I've figured out way too many alternatives. That's my issue - I come up with so many ideas it's hard to settle.
Once I start playing a character I actually get into it, but during theorycrafting, I just crank out so many I get indecisive.
The party has:
A human dex-based swashbuckler with fencing grace and a rapier
A human dex-based warpriest with a whip and slashing grace focused on tripping.
A half-elf archery-based slayer
A tiefling bomb-focused alchemist with healing bombs and infusions to help the warpriest on healing
Probably an admixture evoker wizard (new player)
Probably a bard or skald (new player)
So then, there's me, putting something in, 'cause my last character (a strength-based half-elf hexcrafter magus) died, and it's pretty obvious they're short on the "strength" side of things.

Honestly, with all the threads I've seen, I think Unchained breaks more then it fixes. :-)
Actually, unchained rogue is pretty rock solid and the badly needed upgrade the Pathfinder rogue has needed. It can actually hold its own with the melee-ers, assuming you don't try to tank alone. I wish there'd been a Str-focused unchained rogue, and I think the skill unlocks are underpowered for the ranks you have to sink into them, but otherwise, it's good to go. Probably the best part of the book (IMO).

I was rather disappointed that my "determined to be a good paladin but unclear on the concept" 15-year-old player finally realized that he'd promised to release a Chaotic Evil demon-worshipping cleric as soon as he was done exploring the parts of the city she once ruled. (I was going to write "exploring her conquered regions", but on FaWtL that's just asking for trouble.)
The expressions on his face as he worked it all out were priceless. "If I let her go, then I've unleashed a demon-worshipping cleric on the world, and Iomedae will hate me, and I'll fall. If I don't release her, then Iomedae, as a goddess of honor, will hate me, and I'll fall..."
He finally came up with the idea of releasing her, then killing her. Considering the corner he's painted himself into, it's really not a bad solution, as long as he warns her, gives her time to prep, and then tracks her down and kills her. "I promised I'd let you go, and I will be true to that promise. But in our time together I have learned that you are a vile vermin who needs to be exterminated. So once you have been free for 24 hours, I will stop at nothing to track you down and destroy you."
I actually kind of like it.

I like it too. It's great drama, and also a great demonstration of why NG is the goodest good. A NG hero doesn't have to compromise the protection of innocents with honor.
"I promised I'd let you go, but that was before I knew you were a scum-of-the-earth villain. So that's why I killed you immediately and without hesitation, before setting you loose on who-knows-how-many innocents." Much less dramatic than your player's solution, but also much Gooder. ;)

I don't care how tough the soles of your feet are, you look ridiculous, and it's disgusting and unhygienic.
the halflings in my campaign setting wear shoes. They are famous for them actually.
Hobbit feet are for Tolkien. Leave them with Tolkien. No, your setting is not more old school because Tolkien. It's more Tolkien because you are going Tolkien.
