Addiction is a complex beast. The basics are: When you drink too much, you start needing more eventually. Part of it is that your body learns to handle more alcohol, but your brain also produces more receptors for it. When you quit, all those receptors are what gives you the urge to drink - you get anxiety if you don't. After a few weeks or months, this stops. The receptors are hidden away, but they remain. They always do.

And they stay away, until you next get in contact with alcohol. The truly sad part here is that the mechanism is extremely sensitive. As little as the SMELL of alcohol could potentially trigger all the receptors coming back online. See, since alcohol is a low-weight liquid at room temperature, there are clouds of it everywhere people drink, and it always smells. And if you do smell enough of it, or if you take a drink, you WILL end up exactly where you were before you quit last time.

So, the only way to be safe is not to be even close to it.

The compassionate part of the message is that it's biochemical. It doesn't happen because you're a weak or bad person. Alcohol addiction is a medical condition.

I agree with everything this man says in this video.

Now, where is my copy of Heroquest...Oh well, doesn't matter. One of my friends has about 5 copies. I'll just 'borrow' one of his.

On the earlier topic of drinking, I sell alcohol for a living, so I do of course drink. I do have a disdain of people who conflate heavy drinking with being a badass or a real man or whatever, and show scorn on people who moderate themselves or know their limits. I don't get what's so impressive about acting like a hyper aggressive moron as you get steadily bombed, then basically falling apart.

I have a living recovering alcoholic father. Does that count? Or can I at least substitute my dead alcoholic grandmother? She's a real terror, though.

Do you drink coffee or eat eggs? Coffee grounds, old (cold) coffee, and egg shells are good for tomatoes.* Especially the eggshells, the calcium helps prevent the black rot in the ends of the tomato fruit from calcium deficiency.**

* Apologies if you already know this.

** Most hybrid tomato strains are much more resistant to this than heirloom varieties, from my experience anyway.

He's not the only one: thanks!

I'm impressed that Western RPGs are dominating recently.

It's funny, though, I do disagree with the idea that menu-based combat isn't engaging - I actually enjoy combat more with a menu (so long as it's paused while I select stuff).

But the three videos were pretty great!

This was extremely helpful, because this describes me to a 'T'. It wasn't depression or self-loathing that drove me, but anxiety.

A typical day would be:

  • Get up, take care of morning stuff, get the kids out the door, map out my day at work. Since I'm an overachiever, this would always be an "ideal" day assuming no distractions or interruptions.
  • Inevitably, I'd get interrupted by someone or something. And I'd stress about it. And I'd realize that I was really way TOO stressed for the situation.
  • The solution, of course, was to have a couple of shots of rum. Just two. Not enough to be incoherent; heck, barely enough to be over the legal limit. But enough to calm my nerves and get me focused again.
  • Of course, alcohol works its way out of your system fairly quickly, so a couple of hours later I'd start feeling anxious again, and I'd need another shot. Repeat ad nauseum.

  • Over the course of a 9-hour work day (including lunch), this means roughly 4-5 shots of rum. At 92 proof, that's 2.76-3.45 ounces of pure alcohol, or roughly 80-102 mL for you furriners every single day, 5 days a week. Plus I'd have a good strong drink to start my gaming day on weekends (a 3-shot gin & tonic), putting my grand total at around 30 drinks a week.

That's a heck of a lot of alcohol for ANYONE to be consuming.

But notice that it was (almost) always moderated, (almost) always done over hours, so no one around me was the wiser that I was drinking that much booze.

But it's amazing how much better you start feeling a couple of weeks after you quit. It's just getting through those first two weeks that's the nightmare...

Denmark, known in Sweden for a very liberal view of alcohol, possibly unfairly so, has a Health authority that suggests the following:

A man who drinks more than 21 glasses of alcohol, 14 for women, per week, probably has alcohol issues.

I find these numbers ridiculously high, of course, but it's a hint of some kind.

The good news is that if you stop drinking, your body will get itself into shape pretty well over a few months, and so many of its systems will be well calibrated again. Stuff that didn't work properly in metabolism, neurologic activity, coordination, and so on.

Oh, I *knew* it was excessive. The self-justifications are just WAAAAAAY too easy. "I never drink enough to get drunk. 4 drinks over 9 hours really isn't that bad, etc."

You just have to stop justifying, stop drinking, and call it quits.

And I love the people who say, "Just stop." It's kind of like the people who say, "Yeah, you can stop being fat! Just eat less and exercise more!"

If it were that easy, substance abuse and obesity wouldn't be issues...

I myself noticed that I was not relaxed when I had one or two drinks, The anxiety got worse making me crave more alcohol. I was talking to a friend and fellow alcoholic the other day and he said.

