Gaaargh.

Just steal Shiro's player's. Everyone else does! :-P

Or then again, maybe not... getting access to someone else's is the surest road to feeling like you need to order it yourself. We used his Amazon Prime for maybe 6 months (hard to call it "stealing" when he was always over watching it with us), then realized we REALLY needed it for ourselves for Christmas so we could get free 2-day shipping for all the stuff for the kids.

And now we are utterly addicted.

Curse you, Amazon Prime!

I don't want to take advantage of Shiro. I still feel guilty that he special-ordered an entire case of the wrong soda to surprise me.

Yeah, Whingey Wizard got it a year ago on some promotional deal and it goes away after Tuesday. Which means I have five more days to binge-watch the last of series 9, which I've been avoiding because I'm trying to hold off on the 12th Doctor/River Song Christmas Special for the same reason I have one last unread Pratchett novel on my bookshelf.

Gods. After sending the e-mail blast-o-doom at my players, I was really looking forward to trying to re-invigorate the Crimson Throne game by trying to get all the other players involved and interested again, and trying to shut down Mr. "I'd like to take 95% of the GM/game session time, please!"

I was really feeling optimistic.

Then over the last couple of days I've received a series of the classic, min-maxing, "What can I possibly do to get myself even more actions per turn, in spite of the fact that I am already paralyzed by my existing choices?"

And now I'm worried about the game again.

Ah, well. I've given myself carte blanche to be mean. I'll see whether it's possible to shut him down in person. Assuming, of course, any of my other players are still invested enough to try to do things beyond, "Killed that, what's next?"

Time, as always, will tell.

OK. We're not THAT bad. We absolutely try to divvy things up so he and I are roughly 50/50 (Hi's player pops in on occasion so now it's closer to 50/40/10), but it is really fun to occasionally suggest ridiculous things to him and have him say, "Sure! Why not?"

Speaking of things for which I really should be expressing gratitude, at the kids' table last week:
NH: So you DID all read the e-mail about rules arguments and whatnot, right?
Kid: Right, and you're retiring from GM'ing...
Entire kids' table looks like their favorite pet was just run over by the school bus.
NH: Correct. Except this game. I feel this game is fundamentally important to all of you, so, while I'd rather see someone else run it (I'm looking at YOU, Impus Minor), I will be involved, and I will ensure this game keeps running.

The look of palpable relief on all the kids' faces really made my week.

I love running for those wacky, poor-planning kids and their tendency to get NPCs and their fellow players killed!

(For those who don't follow the thread, of roughly 12 PC deaths, at least 7 have been directly attributable to ill-thought-out behavior by other PCs. Of the 8 friendly NPCs who could travel with the party, 7 died and the only one who lived didn't tag along with them. And by failing to investigate an attack on a neighboring camp, you could call them responsible for the deaths of around 30 people in their own camp. Knowing the kids' party is dying because of the kids' party...)

EDIT: Except the bad guys. Those darned kids have me stuck with FOUR recurring bad guys. Because letting bad guys get away is what they DO.

I don't have my remaining legos at hand at the moment (they are somewhere here, but I would have to dig them out of the other things), but I vaguely recall that would prevent fitting figures next to each other - the legs of a classic humanoid figure occupy two pegs and the figure will (probably) need extra space to fit its arms around.

Unless Dungeon Master Lego set uses different scale or build?

So: it's that update time!

I know you've all been desperate to know...

"What show is TL going to talk about now?!"

The 100

As of Season 2:

I find the struggle to survive against all odds, no matter what, a continually fascinating thing.

It's interesting, and really makes a great deal more sense than I would have thought.

There are a number of decisions that people make that are, on a meta-level, made for the sheer drama and purely for the continuance-or-establishment of more conflict and the series, as well as the "surprise factor" of people seemingly changing their ways, or whatever...

... but it's always done with an eye toward comprehensible, if not-always-good character development, and it's believable within the show itself.

In that, at least, it compares favorably to things like Roswell (with character choices that almost just come out of nowhere, sometimes, comparatively; sure it fit with their "identity" but some of it was just bizarre, at best).

It's also interesting to witness despair and pain, and how people respond to that.

One interesting side-effect is the idea that it becomes really, really hard to willingly sacrifice your life a second time.

That may seem obvious - once you've sacrificed your life, you're usually dead. But one "thing" about this series is that people definitely (not always, but definitely) have "plot armor" as it were, and tend to live through such valor.

And then it comes time to do it again, and they... hesitate.

And, you know, it makes a lot of sense.

No on has said these words, but, "I already did this once, and it hurt, and I really don't want to do it again." makes a lot of daggum sense, especially when the over-all goal is to survive. Again, no one has said this, but it's probably associated with, "Why doesn't someone else take a turn?"

And this is fundamentally human. It's not only a good thing, but it's an important thing. But then it slams up against these extreme circumstances, and you suddenly have to ask, "What is morality, why do we have it, and what does it do for us?"

