Further Examples of Why I am not Lawful Good:
The County library's computer system will not let you renew "new" books online, the rationale being that everyone ought to get a chance to read them.
But, if you walk into the library with the book and go to a self-check kiosk, you can "return" the book and then check it out again, and to heck with anyone else who really wanted the new Gregory Maguire. Which--and this is only a random guess--in this town is probably no one. And I also picked up the second Jasper Fforde book, because I am years behind on my reading list. But at least our library is full of Books That No One Cares About But Me.
Not having a current knitting or sewing project means I can actually read instead of streaming pirated audiobooks on YouTube.

The Thursday Next series, I'm guessing? I read those last year for the first time and loved them. Might re-read them sometime soon.

Yes! Whingey Wizzard gave me a copy of The Eyre Affair after three different friends told him I would love it. (I did.)

It's taken me this long to get around to picking up the sequel, because I couldn't find an audio copy.

There something mesmerizing about the sheer belly-aching, inflated egos, vigorous finger-wagging, glaring entitlement, haughty patronising, feeble pleading, snobbish derision, constant teeth-grinding and passive-aggressive sniping of the Play-test forums (ie the perpetual noise-machine).

So, NobodysWife, Shiro, and I went off to see Ready Player One last night. After pans both here and from Impus Major, I expected to be woefully unimpressed.

Instead, it was an unabashedly goofy tour through my childhood. The sheer number of game, toy, and movie references targeted at those of us who were children of the 70s was overwhelming. The in-game scenes were chaotic and goofy and borderline epileptic-inducing, but it all worked for me.

From the reviews I've read, this is actually the problem.

The basic complaint I've seen from multiple articles is "World is saved by kid with encyclopedic knowledge of White Male Demographic targeted pop culture ephemera of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, while basically acting as if everything outside of 'White Male Demographic targeted pop cultural ephemera' of those eras basically didn't exist".

Yep. That's the movie.

No Shiro game today, so we went and saw Rampage, which was utterly and completely stupid.

And yet the main villain was so much more intelligent and believable, with a better-hatched plan, that I longed for said villain to do a crossover into Ready Player One.

So yeah, Rampage is everything you'd expect from a, "Hey! People are watching movies based on video games! Crank out another one, pronto! And get a big star to attract a bigger audience," cookie-cutter mindless summer action flick.

Have 4 beers. Sit back. Enjoy it for the stupid silly spectacle it is. But even NobodysWife, who loves her some Sharknado said, "Yeah, when they gave Ralph xxx it was a little over-the-top for me."

I didn't hate it. It entertained me for a couple of hours. If someone invited me to watch it again for free, I'd go. It's not dreadful. But don't walk into Rampage thinking it's anything other than what it is: A cheap Hollywood attempt to cash out on another video game they got the rights to.

(I still want to see the Simpson's epic "Tic Tac Toe: The Movie".)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I've watched all the ads. Other than knowing nothing about the villain I feel like I've seen everything the movie has to offer.

Part of the fun of the Rampage games for me was how over-the-top anti-corporatist it was. All the monsters are supposed to be humans transformed by <insert product name here, it changes from game to game> because of some reaction to the unsafe chemicals used in their creation. The games' narrators tend to be scientists or secretaries from said company reporting to The Boss on your progress and results between levels. Etc. etc. etc.

It's ridiculous and silly and basically just a vehicle to point you into playing giant smashy monster and I love it.

But of course can't be quite THAT on the nose with a Hollywood flick....

Honestly, I only ever played the original video game and I'll say that in terms of remaining true to the "plot", they did better than I'd have expected for such a cynical cash grab.

But I hadn't known the movie existed until someone in the theater yesterday said, "I'm thinking of going to see Rampage," and I thought, "Oh, I wish you wouldn't."

But NobodysWife really wanted to see it, and we saw it, and since Shiro didn't have a game ready I suppose it was probably at least as entertaining as a few rounds of Hanabi. Maybe...

I'm going to watch rampage tomorrow. I've not seen the show yet, but if you say it's good, I'll take your word for it.

I'm not a very critical audience so I don't comment too much about villian idiot balls.

I've not played the game.

Just a weird thought.

Strange Aeons:

Lowls’s plot is kinda all over the place. But maybe part of it was my fault, since I was doing a PC insert in book 2.I realized that only when I was trying to give my player a summary through his journal. He talked to Zandalus to learn about Neruzavin, then got the PCs hired to get gifts for the Mad Poet, then dropped them in the asylum after he was done with them.
He dropped the chains of night off so no one could follow his footsteps after that since the Shatterman would kill everyone in the asylum. Yeah I think the problem was because in the best of intentions, I tried to insert a PC in book 2, and so I ran it that that PC was their senior in Lowls service(since the Dreamland scene at the end doesn't make sense if they're not in the same boat) and that he found the mad Poet and the Mad Poet said one wasn't enough, get me 4 more. Just another reason why I really shouldn't be tampering with APs. Don't pay enough attention to details and the chronology comes out wrong.

Also due to the trauma, I haven't reread my Strange Aeons campaign as much as Reign of Winter so it wasn't that clear. Sort of trying to block things out of my mind, so to speak.

My left smallest toe. It's a seventh-level cleric of Freehold.

I have no idea how that works either. I just know it casts random Inflicts on me when I get it too close to certain pieces of furniture.

What sort of oath does one have to take in order to become a paladin of Freehold?

Are there any special restrictions, or do we not wanna go down that road?

They would either be lawfully chaotic or chaotically lawful. Of course there is always order out of chaos.
