Got my gears churning

While not being my favorite theme it turned out surprisingly fun.

Great book! Love the new classes!

Product-Guns and Gears

System- Pathfinder 2nd Ed

Producer- Paizo

Price- $14.99 here https://paizo.com/products/btq029xk?Pathfinder-Guns-Gears

TL; DR- Solid new Pathfinder toys and toy based characters! 95%

Basics- BRING THE BOOM! Guns and Gears brings solid steampunk and introductory industrialization to the Pathfinder setting with new technology and themes, two new classes, a new race, and countless new character options and items.

Mechanics or Crunch- Paizo knows their system the best and they bring the best new materials for their toys. The new classes are fun parts of an ever expanding world. The Inventor is the steampunk inventor you may be searching for, with no magical background or ties like the alchemist. The Gunslinger brings pure boom to any encounter. The new race the Automaton is an interesting, but well supported addition to the world of Golarion. There is just a TON of materials with all kinds of new toys such as new guns, tools, and magic items that can help turn the tide of battle. My only complaints are that the Gunslinger feels a bit under-powered. It is an absolute crit machine, but guns can fall flat if a character spends a day hitting but not critting. That said, what Paizo has here is a FANTASTIC addition to the crunch of Pathfinder. 4.75/5

Theme or Fluff- Guns and Gears is not a small book and there is just an absolute TON of new stuff here. Now in a tool book you would think its just item lists, and there is that, but there is also a bunch of fluff to bring the new stuff into the old game. Pathfinder 1st ed is about 10 years ago in the world of Golarion, so this helps advance the world as the fantasy world gets a bit more pre-industrial. All that said, one thing sticks out and this may just be a me-problem: automatons. I always hate new races in old parts of the world as if we just magically found them in the same places we were. That and they feel out of place and honestly more like a warforged in PF2. Not a game breaker, but something I don’t think I would have wanted in my game. Another nitpick is there are no new spells here, and I feel that's a reasonable, but somewhat annoying choice. If you want some gun spells, look elsewhere. The writers wanted to focus more on mechanics and less on magic, so while I might want some spells, it's ok they are not here. 4.5/5

Execution- It’s Paizo- they know solid book production. Good layout, art, font, hyperlinking, and all the pieces I expect from a AAA RPG company. It's a 50 buck book, but as an evil millennial, I mostly like PDFs, so the 14 bucks for a digital file is extremely worth it. 5/5

Summary-I honestly love Pathfinder 2nd Ed. It's all the pieces of 4th, 3rd, and 5th Edition DnD I want. And differentiating itself from DnD by moving to a more steampunk and pre-industrial culture will help it grow by further making its own path. Guns and Gears is a solid step in that direction with amazing classes, items, and class options. The missteps I see are maybe more opinion; even if they are not my favorite things, they are done well. If you want less magic and more mechanics mayhem in your Pathfinder 2nd Ed, you need this book now! 95%

Many elements underwhelming but what is good is exceptional.

4/5

Very disappointed with the absence of support for much of my pf1 gunslinger weapons; this has created extremely problematic continuity issues in two of my campaigns—both currently put on hiatus due to player disappointment.

Should be noted, *none* of the disappointment is toward the loss of touch ac; this actually made my players relieved so they don't have to choose to "be less optimal" to not trivialize encounters and I don't have to over compensate for it in encounter strength.

Any idea when we will get the profiles on the new Iconics. I really loved the new Summoner's history. The Dwarf Gunslinger and half-orc(?) inventor has got me on the edge of my seat.

True, the development of armor predates the invention of guns by several centuries. OTOH, kevlar armor was not developed to stop swords.

Wayfinders

Between the inclusion of explosives and archetypes in this book, I strongly suspect that some sort of Demolitionist archetype is in this one.

It means the digital files went off to our printing partner two Fridays ago to be transformed into physical books, yes!
This is why physical book only errata happened in Mwangi book huh?

I would likely guess so. The problems/perils of physical publishing.

We have a blog calendar, but I don't want to set exceptions that might need to change. Our focus is on Secrets of Magic before Guns & Gears. Thanks.

Our first meeting to talk about what the cover should be, Jason goes "It's probably the iconics fighting fire giants in a big forge, right? Wayne can put in lots of vibrant reds and dynamic shadows, we can get some big gears and chains in, should look good, yeah?"

