It's well made, but maybe a bit to dark and possible for my tastes.

There is some nudity yes, but they aren't liking it.

I think my favorite so far has been Luke Cage though.

I've seen nothing but Iron Fist, so far, and only part of that.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the other series!

I actually only decided to watch it, because of some seemingly-unlikely accusations made elsewhere on the forums and research into the related controversy. I honestly had no idea which one was first (though now, upon research, it seems it's Daredevil), so I just started with this one.

What's the controversy over Iron Fist? And I'm curious what you like about it, if you don't mind elaborating?

Personally I like Daredevil and Jessica Jones the best, Luke Cage gets good after he gives up on the "I'm just a guy minding my own business" attitude, and Iron Fist I like least. It's the only one I didn't watch all the way through, despite Jessica Henwick ticking all of my boxes. Defenders is an action movie split into however many episodes, loved it.

I'm coming at all of these shows having never read the comic books, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Some people complained that he wasn't Asian. Which was stupid, since he was never Asian, though I doubt that was the controversy being mentioned here.

The main complaint I've heard is that he is too whinny and has to much baggage to have ever become the iron fist, as he is depicted in the show.
Personally, I don't mind that too much, but it is probably among the slowest of the four series.

I found out today the one person I don't like on the boards (no one here, from the AP boards, I doubt anyone knows him) lives closer then anyone else I know of.

Is that irony?

Probably. But you know the saying, "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer, lest they do you harm."

Man, it has just NOT been our day.

The family LOVED the Muse concert, but once I saw NobodysWife dancing in the aisles I was pretty sure today was going to be very low-energy. And yep, just kind of hanging out with "Good Uncle" taking it easy because she's really tired. Unfortunately, it's one more year of missing Whingey Wizard's birthday party. We haven't gone in a few years, and he was trying a new format this year, so we figured we should show up for a while. Unfortunately NobodysWife wasn't feeling up to it, and so yet another cancellation. Pesky surgery!

Since we didn't want to go out to dinner, we decided to do TryCaviar again. They were pretty terrible with our first few orders (2 of 5 were missing dishes that we'd ordered and paid for), but after I wrote a nastygram they shaped up... for all of 3 orders.

Tonight, the driver forgot our entire dinner!

I kid you not. He showed up with a pair of mango lhassi, some naan, and an order of samosas. I mean, seriously!?!? How can you forget the dinner when bringing the dinner is your entire job?!?!?!

Fortunately, an employee of the restaurant took her responsibilities far more seriously than he did, and she actually looked at the phone number on the receipt, called us, got our order, and personally dropped it off to us in her own car.

Seriously, TryCaviar?

I sent them another nastygram, but considering the first one obviously didn't improve their quality control, and they have drivers who can forget your entire dinner, they're off my list.

And by the way, lisamarlene, whatever we decide to do next weekend (assuming NobodysWife is OK after her second procedure), we're doing the Himalayan place. Because a place that makes incredible food AND has employees responsible enough to deliver your dinner to you deserves my business.

Nope, that was pretty much the controversy. I didn't know what the controversy was, just that it was "racist" for some reason.

I've since read up on it, and it is apparently part of a larger frustration with Marvel not giving enough Asian- or Asian-American actors parts, along with Dr. Strange (a semi-legitimate complaint to one extent, but a complaint that also seems to ignore both the writers'/directors' abilities and legitimate attempts to avoid causing potentially worse problems) and Captain America (I really and truly have no idea with this one).

As far as Ironfist goes, I actually enjoy the slower pacing. The fact that he's really not that good a superhero - nor even actually out to be a superhero, at first - is actually kind of refreshing. The fact that he has a large number of issues - mental and emotional - that hamper him, and that he really doesn't know how to fit into the normal world, as a whole, is actually a very legitimate thing.

The one thing I really wish they'd done was go into his backstory more - shown his trip from the Himalayas to the U.S. - though, of course, the early part of the show (where they're - rather unsuccessfully, I think - trying to get you to question his identity with the rest of the world) would be kind of spoiled if they do (as you would have seen him get the fake passport).

I mentioned something similar here.

Jessica Henwick is absolutely freakin' amazing, and I have exactly one problem with her: she's too daggum pretty. I mean, look, there is nothing wrong with a gorgeous and skills martial artist, but she literally goes to a fight-club, has a dude twice her size smash her in the mouth (more than once - she even bleeds from this), and she goes home with those perfect daggum teeth, and no bruises. O.o

I mean, you know... that's just... not even Ironfist gets away with that in his own show. (I don't mind someone outclassing him, but he is literally the only one with super powers of any sort, here, so... and they've shown others getting bruised before, as well.)

