I don't think she quite understands the depth of how stressed I've been.

I've been considering cancelling a lot lately. I'm pretty stressed out from work, buying a PoS lemon car, and three infections in two weeks.

I don't know if I can handle the stress of a kid with issues on top of that.

It's been a long road to get this far, with 9 weeks of classes and paperwork like you wouldn't believe, but I figure it's better to cancel now than find out it's too much for me and have a poor kid bounced to another location along the way. Each placement is supposed to be worse for their sense of security, etc.

I'm just concerned the stress will be too much when you add it to the pile.

its...not easy. This may not be the best time, truth be told. But only you can be the judge of that. If so, DO NOT beat yourself up. It's a major life event and something that, unlike most, you can put off for a few moments. Take the addition to your family on only when you can make it seem like a home, and not a layover.

In Minecraft, Tiny T-Rex has built a tower with a diamond block crest that goes as far up as he could build it.

It has no stairs or ladders.

What he does is fly to the top of the tower, hatches something, then he pushes it off the edge, where it falls to it's death.

I call it The Tower of Kavor

Quick update on me since aeglos asked.

1) I'm doing fine.
2) GenCon 2016 badges purchased and hotel procured. Indy here I come.
3) I've traded insane work hours for insane travel. Just returned from 10 days in China. That was fun, educational, and tiring.
4) Fortunately, we are in a hiring mode at work so I've gotten some help which has given me a little more time. Therefore, more time to post!

Good to see you Tordek, in a fashion. :-)

10 days in China sounds crazy, but in a fun exhausting way.

Did you get to site see.

Or try the local food, my brother's ex-wife hailed from China, she told me some of the crazy s&#$ you can find in street markets there. :-)

Two things:

- 1) I think our search engine no longer functions for FAWTL, as this is the post that comes up for me as "newest" when I do a post search.

- 2) I tried several times last night, but it wouldn't let me post*, and I don't know if I did (as the search isn't working), so: Happy Birthday lynora! (Belated, if I haven't already told you, or repeated, if I have.)

* No, seriously, it would not let me post "Happy Birthday!" - for the record, Syssil had just wished you "Happy Birthday, lynora!" (or something very similar) when I first started, and no matter what little changes, I simply couldn't post it. I don't recall if I ever succeeded, or just forgot and eventually went to sleep. Could be related to my phone? I 'unno. :)

Thanks for birthday wishes, guys. :)
It was a good birthday. Fondue feast was delicious, and I got two Lego architecture sets. Which I promptly put together. I love those things. Although the Trevi fountain model was evil. Wobbly base makes assembly very difficult. But it looks cool now that it's done. :)

Awesome! Those sets look frustrating (but very, very fun), which one other then Trevi Fountain did you get.

Have you seen the new city skyline variations they're doing with those.

Why, yes, Lego is my primary dept I'm in charge of. :-)

The other one I got was Venice, which was a very easy set to assemble. I got the Eiffel Tower for Christmas and loved putting that one together, which is why I asked for more sets for my birthday. :)

I haven't seen the city skyline variations, but I am intrigued. I love Legos and was so disappointed when the kidlet got old enough to no longer need help assembling the complicated sets. So now I have my own. :)

I kind of want to switch my major to elementary education so I can be a gigantic b!!+! to a room full of little kids all day.

My mom certainly disagrees. Her favorite among all my teachers was the middle school teacher who'd send me to on campus suspension for the day every time I asked an irrelevent question or spoke out of turn or said something not appropriate to the task at hand (I have Aspergers and ADHD. I failed that class because I was never allowed to be in class.).

Now, personally, I'm not going to do that. I'm just going to say really mocking, sarcastic, and belittling things to them whenever they ask or answer a question while failing to ever actually reinforce any useful knowledge at all. And I'll never actually answer their questions, just talk down to them. And I'll assign textbook reading like it was a college course. And invest in a dunce cap. I might not even bother to show up sober. And then at the end of the course I'll just give everyone a B because I never really cared anyway.

Okay, try not to get a job in Madison then, pretty positive we don't need that kind of teacher.

No offense and all, it's just my dad is a retired social worker/special ed. teacher, and my daughter had awful experiences with a succession of terrible substitute teachers after her primary teacher passed away from cancer a month into kindergarten.

So, i might be a little biased against such statements, but to each their own. :-)

That sounds awful. I don't mean that in a patronizing way either. No kid needs to receive those kind of crappy messages about their worth, especially not from people they look up to, like parents and teachers. Those wrong messages sink in, sink in deep, and take a long time to dig out/route around mentally.

My sarcasm meter doesn't work, so I can't tell if your serious or not. Abuse is not character building. Undermining kids self-esteem is not character building.

