Was planning to take him to the movies tonight, but not sure what to go see. Kung Fu Panda 2 is already done at the theater. Green Lantern would be way too scary for him. And I'm not recommending anyone see Transformers 3. The reviews have been pretty universally awful: not as bad as TF2, but not by much.
TF2 was pretty bad for reasons that go beyond my beloved Bayslposioness. I'm keeping an open mind for 3- GL was poorly reviewed as well, but I found it to be more bland than anything else- and I went in there expecting to get a new flavor of Haterade out of it. What did you think of TF2?

Not having seen any of the movies and going "Eurgh" at YouTube videos of the animated series:
I heard a review on Fresh Air that said, basically, if you can get past Bay's sexism and gigantism (FX), it's not a bad movie.
Is TF2 a candidate for your hate?

I think tales of Bay's sexism are a bit overblown, although he can be juvenile when women appear on screen. And no, the TF series is not something I haterate upon- I love it, and eagerly defend it against its detractors. Then again, I am strange to many in that I wholeheartedly despise the "No (insert movie/comic/book/game here) is better than this particular (insert movie/comic/book/game here)" movement because I strongly feel that if you think you can do a better job, well..do it. Especially in this age of blogging and youtube.

My dislike of the current Transformers franchise has nothing to do with nostalgia for the old series. I just think that Bay creates movies that have no merit, even as a supposed "leave your brain at the door" movie.

After about half an hour of searching, I can't find any concrete evidence that Joss Whedon has stolen from anime. Perhaps it's just all been done.

A tempting and insidious trap to fall into, as most of the people at TV Tropes are HUGE Whedon fans. On a scream-sheet level, here's what I've managed to piece together over the years...
Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Several elements of Devil Hunter Yohko, a few characters from Ghost Sweeper Mikami.
Firefly- The amalgamation of Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop.
Dollhouse- Gunslinger Girl and at least one other series that slips my mind.

The issue I have with this theory is that I know that there are plenty of times I've come up with an (I thought) original idea only to have someone tell me it was just like such and such manga or anime that I had never seen. And that's not even taking into account the things that were inspired by (but not identical to) stuff I got from manga and anime I am familiar with. Knowing how often that happens to me, well, I'm just not buying it. Honestly this is a big piece of why writing became unfun to me. Having to always try so hard to be 'original' is exhausting.

Yep, I saw most of those on various forums. But no interviews or articles with Joss Whedon about whether or not he watches anime. That's what I was looking for. I tried searching "Joss Whedon on anime" and "Does Joss Whedon steal from anime?" I looked on his Wikipedia page (using the Find tool on pretty much every page I visited for "anime") and his TVTropes page. I saw a lot of fanchildren saying "If you like x, then you'll probably like y." Some forums said Joss Whedon stole from anime, but others had people saying people were trolling their fourms saying that. Some forums said Joss Whedon doesn't even watch anime.
I did find a pretty rabid "Rapist's View of Firefly" rant by a (perhaps trolling) lesbian (if it matters) black (if it matters) feminist. (I'm actually leaning to the view that it was trolling, but you never know.)
Re the "trap:" No one on TVTropes suggested that. It was my own trap. (And a quote from a song, which was [perhaps unwittingly] semi-quoting the Bible.)
So far, to me, it's inconclusive. But then I've always liked Firefly and Angel. (Note I didn't say Buffy. It could get quite stupid at times.)

So you can find some people claiming copy cat status, but lets face it, most tropes are tropes because they have in fact been done before.

It's up there with all those books and films that supposedly stole from Star Wars. Those plot elements have been around for hundreds of years. In thousands of years of recorded history, I find it hard to believe even those animes are "original" on close examination.

I do find it funny that anime is seen as a source of fresh, original ideas.