As an aside, I get the feeling I'm supposed to know Claire. Like, it seems like it's a big deal that she's there, and there's this whole... thing where she's had "business" with "The Hand" before.

Anyway, I just got to the part where he fought in the quasi-tournament with The Hand. It's pretty good!

Basically, it feels like a PF character's journey, in a good way - and I also like how his magical super-fist-powers can't simply punch all of his problems away. He's not automatically guaranteed pretty much anything at all, even though he's a super-good martial artist with magic fist power. He slowly wins, yeah, but it's an effort, and he rather definitely doesn't get it done all on his own - it requires patience and skill and, most importantly, help and support from everyone around him.

I also like how the Meachums are sort-of-kind-of antagonists and sort-of-kind-of allies, at the same time, and have both serious and really genuinely valid concerns with Danny coming back. The fact that I empathize with them when Danny does foolish or harmful things comes from the fact that the Meachums - wealthy as they are - aren't automatically the ones being harmed, here: many livelihoods are at stake when Danny makes a (well-meaning) blunder, and he simply doesn't understand economics very well (and especially not modern politics or realities), despite being a genuinely good guy. I also like how deeply unsettling Harold's relationship with his children is - how desperate, in some ways, Harold is to be a good person, but how incredibly and deeply flawed and harmed he is, as well, resigning him to being wicked even in his attempts to be better. He's a manipulative, corrupt jerk who can't stop manipulating and harming his son - whom, I think, he genuinely loves - even as he tries to free himself from an evil organization... and who is, himself, evil. nopoliticsnopoliticsnopoliticsnopolitics-
*cough!*

>.>

Anyway! The fact that Ward is so broken in his own ways, but sincerely cares for Joy more than anything - even himself - and Joy's devotion to the company and what they do, and the tension those three relationships engender is pretty great, as well.

But, yeah, mostly it's about Coleen... oh, and, of course, Danny.

:)

(No, but seriously, I'm a sap and thus hooked on the soap-opera question of "will they/won't they" because, dang it, I love a good romance, and there's the whole question with Joy, which, frankly, I don't ship, despite their obvious childhood love for each other, and still-current relationship, because, strong as that bond is, she simply has too little in common with Danny for it to be a good, reasonable and lasting relationship; sure, they could make it work, of course, but their chemistry and relationship seems deeply fraternal - it could work, and they could make it, but they are people who have different priorities and understandings of the world, and even if they educate each other, that's going to be an ongoing tension that could cause untold amounts of problems over time. Dang it.)

XD

EDIT: in fact, everyone in the how fell asleep while I was putting the youngest to bed, so I'm watching it right now!

EDIT 2:

Episode 7 Spoiler:
Okay, so, she, like... purposefully got him drunk enough to a) not feel all that pain he was in, and b) seduce him?!

That... that's... wow.

O.O

The fact that both were with it enough to clarify and request consent and mutually agree to give it makes it not-creepy/evil, but, still. I mean - it's super-clear what she's doing.

Unrelated: I really want Ward to not become super-evil.

Also, also, I strongly suspect that Harold has become more of a sociopath (and broken mind/memories) since dying and coming back from the dead. And he wants to make Ward like him.

:/

hmm... so it was that complaint.

Like I said, rather silly, as even the Danny Rand from the comics wasn't Asian, and one would most likely have to seriously alter his back story/origin to make it work, and then a New York scenery for the show makes no sense, and thus we wouldn't have the defenders. Granted, they've got the license to do what they want in that regard, (Ala Nick Fury; Brilliant casting choice BTW) but, that also means, that there is little legitimate complaint there.

Episode 7 part two:
Wow, that was a... busy episode.

Murder of a main cast (though, since he's already come back once, I suspect he'll get better again), complete "cross the line" by another main cast, and death of a secondary character, as well as ousting from the board. Hm.

In unrelated news, I'm glad to see that such things were covered. Usually that 51% thing is used as a method of unassailable monarch-like mastery of a company forever. Heh. First Spiderman, and now Ironfist - weird how comic book movies get business things more accurate than most films.

She's meets all four of them (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist) by accident, befriends them, and helps them all out. She also kind of helps bring them together in Defenders. So, yeah, they do assume you know who she is by the time she meets Danny.

I'm always glad when I'm not at work, but I'm especially glad I wasn't here yesterday. According the log, we had a family staying here who trashed the pool, trashed the lobby, trashed their rooms, and stole chips and candy from our market (we have a few shelves of snacks and a fridge with drinks instead of vending machines). Apparently several staff members confronted them during the day/night, and as far as I can tell, the only reason they weren't thrown out on their asses is that they're family of an employee at our sister property next door. Really glad I didn't have to deal with any of that.

