Yes; it was really nice, and my wife got to see all her family.

My partner has been having a really tough time with being unemployed. I'm trying my best to keep him positive, but he's heard the usual chin-up stuff too many times. If you don't mind my asking, what sort of coping method would you recommend?
Treppa wrote:
Anyplace he could volunteer - Habitat for Humanity, charity work, free tutoring, etc? Oftentimes feeling useful is an excellent cure for the unemployed blues.

The coping method gets tougher when the unemployment lasts longer. There are times I'm sure I'm 'unemployable' because of the length of time spent in it. It's almost a discrimination in its own right as you see jobs posting that they prefer 12 months of previous continuous employment - as if this was an indicator that I have attendance issues. :/

Volunteer work - the only problem is that it doesn't pay the mortgage and auto loan. I apologize if it sounds cynical, but it's the reality that some folks are in.

I have a nagging suspicion I've told this anecdote before... Pretty early into my MAC 2311 (Calculus with Analytic Geometry I) course, I figured out I had little-to-no chance of achieving a passing grade on the final, which was 70%-80% percent of the class grade. So I instead spent most of the semester learning to program my TI graphing calculator with all the formulas... which I then used to pass (cheat) the test (A-).

Depends on the professor. I've had one professor that didn't care how you got the answer as long as you got it. Now if your answer was incorrect, you'd best have some work to show how you came to your conclusion to get partial credit.

The current professor I have wants to see the work. There are a couple things that I can work out very quickly w/o doing all the graphing or tables, but I get the answer right yet get dinged for not showing the work.

Condolences on the loss, Heath. My own uncle passed away last year at 94+ years of age. Great man, if a bit horny...when his wife passed, he married his mistress...there's a deeper story there, I'm sure, but there seems to be noone left alive to tell me more.

She's been posting over in Treppa love fest lately.

EDIT: Scratch that, it was the Imagine gamers looks thread.

Hopefully we will be able to put together an entire hidden weapon-based ensemble for her. I really want to see if a tiara laser(preferably voice activated- Jess BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM!!!!!) is doable.

This is just one of my numerous problems with math. There were just times where I knew the answer was 52, for example, but I just couldn't explain how.

Yeah Heathy, +1 on the condolences for your loss.

And +1 to Urizen, Shiny, and Freehold on the rough job market right now. Freehold, I know it's gnawing at your reserves of restraint, but stick with the job as long as you can, or until you can line up something concrete to replace it.

And good luck to Badger on SupaStah! Round 4. Break a leg, rip off a face, whatever badgers due to appease the gods, luck, and fate.

Thanks Ambrosia Slaad. Reassurance helps.

What convention, Monkey?

Where in OK, Heath?

Why is there no winter storm, canceling schools and forcing me back into bed to hibernate this morning?

I guess those are the only questions I have for now.

The Illuminati's weather control machine blew a circuit the other day, and they've been having a hard time fixing it.

It sounds cheesy, but I was going through a f+@$ed up time last year.

I listened to the Al Pacino speech from Any Given Sunday over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over until I clawed my way out.

You have no idea how much I needed this right now. *I* had no idea how much I needed this right now.

Well, Bob's attempts to claim workman's comp for his back injury were put to a halt after he was seen over the weekend playing in a miniature golf championship tournament. Meanwhile, Al thought he was finally going insane and hearing voices, only to later realize that his hearing aid had somehow become attuned to a coworkers ipod. And, across town, Bill was convinced that several of his employees were planning to....No, wait! That's my soap opera.

Rant:

All day long, I talk to people whose job it is to maintain their companies' employee databases and payroll records. I would take that job.

Here's a clue, if you don't know how to operate a web browser, send an email with an attachment, or copy and paste a piece of data in Excel, THAT JOB IS NOT FOR YOU! GIVE ME YOUR JOB! I WANT IT! I WOULD DO IT BETTER!

I AM NOT MICROSOFT TECH SUPPORT! IF I WERE, I WOULD PROBABLY BE MAKING MORE MONEY! SERIOUSLY, GIVE ME YOUR JOB!

It's not like this is complex programming. It's basic computer functionality being asked of people who are essentially database administrators. How can you track a company's payroll if you don't know how to use Excel? Do you use an abacus?

Anyway, after that 25 minute phone call, I had to get that off my chest.

Silver Crusade

Thanks, Jess!

Wowsers! You are definitely right about that point. I manage data records and have to correct/save the HR schmucks from messing up their own files on a regular basis.

It was just one of those calls...

Spoiler:

Me: "Just copy and paste the data into the correct row."
Them: "You're going to have to tell me how to do that."
Me: "Why don't you just email me the spreadsheet."
Them: "Is that something I do in the website?"
Me: "No, it's something you do using your email service. Do you use Outlook?"
Them: "Yes, but I have the website open. How do I get to Outlook from here?"
Me: "Minimize the browser window."
Them: "What do you mean 'minimize'?"
Me: HULKSMASH!

So I'm taking a basic computer course this semester because I wanted to learn the finer points of Excel and Power Point and so help me that conversation sounds almost exactly like some of my classmates. The first week of class was....there aren't words. I'm not sure if they're that stupid or they've just been living under a rock, with one free pass for the two people in their seventies who have an at least understandable excuse. The guy who was retaking the class because he'd failed it once...HOW?!

I have a woman taking Network Administration with me. She has trouble finding the Control Panel. I'm hoping she's just auditing the class, because she is way behind.

I fondly remember my first computer class, around 93 I guess, one of my classmates managed to "format C" roughly 5 minutes before we where allowed to even start the computer :-) teacher said it was a new record

lol. Yeah, my first computer class was...uh, junior high? I remember it not so fondly. Oregon fricking trail. Basically you had an hour to complete a mindlessly simple assignment. So I was usually done in five minutes. And if you were done early you got to play Oregon Trail as a reward....it's not that rewarding when you're done early every day. I'm still trying to figure out how some people actually had a hard time finishing in the hour alloted...

Too bad I forgot most of the crap I learned back then and have to retake it all now anyways. :)

This will certainly date me - My 1st computer class used a paper ribbon to record the programs. It was a major upgrade when we started using cassette tapes later on.
