Wanted Posters!

Rise of the Runelords

Hey guys, I'd like your help in deciding what the main baddies in Burnt Offerings are wanted for.

(I'm using this awesome website to make the wanted posters)

Here are the villains that I'm making posters for:

- Orik
- Lyrie
- Brusazthmus a.k.a. "The Mosswood Lurker"
- Jubrayl

Well, I'm not sure what point in the campaign you're making these for. I know in my campaign, Orik and Lyrie aren't really wanted for anything at the beginning. IIRC, Lyrie is suspected of murder, but wasn't ever really charged with anything. Orik is just a mercenary for hire. Well... there is that one small matter of some guy in Riddleport that wants him dead... In Riddleport, I'd have him wanted for murder (more valuable dead than alive). But probably not really anything outside of Riddleport.

Not that they're "good guys," it's just that the things they've done aren't exactly known, just yet. I would think that they only way the players are likely to even know their names is if they are really thorough with interrogating Tsuto. Now, after Thistletop, if they escape, they'd have a much longer list. This thread may have some more information for you.

As for Jubrayl, i would think there would be multiple counts of conspiracy, extortion, theft, burglary, and basically anything else you could see a mafia leader being accused of, since that's basically what he is. I believe, though, that his identity as the local Scarzni (sp?)leader is somewhat of a secret, so he might not have wanted posters either.

The "Mosswood Lurker" would probably be the most likely candidate for a wanted poster. I would say murder, theft, cattle/sheep rustling, vandalism, and kidnapping would all be perfectly within reason for him. I would say he's had years of generally being a menace to build up a pretty nice rap sheet.

This thread should have a few ideas for you. I basically had Sherrif Belor rattle off a list of charges before booting Tsuto in the face. My players jaws hit the floor.

Essentially it comes down to how you tie Lyrie and Bruthazmus etc. to the Goblin Attacks. 1600 counts of attempted murder, anybody? Add with that consorting with goblins and engaging in cult activity, graverobbing, kidnapping and Orik's charge of First Degree Murder in Riddleport (though that doesnt carry a lot of weight in Riddleport of all places).

Jubrayl is easy, but the problem is his many "fall guys" making him essentially untouchable, and the secrecy surrounding his position.

And our good friend EtsuElfRanger has the perfect charge for Bruthazmus.

So, following my TPK with Ripnugget, I decided to use the Help Wanted board at the Rusty Dragon to pull the new characters in the storyline. One of the ones they picked was the bounty on Bruthazmas. What I'm wondering is how big his reward should be. I'm leaning towards 1,000 gp since I will have 5 players by that point. They already accepted the job w/o asking about the reward, so I have some time left to decide. The were headed toward Mosswood when we ended last and I'm gonna say that there's a fairly slim chance of him being there, trying to "recruit" some more goblins to Thistletop.

1000 gp seems reasonable, although really the answer depends on the overall balance of treasure in your campaign.

One idea I'll throw out is splitting the reward. Say 200 gp is being put up by the town of Sandpoint (because they're not rich, and they've lived with Bruthazmus for a while, so it's not tops on their priority spending list) but another 800 gp is coming from a merchant based in Magnimar who once lost a caravan to Bruthazmus and now hates him a lot. In order to collect the second part of the bounty, the PCs will have to bring Bruthy's head to the merchant to prove they earned their pay.

It's a pretty easy additional hook to make sure they eventually head to Magnimar and then have something else to do in town. You may or may not need it; I'm mostly just suggesting it because I've seen a couple of other threads where people said they had problems getting the PCs to travel from Sandpoint to Magnimar.

(My own campaign erred in the other direction -- I threw out so many "GO TO MAGNIMAR" signs that the party very nearly skipped Thistletop to head there first.)

After reading all the previous excellent suggestions on rewards for going out and adventuring, why not something different?

How about a poster from Hannah Valerrin, placing a reward for people to gather herbs from the local wildlands? In return, she would offer up a couple of thumbpots of an medicinal salve, which could be used to assist a healer's kit. Say, four applications per pot, which help recover an additional 1-3 hp per day when used by someone with the Heal skill, that works alongside the normal healing rate?

In this case, I'd allow her to offer one thumbpot for every two PC's.

Sort of a low grade non-magical version of the Keoghtom's ointment.

Afterwards, for future reference, you can place the price of the thumbpots at 15sp each. So it's not out of the reach of a normal worker.
