My god this day was humbling.
Misread a text as I was tired from work and thought I had to go to my friends house to pick up van and take to his mom's house. His mom's house is a few blocks from my job. His house is on the other side of town.
It was the other way around. That's why he called me.
*sigh*
Got there, realized I was wrong and turned around.
Uber to his mom's place, which wasn't fun financially as i discovered my metrocard had been charged twice for the bus trip there and the irs has "no idea" where my refund is so I'm running on fumes until I get to Chicago and Friday.
Get the van, play with the science child(who was up and alert and excited) and hug a tired new mom.
Drive to friends house and apologize for the stupidity.
He tells me it's no big deal, he had the spare car and would have driven me to his mom's to pick up the other car.

I've always wanted kids and I'm feeling frustrated because my economy is not good enough to have kids.

There is nothing quite so gratifying as getting back from a trip, pulling up in front of the sick kid's house, and having a woman you've never met before run up and embrace you in a huge hug of gratitude. After all was said and done, I got Z and Lon home safely, and the gratitude from everyone (chaperones, parents, and kids) was palpable.
It's one of the huge perks of going on these trips in the first place.
Sunday, April 9, 6:45 am - 6:20 pm
About the only irritation on Sunday was getting the text at 6:45 am that CK was leaving to take "responsible boy" to the airport. G had already left with her son, so I was alone in the hotel with Impus Major, Z, and Lon. CK's daughter was in another room in a different hotel, and if she happened to show up I was supposed to look after her as well, but I think she's 16 or 17, and I wasn't particularly worried that she was going to come wandering over. So I checked on Lon: His breathing was fast but steady, he had no fever, and he otherwise seemed responsive. I showered, dressed, had a bit more abysmal coffee, and waited for everyone to stir. We had a huge number of leftover pastries (and a huge amount of garbage) in the main room, so I had some food, left a decent tip for the poor maid who'd have to deal with all this stuff, and at least got it all organized so it would be easier for her.
By around 8:30 am, Z and Impus Major were up and eating, and Z apologized profusely for the night before, even though he didn't particularly remember it. I also learned that of the $200 I'd given Impus Major, the two of them had spent $185. I wouldn't have been too irritated, except Z spent $60 of it on a jacket for himself. I thnk it's just one of those "teen things" I never understood: "Hey, my friend's dad gave him money! I'll spend it on myself!"
Next time, I'll be far more clear on what's OK and what's not OK.
Lon finally woke up around 9:00 am, still not feeling great, so I gave him another 400 mg of ibuprofen, he had a snack, we loaded up the van, and headed up. The drive was pretty uneventful: I was texting both the chaperones and Lon's parents as to where we were, Lon's state, and our ETA. Z's mother D caravaned with us for most of the trip. Impus Major and Z took turns hooking their iDevices to the van's speakers to listen to their music. All kinds of fun watching two teens battle it out for musical supremacy. Even more surreal was getting the texts from the other chaperones that the buses were finally pulling in to Albany. I know I only got 4 1/2 hours of sleep, but it was still pretty weird waving goodbye to everyone, going to bed, getting up, showering, packing, and taking off, and only then starting to get texts of, "We're finally home!"
By 11:30 am when I stopped for gas, Lon was acting downright chipper, and went with Z and Impus Major to buy snacks at the mini mart. We stopped for lunch at the Harris Ranch around 2:00 pm, and, for the first time in my life, I refused to pay for someone (D). She didn't get the hint that I was pretty pissed at her, but she really is a remarkably obtuse woman. I paid for the kids, and it was rather entertaining that Lon's parents had insisted that he loved steak, I was paying, and he got himself a cheeseburger anyway. On the bright side, he wolfed down the whole thing plus a couple of sodas, so he was obviously well on the road to recovery.
A few more hours of driving and we arrived safely back in Albany just before 6 pm, right on schedule. I dropped off Z first, then headed over to Lon's house, only to receive the pounce hug I mentioned at the start. It was gratifying, I got profuse thanks, they offered to pay me for Lon's meal (a $12 cheeseburger? Don't worry about it!), and I was headed home.
I finally pulled the van up to my house around 6:15 pm and headed in, satisfied with a trip well-run.

So, I'm walking the dog, we're minding our own business, and we see two bunnies. So the dog gets into stalking position and the two bunnies hop a few feet further away and start f!$%ing. So the dog, he just sits down to watch them, and they just stare at us and keep f~$%ing.
So that's what I'm doing, trying not to watch two bunnies f+&@ing.

Which was not my only takeaway from your choir campaign narratives, truly.
It just strikes me that anyone putting in that much effort and that much of himself to take care of these kids deserves to start his morning with a decent mugful.

You're a pretty sweet guy, my dude - in both the "you're so sweet!" and the, "you're totally sweeeet!" senses!
Also: I can't really comprehend the idea of spending $60 of someone else's money (that was given to them by yet someone else for food) for... anything, really, much less a jacket for myself. That represents quite an alien bit of thought.
Glad to hear how everyone made it safely, though!

Well, the kid who has been picking on my kid at school decided to pick on someone else yesterday, and decided to throw a little girl's brand new shoes into a toilet he had just used.
I fished them out and threw them straight into a basin of hot soapy water and gave the boy an earful. Thankfully my Japanese co-teacher was the one who spoke to the girl's dad at pick-up. That's the kind of chat I hate the most. And when the boy's dad came to get him, he went straight to his dad and volunteered *everything*. Didn't hold back. Dad was the quiet kind of angry.
The sad thing is, as much of an a+&#@+# as this kid can be, he's actually one of my favorite students. He's smart and funny and can be very sweet.

I'm confused as to why you refer to your father as your neighbor first.
Like...my thought would be - "I borrow the WiFi from my dad - he lives next door," - as if the priority of the relationship would be the blood, and not the proximity.

For those with game systems, and especially Play Stations, what are your experiences with off-brand controllers? I've been reading Amazon reviews, and the off-brand ones range from "total crap" to "just as good as name brand." And after writing a paper a couple years past on how companies can manipulate each others' online reviews and ratings -- basically fake news applied to the 'free' market -- I find it difficult to trust anything I read online anyway.
I need three more controllers, and given that I can potentially get four off-brand ones for the price of a single Sony, I could do just that and figure that even if one of them is bad I've still got four total left over. But I don't want to be buying replacement controllers this time next year, either.
Aaaargh, please advise!!!

My history is checkered, with the classic "you get what you pay for":
As always, everyone's going for the lowest-common-denominator, cheapest-possible manufacturing.
But from my personal experience with "generics" vs. "the real thing", for the PS4 I'd go generic. For PS3 I'd go genuine.

I wanted to rampage through a bunch of not pathfinder goblins but they look and act like pathfinder goblins so I could find the book that'll whisk me away to a land of frisky tentacles, giant unnecessarily violent fishmen, and two dozen ghosts of Skekzi's past (or whatever the evil vulture Muppets from The Crystal Shard were called) but the dog had other ideas.
