair bit of 3PP stuff.

Indeed!

I've become a somewhat regular consumer of 3PP products, and have liked far more than I have disliked. :)

Just off the top of my head, I own material from:

4 Winds Fantasy (Luven Lightfinger's Gear and Treasure, Inkantations)

LPJ Design/Devil's Workshop (Lost Classes: Thief-Acrobat, the UndeFEATable series)

Open Design (Sunken Empires)

Wicked K Games (Advanced Character Portfolio)

Dreamscarred Press (Psionics Unleashed)

Rite Publishing (#30 Rings of Defense)

Super Genius Games (Advanced Options, Genius Guides, Krazy Kragnar's supplements)

Almost everything I have purchased has seen use (or at least discussion) in my Pathfinder game. Their material has helped me promote the game and generate interest in it in my gaming circle by showing the flexibility of the system.

As always, my humble 2cp.... ;)

I get enough disrespect from the community as is, so apologies for making a fuss if I came across as hostile.

No one should ever get disrespected within their own community for any reason. Being married to a proud, geeky woman, I'm sensitive to it myself as I've seen how those with little or no social skills treat female gamers (we had to kick one guy out of our gaming group for, among other things, making the women at the club uncomfortable).

However, I would also say that no one within our geeky community should get disrespected just because they also happen to pose for nude photos and not look anything like the stereotypical gamer girl. Even is said disrespect was not intended..that is a sentiment we should ALL live with

During 3.x. era, I preferred to use 3rd party content to core support. Monte Cook, Necromancer Games, Sword and Sorcery Studios (Scarred Lands!) and several others.

At this moment, we use Pathfinder core, with several portions from APG and GameGuide, Scarred Lands (setting material plus converted items), Rite Publishing (select items with adjustements, like Book of Monster Templates).
I happen to own (and plan to use) numerous other 3rd party resources by Frog God Games, Raging Swan Press, Open Design.

In general, I have found WotC books beyond the core to be lackluster, bereft of inspiration or prone to breaking established standards (Spell Compendium, various "complete" books), while the settings simply failed to gain my attention.
The 3rd party publishers on the other hand kept on delivering highly polished, innovative and risky products - one had to exercise a lot of caution, but the rewards were (and still are great).

At this point, all I can hope for is that this revival of 3.x continues. There are systems out there which I would consider superior to Pathfinder, however besides Savage Worlds (and possibly GURPS) there is nothing on the par with regard to support or fun [1].

One of the greatest benefits of OGL is that the creative people can pool their talents easily. And given the ease of PDF publishing, it is also easier for authors to join the festival.

Ruemere

[1] There are many various great and successful games out there. Yet, d20 keeps on being the best supported system now.

the metamagic option and the negative level stuff from GR's Advanced Gamemaster's Guide.
I heartily approve! Actually I'd love to do a Pf update for that one, but it doesn't look like GR is going that direction just now. And, honestly. most of the options take very little effort to convert.

Metamagic Points is one of the cooler ideas I've seen to tweak the use of Metamagic.

While the various ideas don't seem to have been presented to be necessarily used together, an AGG/APG themed campaign, incorporating class dodge bonus, metamagic points, levin, the six APG classes, etc. could be funky.

(Updating the Eldritch Weaver to PF sounds like a fun project, but it's probably around item #23 on my list...)

Just looking for somewhat of a rough estimate of why any/all of you guys play with third party content, and if you've found it to be a valuable experience or not

We don't because all our play is network play. That said, Living Arcanis added material from Green Ronin and at least one other company, and it enriched the campaign considerably. It was hard to find three more frightening words than "Green Ronin Assasin".
