Why not?

Hmm... not very familiar with collegiate sports?

Trying to remain as... polite... as possible, bias among collegiate judges/referees/etc. is the stuff of legend. There are the "rules", which belong in quotes, and there are the judges' decisions.

In my day, it was:
(1) Which competitor is Korean?
(2) Which competitor do we feel did better?
(3) Who do the rules say should win?

I'm hoping at least (1) has gone by the wayside in the last 25 years...

EDIT: Darn it, Anius! You finally got me!

The line between sports and gaming blurs even more.

Now you guys have me wanting to go off on the whole politics of collegiate sports, though Freehold with throw a bike at me.

I made the U.C. Berkeley national collegiate Tae Kwon Do team.

Why? Was it that I was great? Was it that I had a chance of winning it all for them?

Nope. It was because I was in the same weight class as their world champion, and they needed someone who could take a beating in another bracket to exhaust the opponents and increase his chances of winning.

I'll admit, I was really, really good, and I *might* have earned that spot. But hearing the strategy sessions, I knew what my place was intended to be: The "impenetrable beating dummy" for the other teams.

Fortunately, I graduated before I had to resign...

I suspect that answer is something along "not anymore, no"

No more or less so than I am almost any other sports, with the possible exception of little league baseball and soccer. >_>

Yep.

Long story short, there's a player on our NWN server who Scint, Ebon, and I used to play alongside very regularly. Over the past eight months he's turned into a bit of a drama whore, and every time we seem to be inching toward some manner of resolution, something happens and he goes careening back into guilt tripping and blame-gaming.

Frankly, I've grown exceedingly exhausted dealing with it. And when one of the biggest complaints is "you avoid me"... it makes me want to respond, "hell yes I avoid you sometimes, because you're a black hole of drama, martyrdom, and self-pity".

I am really not looking forward to hearing ranting about this for the next month and a half -_- and I'll leave it as that so as not to prompt further political discussion in FAWTL >_>

Mayhaps some Smurfs dancing merrily along will lighten the mood :-)

Yay!

Well, so far I'm pleasantly surprised in that all I wanted was an explanation of the legal mumbo-jumbo going on, and I got a few very civil posts explaining it.

Must be because it's the middle of the day. It'll blow up into lunacy tonight...

...and of course, Captain Yesterday now found the thread, and I think he's trying to ensure he wins the "when will it be locked" bet.

So since I think talking about other threads is another violation of FaWTL rules, I'll flee before Freehold gets home and hits me with that darned cannon.

It smarts!

in that case, tell him the truth. You are doing him no favors hiding this from him. While telling someone they are being a drag rarely helps, keeping them in ignorance always hurts when the truth inevitably comes out.

I have seen them exactly thrice, including one time I saw one on the way home from work. They are a welcome diversion when working the second job in hells kitchen, but that's about it. They are truly for the tourists to gawk at, no less and no more.

Regarding their "intimidating tactics", if you have trouble saying "no thanks" to someone, then you really shouldn't be visiting New York City. You'll end up buying a 30 dollar hot dog like the rube you are.

This is a beautiful song. But the thing that always strikes me about it is that apparently, in late-1970s Canada, you could buy a pint of draft beer for 45 cents.

Because the world is an uncaring, cruel place, born from carelessness and inaction, rather than malice.