And frankly, coming what you've said above it, it sounds like abuse because the hypothetical actions as teacher you've given would be repeating the cycle. Kids who were abused didn't deserve it: not you, and not them.

Most of my teachers were pretty good... except for three of them.

- The worst one was a sexist who subtracted a full letter grade from all his female students. And treated us like dirt. I learned two things in his class: that no one in the system actually cares if you are mistreated and that my mom for all her faults was like a tornado ripping her way through red tape and bureaucrats like a tornado through flimsy buildings on my behalf.

- There was also one old guy who droned on in a monotone using a script he wrote 30 years ago... It was SO hard to stay awake in that class. I didn't learn anything in his class...

- The last was a mean woman who hit me with a metal ruler every time I failed to pay attention in class. I did learn to write poetry in her class. I even won an award for poetry so she did at least teach me even if it hurt.

Rosita:

Spoiler:
Are you ok?

Despite what I said, I don't mean you any ill will. In fact, I wish you the best. It sounds like you've gone through hell as a kid, and if no one has told you yet: you didn't deserve that, and I'm sorry you went through it.

You didn't deserve that.

Really. You didn't deserve that.

If I was harsh on you, it's because I don't want to see you repeating the cycle of what was done to you. You are a good person, and I'm not sure you could forgive yourself if you did something similar. These thoughts get in our heads--our minds are permanently re-shaped--by these awful things we experience as kids. Having these thoughts doesn't make you a bad person; it's the scar tissue we're stuck with, some faulty neural wiring we have to learn to route around.

Do you have someone you can talk to? Sometimes, it helps to just air these things out, to vent them so they don't stagnate and fester. The listener doesn't have to have any solutions or fixes, but just having someone honestly listen and acknowledging your experiences can help.

That sounds awful. I don't mean that in a patronizing way either. No kid needs to receive those kind of crappy messages about their worth, especially not from people they look up to, like parents and teachers. Those wrong messages sink in, sink in deep, and take a long time to dig out/route around mentally.

I can't disagree with that. A lot of my adult development has been realizing that my parents could not handle an autistic child, and were teaching me not to be self confident or independent. We're talking "You are to come straight home from school every day, and you are to stay home and not leave without a parent present. Even though you are 17." level stuff. Oh, and whenever I failed at something (Like cooking a meal or riding a kick scooter), my mother would tell me I obviously have no ability to do that thing and forbid me from doing it again (I overcooked one pasta dish at 14, and she was using that as justification for why I couldn't cook anything at all when I was 16). And we haven't even got to the paranoia, racism, gender policing, and borderline physical abuse yet.

And all of that pales in comparison to what my maternal grandmother did to my mother when she was growing up. I'm not even mad at my mother anymore. I think she was a broken person trying her best and messing it up because she didn't know how to be a good mom because she was raised by a violent drunken drug addict who only had her because abortion was illegal and her mother would have never allowed her to give a child up for adoption. Throw on Aspergers, and my mother had no idea what she was doing. At least she tried not to be a horrible person, unlike some other mothers in this family.

I was peddling black humor and sarcasm from the moment I proposed becoming a teacher solely to be cruel to children. I have no intention to give up urban planning for teaching, and if I did, I'd at least try not to be a raging b~&~#.

I liked almost all of my teachers, save for my 4th grade teacher who is responsible for my hatred of math.

Will never forgive the multiplication table for existing, or the school system for throwing out everything I learned about multiplication in 3rd grade ahead of schedule(which resembles what's being done in kumon and those other weird advanced placement extra curricular fancy-schamncy semi-schools with their focus on concepts, as well as a bit of the common core thing people seem to be complaining about today).

Thanks. I have been told that (when I lived with my paternal grandmother, she'd tell me that every time the subject came up). It's just, like you say, not something that you ever get rid of.

I know what you mean. At a logical level, I know hitting a child does a lot more harm than good, and I know it didn't teach me anything. On an emotional level, I typically don't agree with it. I still have those days where I see a kid doing something and wonder why the parent isn't dishing out a well deserved ass whupping, even though I've told myself over and over that ass whuppings don't work and are a form of abuse. Yet sometimes I find myself viscerally defending the practice online, usually when I'm in a bad mood. I know it's wrong, but sometimes I just get that visceral "WE MUST SOLVE EVERYTHING WITH VIOLENCE AND ULTIMATUMS AND DRACONIAN PUNISHMENTS" mood, and it all goes downhill. It makes me wonder if I should refrain from ever adopting kids, even though I want to someday.

Yea, I know exactly what you're talking about.

There's always university counseling services, but I've never really felt the need.

I tried to do long multiplication in my navigation lecture today. I couldn't. It's been so long I no longer remember how. And forget about long division.
