Help me build an NPC

Advice

Background: Down on his luck mercenary. He found an enchanted buckler off the corpse of a dead stone giant early on his career (heavy shield for him), and has built his fighting style around the effective use of his shield. Currently, he earns his living by hiring himself out to disreputable, but wealthy people as a bodyguard.

Level: 4 fighter

Stats: 15 point buy

Given the above info, can you come up with a unique and fun build? Thanks.

Half-Elf fighter/4
Str 16, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 8, Cha 10
HP: 42; AC: 22; Touch: 12; Flat Footed: 20; Speed: 30 ft.
Fort +6; Ref +3; Will +2 (+2 vs Enchantments, +1 vs fear, immune to magical sleep); Initiative +6
Battle Axe: +8 1d8+3 20/X3
+1 Heavy shield "Balkor": +3 AC; -1 ACP; 15% spell failure
Breast Plate: +6 AC, +4 Max Dex, -3 ACP; 25% AS
Feats: Shield Focus, Improved Initiative, Combat Reflexes, Body Guard, Toughness, Weapon Focus (Battle Axe)
Skills: Intimidate +2, Perception +3
Special Features: Dual Mind alternate racial feature, Armor Training I, Bravery

Balkor is an intelligent shield. With it's low ego score it has happily resigned itself to helping whomever it's current wielder is. Balkor has the following stats.
Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 10; Empathy, senses (30 ft), Guidance at-will (self or wearer only)
Price: 2,157 GP

Went a little over the budget for a 4th level NPC, but only by 100 Gp or so.

Wow, I like it. Especially 'Balkor' the intelligent shield. The shield is the size of a stone giant's head and is emblazoned with the face of a long dead stone giant chieftain. A minor glamor causes the face to grimace when struck and grin whenever it uses its spell-like-ability.

Elves and half elves are rare in my Golarion, so the NPC will be human. I'm thinking I should give him weapon specialization as his bonus feat.

Alternately, I was thinking of making Balkor a tower shield and building the NPC as a phalanx warrior archetype. Thoughts?

A tower shield will lower his to hit by 2. Weapon spec would be a good feat if you go this route.

Human Phalanx Fighter 4
Str 16, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 8, Cha 10
HP: 42; AC: 25; Touch: 13; Flat Footed: 22; Speed: 20 ft.
Fort +6; Ref +3; Will +2, Initiative +6
Lucerne Hammer: +5 1d12+3 20/x2 (Reach/Brace)
+1 Tower Shield "Balkor": +5 AC; +2 Max Dex; -10 ACP
Breast Plate: +6 AC, +4 Max Dex; -3 ACP
Feats: Shield Focus, Improved Initiative, Combat Reflexes, Body Guard, Toughness, Dodge
Skills: Intimidate +2, Perception +3
Special Features: Stand Firm, Phalanx Fighting

Gives you reach, very good AC for 4th level (to go even higher, fight defensively), and is well on his way to Combat Patrol if that's something you'd be interested in.

Make him Large (via Enlarge Person from his bodyguard (or a potion), and thats some serious threat range. If someone absolutely needs to die, drop the shield and two-hand that lucerne hammer to lay the smack down.

You could reasonably squeak Power Attack in there somehow (probably losing Bodyguard or Improved Initiative) to make for a better all-arounder, if you so chose.
