British Steel is an epic album.

I'm a huge fan of their early albums. Rocka-Rolla, Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin.

Last Rose of Summer , not only one of the first metal ballads, but may be the best ballad ever.

BT your drunk posts are fun. I also wonder if you take a look at them the next day or so and say to yourself, "why."

My filter is much more porous on many levels when I drunk post. Sometimes that's not too bad, but it can be pretty melancholy or passionate. I have experienced a huge amount of personal loss and tragedy, and I try to limit how much of that I share online so I don't come off as a whiny sympathy hound and because I'm an intensely private man by nature. I feel more free to share some personal pain on this thread, but I endeavor to keep it to appropriate levels. Drunk posting doesn't help to maintain those boundaries.

I work very hard on the political threads to be well reasoned over intensity and passion, but it's a struggle even when sober. When I'm drunk posting I come across as even more of a radical nut than a reasoned participant. It's probably a waste of time to argue with fanatics, but it's hard to ignore blatant falsehood and stupidity.

So when I ask "why" the next day or so it's less out of regret for what I posted than why do I get online when I'm drinking. :)

EDIT: I'm more fanatic than many, but at least I'm at peace and honest with my fanaticism for individual liberty.

I know, I fail. :(

For what it's worth, the few times that you have posted in political threads, I found your posts to be well reasoned and substantive.

Quality over quantity. (and you never seem to drunk post unlike me.)

:)

You say 'drunk post' as if it's a bad thing... ;)

Until I over share.. :)

Have you LOOKED at some of my posts? I wish drinking was the reason. I keep going back and wondering, WTF did I word it that way?

Then again some people are so passionate on some causes, well its just better to leave it alone.

LOL! I feel your pain, but you seem to be a better writer than me.

I find posting to be a very frustrating way to communicate. I'm quite articulate in person, but I truly struggle with the written word.

Even my drunken rants in person seem more reasonable than some of my posts.

The FAWTL's who met me at Paizocon my agree or disagree. :)

That's a commendable impulse, but I'm hitting the sack before I open a political thread. :)

I don't think I have ever heard Fear of the Dark before. However much I like some Maiden I can't say as to the fact that I have heard nearly any or all of their works.

I recomend the live video of Fear... from the "Death on the road" dvd

you can find it on you tube
pure goosebump-y awesomness

Fear..... is my favorite live song from any artist

Iron Maiden = Somewhere in Time

Judas Priest = probably British Steel but Turbo has always had a warm spot in my heart.

Both albums are probably the most synth-influenced for both bands. Whereas I dig Somewhere In Time, Turbo not so much.

Turbo was the first JP album I owned, but is actually my 'least' favorite.* Which only means I like it a little bit less than the rest of their work.

*Note that I don't count Jugulator or Demolition as actual Priest Albums. They are beneath my notice.

Bah! Jugulator isn't bad of an album. The title track (that scream at the 3:18 mark is boss) and especially Cathedral Spires is an excellent song. The conclusion of that track still sends chills down my spine.

Some folks also write-off Maiden's The X Factor and Virtual XI for similar reasons. Sign Of The Cross is an excellent song (and Bruce has since sung the track live instead of doing the "I'm not singing that song because I wasn't a part of the band" attitude that others pull) and perhaps my favorite from that era: The Edge Of Darkness.

EDIT: There's also an awesome fan video of The Edge Of Darkness that I really enjoy as I like how the cuts were interlaced with the movie Apocalypse Now.

YMMV.

Scarab Sages

Where is everyone?

Scarab Sages

Ah ha! There someone is!!!

Scarab Sages

I have been on the ship for more than 12 hours. Again.

Scarab Sages

And I think we're gonna go until about 0300/0400. Not sure yet.

Scarab Sages

And there's no coffee. People may soon have to die.

Scarab Sages

No coffee?!? WTF?!?

Scarab Sages

Not to mention I feel.....sticky.

Scarab Sages

And, with that, it's back to work.

Hi AZ,
are you already at work or still at work?
San Diego, isn't it?

I dont like Turbo either

Fav Maiden: Iron Maiden, with Bruce maybe Number of the beast, but I like everything with him except the last one, urgh

Priest: British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance

I hid when you all started discussing heavy metal from after the fourth Led Zeppelin album. ;)

*plays some Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass*

I've had a few beers. I'll be happy to link some! ;)

Iron Maiden - Paschendale

This is one of my favorite songs that speaks to the unspeakable waste of war.

Iron Maiden - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Full Length

Another classic.

Iron Maiden - The Trooper (lyrics)

Crimean war classic.

I'll toss up a pair of newer Maiden that I enjoy:

Montségur, which was based on the Cathar stronghold of the same name, which fell during the Albigensian Crusade in 1244.

The Nomad.

... and a song off an earlier album that was a bit maligned.

Mother Russia.

And one of my all time underrated favorites ...

TO SAAAAAND! ... To Tame A Land

and "Honey, I love you - but I have no Idea what you are talking about" has almost become a proverb in our household by now ;-)

Okay, so I kinda like what I've heard of early Judas Priest. Never been able to enjoy Iron Maiden, though. Some of their stuff have good intros, but then someone will start singing, and that's goodbye from me.

Last Rose of Summer , not only one of the first metal ballads, but may be the best ballad ever.

Let's see some other Priest ballads ...

Before The Dawn.

Diamonds & Rust, the ballad version instead of the original cover they did by Joan Baez.

Night Comes Down.

... and while not necessarily a ballad all the way through, I really REALLY love Dreamer Deceiver.

D'oh, thought you were adding some Sisters of Mercy; for a second. That video is amazing (strange cold-war spoof that it is). Of course, Priest and Maiden are something every good Englishman should be weaned on.

Morning everyone.

Ok, it's a bit too early for Fear Of The Dark - I often hum it when returning from pub, not before noon. Afraid To Shoot Stranges then.

Damn. The Edge Of Darkness melody reminded me of some other music and I can't recall what band or song it was...

Hey aberzombie, FAWTLchat was a few months ago. You must not've received the memo, yeaaaah. Could you fill me out a TPCoffee report? Yeahhhh

Poles love Iron Maiden (well maybe not everyone). On the other hand (If I recall correctly) Czech or Slovakian flight controllers requested Dickinson to sing a bit for them before they allow his plane to land in their airport - Dickinson is professional airline pilot and he often flies over Central Europe, or at least he flew here regularly in the past.

Also, Fear used to be unofficial anthem of habuitual patrons of pub where lots of gamers hanged on.

Anybody here game in San Francisco, or know mature people that do?

Just asking as it may be nice to pad the numbers in the party I'm campaigning with -- a cool bunch, but 4 people for carrion crown is cutting it close!

What's wrong with 4 players on session?

habe you seen the "behind the iron curtain" maiden vid, when they toured poland in the 80s and somehow after a concert ended up at a polish wedding and tool over from the wedding band during the breaks?

Viking laugh at puny pyjama-person.

From the coast of gold, across the seven seas
I'm travelling on, far and wide
But now it seems
I'm just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do
It isn't me but someone else

I close my eyes and think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain't it funny how it is
You never miss it 'til it's gone away
And my heart is lying there
And will be 'til my dying day

So understand
Don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up...make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years