Me and you could sit down and have 5 or 10 screwdrivers, Mimosas, champagne for brunch or maybe 12 beers at a party right

    Me:Sure I said not a problem

He then said "Would you ever consider having 5 or 10 glasses of OJ at brunch or drink 12 sodas at a party"

Me: No way, that's insane and kind of gross

I never felt the calming effect of the alcohol so I feel no need to reach for it to "calm my nerves". This is mirrored by fact that I never been able to notice the stimulating effect of coffee or energy drinks. I had at time but rarely felt some stimulation from caffeinated drinks such as Pepsi or Coke, but it might be the effect of all the sugar within...

The alcoholic buzz reminds me mostly of motion sickness which is annoying and hated bane of mine since I was the small kid.

Alcoholism is a tendency from both sides of my family; I appear to have dodged that particular bent, though. Lucky me.

That being said, I do enjoy beer and bourbon. I've even been known to knock back an Irish Car Bomb or two ( . . . or four in ten minutes . . . . And that was nigh-disastrous). But I don't think I'm an alcoholic . . . . I probably average 6 - 10 beers a month (bourbon, rum, vodka, etc. are usually at a holiday event 2-shot maximum), so I'm clear by Denmark's standards . . . .

    Now if I could just quit smoking . . . . sigh

How is she focused on scoring melee hits, STR or DEX? Will she be going crit-fishing and/or power-attacking?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Most likely weapon finesse crit fishing. It's so hard to build for strength with Halflings.

    Her stats as a Ranger
    Str: 12 Dex: 18 Con: 15 Int: 13 Wis: 13 Cha: 14

Edit: at first level I'll probably take weapon finesse, two weapon fighting at second, then weapon focus in whatever at third.

I'd go twin kukris or twin daggers. While only 1d3, Small shortswords are only 1d4 with a smaller crit range, Small wakizashis aren't worth the ewp feat. You can't dual rapiers efficiently, and mixed (rapier + something else) halves the effectiveness of any weapon specific feats she takes. Dual daggers might be better than dual kukris with something like River Rat trait. Maybe go switchhitter ranger (bow as primary weapon, switching to dual daggers/kukris for melee.)

If you don't need to stay pure ranger, 3 levels of unchained rogue will get you weapon finesse at 1st, evasion at 2nd, and finesse damage at 3rd with either daggers or kukris (but not both).

Just spitballing here, haven't crunched the math (which I hate), but should be close.

Tammy's not safe for PFS. I don't usually use 3pp but only because PDFs annoy me, but I'm open to whatever. I don't use Unchained, I'm a bit of a contrarian and don't think it's necessary, I looked it over and wasn't impressed.

I was thinking of taking a level in fighter, just for exotic weapons or whatnot.

What about the ninja from Ultimate Combat? I think the ki pool from 2 levels of ninja is better and more versatile than evasion from a core rogue. Ninja, or however you want to flavor the class for Tammy's ethnicity & locality of halfing, is better offensively just from the available ki powers and can still take most core rogue archetypes. You could stop at 2 levels of ninja and still take ninja tricks (& rogue talents) with odd-level character feats. The ninja weapon list includes the kusarigama (sickle and chain), which is a finessable dual weapon with reach; you can also grapple or trip with it, but I'm not sure you want to burn feats on either combat maneuver; the dirty fighting feat chain is usually better. Also, with a reach weapon, picking up ranged weapon feats is less critical, and you could stick with TWF as your ranger style.

Captain, if I may, I'd suggest you veer away from Ranger (or Slayer) for your two-weapon warrior. The reason is that rangers and slayers can ignore prerequisites for feats, so they're uniquely suited for strength-based.

Dex-based is better suited, in my opinion, to work well for classes that offer bonus damage but do require using regular feats with the prerequisite Dex you already have, such as ninjas, rogues, paladins, etc.

Personally, I would think an unchained rogue would do well. I would take the dagger master archetype, the one trait that offers +1 damage with daggers, and dual-wield daggers. Dagger master really makes up for the small size by jumping your sneak attack up to 1d8, and then of course unchained rogue lets you add dex to damage, and is the only way to pull that off with two weapons (that I can think of) as the "grace" feats all require you to have an empty off hand.

It would also work with a regular rogue, but you wouldn't get that sweet dex-to-damage.

Paladin would also do nicely, due to the bonus damage from smite, if you wanna just charge in and murder stuff.

(A paladin doesn't work for Tammy. Willingly, anyway.)

Well, yeah, I mean the primary was the whole unchained rogue suggestion.

Anything with bonus damage would work, though. Like, you could do a swashbuckler and two-weapon with anything that leaves your off-hand open, like unarmed strikes, or a boot blade.