I do not have words to describe my loathing for those who do such things... and those who pretend that "family" is a strong enough reason to tolerate such things. Of course, I'm Lawful. If I were the hotel owner I'd have thrown them out and fired the employee. "Sorry. You brought 'em. You pay the consequences for their behavior."

Congrats on not being at work!

Well, it depends on whether it was a, "Hey! Sherry works at that place! Let's go trash it!" With her neither inviting them nor being told (I've seen it happen), or whether she knew they were coming, and was informed they were misbehaving. Can't fire people for having <expletive> relatives - many of us would never work again!

More on that topic, spoiled for politics:
It was indeed.

I get the complaint, and I understand its source.

The lack of representation is a legitimate complaint in its own way, and can be rectified - while I'll be the first to admit I didn't like the "new" Fury because he was so different... at first... he has since proven that he is the single most awesome version of the character.

But the thing is that insisting others have to change something along those same lines (and calling not doing so "racist") lacks any reasonable force, and actually harms any attempt at persuasive dialogue, because you're immediately forcing people to be on the defensive: that shuts down reasonable communication.

The Dr. Strange one has two points of legitimacy - the titular doctor himself was once perceived as non-specific Asian (though this is the much weaker argument, considering he's been perceived as white for most of his career); and The Ancient One (problematic for multiple reasons, and any writers attempting to do pretty much anything with the original story would almost certainly receive backlash; nonetheless, a more reasonable objection).

Frankly, I would have been quite happier with a more diverse representation - at least after I get over the whole "Ack! That wasn't the character I've grown up with!"-shock that I went through with Fury, presupposing whatever actor they got was solid enough to help me over my reactionary* traits (and I would imagine they wouldn't hire an actor without making sure they're awesome or have an awesome take on the character).

* Crap: I'm lawful after all. >XI

As a member of an ethnicity that is rather well represented, I can't fairly say that I understand. I'll admit that. But in the desire for greater representation, I want a valid, viable dialogue that supports people's good decisions and simultaneously decreases resistance while increasing support.

Labeling these sorts of things with extremely strong language meant to provoke and shame isn't really going to make positive change. It makes people defensive and angry, or extremely leery of trusting your word, while simultaneously giving exposure to the very thing you're crusading against... like what happened with me and Ironfist, a show I'd literally been avoiding (just because I didn't want to commit the time to it) until a well-meaning but highly specious argument was made about it, causing me to doubt the veracity of all such statements and source (even as I looked into the arguments), and driving me to watch the thing just so I could see what people were talking about.

If an argument is well-made and reasonable, I'm much more willing to listen. But if you broadly attack things as wrong with no supporting evidence, and explicitly label things that seem less problematic as major transgressions with them, it's not persuasive.

Again, this isn't to say that the poster in question is bad or unlikable - they're a perfectly okay person, from what I can gather, and probably pretty nice, to boot. So I'm not against that person.

Further, I wholeheartedly support things that makes greater representation of our overall population and better and more broad acceptance.

Calling something "racist" because, despite its inclusive nature it's not inclusive enough is actively attacking those who would be your allies - and that's just not a great idea.

As a random aside, I've noticed that Iron Fist has managed to pass the Bechdel test more than once. So, you know, that's nice.

Episode 8:
Clair is super-wrong.

"Killing is wrong no matter who pulls the trigger or why." is fundamentally untenable.

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." isn't actually incompatible with allowing the killing of others. Mercy is good and important, but there must be actions taken to protect others, and, if there is no reasonable way to believe a change will take over a murderous individual, it is irresponsible and immoral to permit said individual to continue their acts.

The Joker needs to be killed.

Not for the sake of vengeance, though catharsis is certainly going to happen to his victims.

The same is true for Gao.

War doesn't just happen because your side gets greedy. It can, but it's also caused by a host of potential problems and issues.

War is never a good thing, but sometimes it's necessary.

Death is never a good thing, but sometimes it's necessary.

"Total pacifism" is a luxury purchased by the blood and violence of others. Sometimes pacifism is the right things. Non-violence is better than violence. But violence must happen when violence is brought against those who cannot protect themselves.

While Danny isn't quite correct - he's seeking vengeance, not justice - he also should kill Gao, because it needs to happen for the betterment of everyone.

Ah! Thanks! :D

Episode 9:
Huh: looks like I was super-right about Harold!

He's back and super-legit even more evil!

Also: Claire's morals seem to be flexibly convenient - "Truth serum! It violates the sanctity of the mind, but it's better than torture or killing murderers!" I mean, you know, I, personally, would prefer mind-control to death (because that way I'm still alive to do more good things later), but I know many would rather die than have their mind violated. I mean, sure, torture doesn't work, so that's not a valid option, but I mean, really: the serum thing feels a bit hypocritical.

Gao is hilariously evil. I actually enjoy how evilly charismatic she is.