We did spitball around other ideas, but the thing Jason suggested right off the bat ended up being the thing that everyone agreed just made the most sense! I think it really turned out well.

Speaking of, the GenCon Online streaming schedule is up and you may notice that Thursday includes a designer showcase for Guns & Gears! We're going to have at least one cool announcement related to the automatons and will be showcasing at least one automaton heritage and feat during the panel, so tune in if you can!

Looking forward to it, Michael!

That is very exciting news! Please showcase as much art as you can of all the gadgets, guns, scenery from Arcadia, and illustrations of feats in action, too.

Do we know anything about how the Way of the Spellshot works? I’m struggling to imagine anything other than a Starlit Span Magus with a gun.

…speaking of, how hard will proficiency with firearms be to get? Is it GM fiat, or must it be purchased with a feat/Archetype?

Just like in the playtest, firearms come in simple and martial versions (plus a few advanced for the final release), so getting proficiency is essentially as easy as getting proficiency in any other weapon. They continue to be uncommon though, so gaining access by being from one of the several places mentioned to grant access or getting clearance from your GM is the primary toggle for using them.

One of the obvious questions is whether it will be BYOS (Bring Your Own Spells) or if any casting - presumably cantrips - would be included. It might be set up to work something like Starlit Span but just give incredibly limited casting on its own, so that any additional spells have to come through archetypes and therefore eat up class feats. Maybe a structure kind of like eldritch trickster? "Here, have a caster archetype, it comes with two cantrips, if you want more that's on you?"

What are the odds Inventors get an ability to swap the damage type of their Weapon Invention to something like fire or electricity? It wasn’t in the playtest, but I’d /really/ like the ability to be hauling away my precious homemade lightning gun.

No, the new Ancestry is Jistkan Automata. A quick search for “Pathfinder automata” should show you a bunch of cool constructs with one glowing eye; it’s those.

Will there be info on how they are different from androids?

Oh I did a Google search and I like them, very neat!

Androids are creatures of incredible technology made by a sci-fi culture on another world; Automata are souls magically stuffed into crafted bodies by an ancient empire of artificers. They have a pretty distinct flavor even before getting into the mechanics we don't yet have.

Warforged?

Terevalis Unctio of House Mysti wrote:
Warforged?

I think conceptually the automatons would be closer to warforged than the androids are, but the lore as I understand it is markedly different, and visually the Jistkan Automatons are much less humanoid than even the warforged, who at least have humanoid-ish faces.

Grand Archive

Androids are "synthetic humans", so they have supple polymer skins, nanofibers structured like muscles to move their skeletons, actual organs, and a synthetic fluid that mimic blood enough that they can get infected, and the false biology is so close to a human's that they can get infected with poisons and diseases like most living beings. Their bodies are so lifelike that wandering souls end up being drawn to these bodies, and they wake up as fully living creatures.

Automatons are metal constructs made eons ago by powerful casters that uploaded their souls into magical cores fitted into these mechanical bodies.

(As androids have been released for PF2, I know more about them. :P )

Warforged are a third, distinct thing, as they were recently invented (within the last fifty years) and seem to be newborn souls - distinct from the sci-fi androids and the ancient, human-souled automatons.

Androids house newborn souls as well. In fact, while their souls are capable of reincarnation forms, reincarnated souls can not be housed in an Android body. This would suggest that the soul possessing the Android would have had to go through the entire process of being created anew in order to be an Android. Probably has something to do with the purity of a soul at that point? Who knows.

But, that still seems accurate. The distinction, perhaps is maybe that the souls present in Warforged are maybe spontaneously developed ones, created outside the normal cycle of existence? It's been a while since I dove into the lore of D&D at all. So I couldn't say for sure.

So, they seem to have more in common with Android than Automaton; the difference being more the time frame and method of creation.

I do not know what is Warforged soul status(google said some of them wonder if they even have them), but either way they are magical artificial soldiers that have great deal of personality.

So in that respect yes bit similar, androids are advanced intelligent biotechnological robots that were so advanced that they attracted soul stuff to them though they weren't intended to. So both are similar in that they were originally created as form of servants, I think main difference is that one of them is strictly scientific and one of them is strictly magical :p

Maybe it could be that a reincarnated soul has already been in a real living body, so know the difference and can't be tricked into thinking the android body is a fully biological living being?
