I got my Advanced Player's Guide right after it came out when a guy gave us a hundred dollars each for taking our time and not cutting through his cable and phone (our boss assumed it would be cheaper for us to use a trencher, cut through everything get the drain pipe in and then have the repairman fix it afterwards) we still came out under the bid.

Good times!

Edit: D'oh!

The sad part is, I specifically looked before that first post to make sure I wasn't going to be naked, and it happened anyway.

Typical.

Magic item creation question time: Can you add enchantments onto magic items.

For example, Pea Bear has a +1 Chainsaw, could she then have the party Wizard add Shocking or Shocking Burst to it.

That's a FaWtL post???

You're asking for flaming bikes, mister!

But yeah, I *always* allow people to add enchantments to an already-existing magic item. Otherwise they burn gold selling the old one and buying the new one.

So NobodysHome gives the idea a +1.

+1 Shocking (/Burst) Chainsaw??!!

Inferno Affirmative!!

I'm usually overgenerous with loot and such in my own games, so my players usually don't mind paying the 1.5x to add the mods. But, then, my games might involve BBEG-reanimated firebreathing demon skulls attacking the party from inside their own fortress before a horde of frostfell ghoul harpies descend upon their battlements, so . . . . Great risk, great reward kindathing.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think as long as it doesn't involve alignment, Paladins, or telling people they're doing it wrong I'll avoid the flaming bikes.

But yes, my thoughts exactly, just couldn't find if it was covered in the rules in either CRB or UE.

Thanks!

Yes, it's generally allowed (though some GMs interpret otherwise because of fear - sometimes justified - of power gamers).

In 3.5e the answer was yes.
The cost would be the difference between a +1 chainsaw and the +1 shocking (burst?) chainsaw.

TFY's crafting rules. If you have the feat and the cash, congrats you made the item.

I don't see why she could not, The cost would be 4k for shock or 9k for shocking burst

I think this is the first time they've wanted to craft or upgrade anything other than wondrous magic items, with an emphasis on footwear and clothing.

But yeah, Pea Bear has been eyeing the Chainsaw since I got the technology guide. Also since she saw me using one cleaning up after a storm.

Edit: But especially the Death ray. Man does she want a Death ray.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

To be fair, I, also, want a death ray. Probably not for villainous purposes. (Unless you're an ant, roach, or germs that negatively afflict human beings. Muwahahahahahah~!)

Items tend to be unaffected by mind-affecting items so no enchantments on them...

Kingmaker Spoilers:
The tendelucuous(sp? - the fungus monster in book 2) is WAY too powerful to be CR6. 3 attacks at +11, +6, +6, with paralysis, grab, a ton of damage (for the level) AND swallow whole?

My 5th level party was WRECKED! I had one death, 2 characters in negative HP, 1 paralyzed, and one had literally her last spell left to do the killing blow.

Now I have to deal with one player baby pouting because this is his second character death. I told him he could have his old character rezzed and have been on a year vacation since then, you know, due to not dying, but that was it. I'm not going to pull my punches because he is used to godmode or videogames where strategy doesn't matter.

Every couple of years I go on a 'I want to build/design/etc' magical items and weapons. (I have to start from almost scratch each time. My memory) ;P

AS far as I recall, you can add to any magical item after it is created. Weapons seem to be the easiest due to the fact that pretty much anything you can have them do is lined up, spelled out, and cost is already calculated. :)

IIRC, the cost you pay to upgrade a '+1 weapon' to a '+1 Weapon of flame burst' is the cost of the second weapon, MINUS the cost of the first (which you already own.) Taking into account that every +# (whether actual bonus or ability) the cost increases exponentially. :)

I am unfamiliar with the 'Cost 1.5' to add additional ability? (Unless they are talking about the exponential cost increase per +#?)

Ah there I go again.
Short answer- My understanding is YES. :)

Short answer- My understanding is YES. :)

This is basically correct.

The "1.5" cost is only added for stacking multiple different abilities, per directions in the general magic item pricing rules. If any other pricing table applies, use that instead.

But to explain it, turning a +1 sword into a +2 flaming burst sword only costs the price difference of increasing the "+" (so finding the price for a +2 flaming burst longs word, then subtracting 2,000 gold from that price, as it was already a +1).

On the other hand turning a ring of sustenance (2,500) into a ring of sustenance and protection +1 would cost 3,000 gold. Why? Because the ring is the recipient of mutiple different abilities, and the 2,000 cost of the ring of protection +1 is increased to 3,000 (2k*1.5=3k). The ring, in total, would now be 5,500 good value.

No matter what, though, it's the lower cost that gets increased. So taking a ring of protection +1 (2k) and adding the benefits of a ring of sustenance (2.5k) only costs 3.5k, for a 5.5k total, just like before.

It gets a liiiiitle complex when you start adding things like improving a +1 protection to a +2, but the same formula and principle applies. A ring +2 costs 8k, so the increased cost would be the "lesser" 2.5k of the sustenance effect. So, first step, determine the price of the ring of protection+2 and sustenance. That's an 8k plus 3.75k (2.5k*1.5) = 11.75k total. You've spent 5.5k, so you need to expend 6.25k to improve your ring (11.75k-5.5k).
This pretty neatly lines up mathematically, for those who care. You already paid the extra '.5' to the 2k, so since your former higher price, 2.5k, is now your lower price, the difference is the .5k: so you just needed a .25k (.5k*.5) 'tax' to what would otherwise be a 6k increase to go from a +1 to a +2. I apologize for nothing.

Similarly, price increases would apply to other books, such as spell effect replication.

Anyway, I hope that helps clarify stuff!

Uh, I'm fine? We're driving. What happened?