Being good and avoiding evil is clearly important to these people.

But what is that?

Is dying for someone again and again good?

What about dying for the sake of a people who threaten to murder yours?

Do you kill people who (try to) kill you?

What about those who (try to, or do) kill your people?

When all of humanity is on the brink, who is "your people" and who could they be considered?

Why do wars happen, when are they justified, and how do you know or interpret violent moments, and people who sue for peace?

... and what, exactly, do you do any violent act for? What is worth it? What isn't worth it?

And, again, what is the moral choice? What does it mean to make the right decisions? When both "wisdom" and "survival" conflict with "righteousness" it must be asked, "Which is better, now?"

And, you know, people make the wrong choices. They make them all the daggum time. They make them whether I'm informed of the dramatic irony or not.

But they work to survive. And it's interesting that, even as I hate some of the villains of the show, I can respect and understand their motives.

Also, you know, teenagers tend to adopt attitudes and habits from their friends that they spend lots of time with, so. That makes a lot of sense.

Anyway, over-all it's a good show. Very solid.

And while I'm waxing poetical about ribs and other things, I must admit, I am absolutely, positively a "Childian" -- a worshipper of Julia Child's beliefs on cooking:

Julia Child, Mastering the Art of French Cooking wrote:
This is a book for the servantless American cook who can be unconcerned on occasion with budgets, waistlines, ...or anything else which might interfere with the enjoyment of producing something wonderful to eat.

I roast a chicken. It takes me nearly 2 hours of basting every 8 minutes, then a desperate scramble at the end to ensure the browning is even and crisp, the mashed potatoes are delightful, and the vegetables are crisp and pleasant, rather than cooked to mush.

And everyone critiques me, and asks, "Why do you spend so much time in the kitchen? My brother/aunt/cousin showed me a time-saving technique that would get you out of the kitchen in under half the time..."

...and then says, "Oh, my goodness! This is the BEST roast chicken I've EVER had! Even from restaurants!"

And I bask. And I glow warmly. And I know that roasting something at 325, basting in delightful butters, fats, and assorted boozes every few minutes for a 2-3 hour cooking time, will produce something no mass-food-production facility can replicate.

Whee!

And I'm halfway through Cowboy Bebop on Hulu, and it's definitely one of those, "Wow, I can see why this was so incredibly popular series" shows. It sets a lot of standards or introduces a lot of themes that are, unfortunately, commonplace today.

So I'd call it:
- Groundbreaking for its time
- On the positive side of "mediocre" for modern times.

I'm enjoying it, and I'll definitely watch it to the end, but it's not the mind-blower it must have been when it was first released.

I *do* love seeing SO many things that have become "standards of gritty anime" that were clearly introduced in the series. It sure as heck deserves a HUGE amount of credit.

But if (as I have) you've been watching modern anime for the last nearly-20-years since its release, its "datedness" really shows.

Good show. Groundbreaking for its time. Not blowing my mind now.

EDIT: And for those wondering, I am *soooooo* Jet it's not even funny. "Stay on the ship, keep everyone else focused, and feed the dog."

I like to have my errors pointed out to me so I can correct them.

I was surprised what that particular word was doing there - I think I rewrote that sentence once or twice but I don't recall "less" fitting in any way there... Have I put in the initial sentence "unless" that got maimed and left dying during the rewrites?

Yup. 4 x 4 is right for traditional figures. And the horse fits 8 x 8 just fine (actually it would fit 4 x 8 if anyone would like to go back to 3.0 edition creature spaces and facing).

So, including the corn on the cob, potato salad, and grilled asparagus, there will be... plenty...

EDIT: Yes, I admit, I take great delight in having one of my group on FaWtL. I keep pointing NobodysWife and Shiro's player here, but they show up so rarely you wouldn't recognize them... except for the Lulu outfit, of course...

He's running Wrath of the Righteous. All the monsters pretty much exist so that a player can roll a die and say, "OK, I did... 2238 points of damage. It dies."

The NPCs exist to say, "My hero!"

Maybe next AP...

2 people marked this as a favorite.

*reviews monsters*

None of them is particularly suitable to withstanding 2238 points of damage either...

I should probably write some more tricky ones... Or simply mythic.

*reviews NPCs from own blog*

Yeah... I don't think any of them is particularly suitable to saying "My hero!"

*makes a note about empty niche among NPCs posted*

My favorite indictment of Wrath of the Righteous ever came from Shiro and NobodysWife.

She got home, telling me they'd just finished the most epic battle EVER in the AP, and it was SO cool, and they'd finally fought a creature that had lasted several rounds, and put up a really good fight...

...the next morning, Shiro's player confided that he had given the monster 10x hit points, +10 AC, +10 to hit, +10 damage per attack, +10 to all saves, 10x its standard regeneration, and an extra action per round. (The mythic initiative that gives you two turns per round instead of 1.)

Just to make it competitive. And it STILL lost.

Yeah, that's an... interesting AP right there...
