Money well spent

Paizo General Discussion

Dark Archive

So I was sitting in class, surfing around paizo.com and I decided to calculate how much money I've given to Paizo over the course of my Pathfinder fandom (about one year).

Shockingly I realized I've spent roughly $1076 on Pathfinder products, all from Paizo's website/paizocon store. Hard to believe I've spent this much on an RPG line, but there it is.

And I feel like it was money well worth it. Some of the best products I've ever had the pleasure of reading and using in my games. And it all started with a curious purchase of the Core Rulebook after hearing it was keeping the spirit of 3.5 alive.

A grand is a lot of money to a college student (granted I've had a really well paying job the past year enabling me to spend), but it's a strong investment for one of my favorite hobbies and will be sure to supply enjoyment for years to come. I'll be moving to full-time status at my job in June, working in Seattle (moving from PA!) for a 'big important' company, and will be well able to continue my support.

Thank you Paizo.

I won't ask anyone else to share their expenses, but if you wanna respond with your thoughts on your hobby investment, feel free!

I could have bought a car or 2 with all the money I've spent on RPGs over the last 28 years.

Ah - but today your RPG books would probably be worth more than a car you bought 28 years ago. So, it looks like you made the right investment!

Wow. I don't think I've spent that much on all of my 3.5 stuff including the Pathfinder items I've bought.

Lets see:
Savage Tide AP (about $90)
2 other full APs (about $240 from Amazon new and used)
the 3 core 3.5 books (about $90 total at the time)
the Spell Compendium ($20 on Amazon used)
the original PFCS (I think it was $40 from Amazon)

That's $480 since 2003 and we play at least twice a month right up until today, so many many hours of gaming for the money.

I hope you are getting a ton of gaming in for that $1000 in just the last year. I don't know how your group puts all that stuff to use!

Dark Archive

We've made use of at least 40% of the material bought. A lot of it is waiting in the wings (most of the APs) for other groups and when current campaigns finish. A lot of campaign setting books are merely a joy to read, like the revisited series.

I did include things purchased like paizocon tickets, posters, and such. So a small skew there.

I guess some my reasoning is that I'd like to have as many resources available. Since I no longer have the time to develop my home-brew setting or write compelling adventures due to school and work, investing in the books lets me GM on the fly with plenty of material to satisfy multiple groups.

Meh, a thousand isn't too bad. That was my vendor hall budget for GenCon last year. I had to decrease it from the previous year thanks to my son sucking down $75 in formula every week. Stupid milk/soy allergy.

I have a budget for my hobbies. I never go over budget. Some hobbies, like fishing, don't cost a lot once the initial equipment is purchased. Others, like gaming, have a nice trickle-like effect on my hobby budget. But what's the use of earning the money if you don't enjoy spending it?

I'm sure there are some miniatures I'll never paint, and some games I'll never get to play. But I'm darned sure gonna be set for when they send me off to a nursing home.

Core Rule Book, Bestiary I&II, APG, GMG, Rise of the Rune Lord and Curse of the crimson Throne, and Serpent's Skull in their entirety (print and PDF). Five random issues of other APs. Half a dozen or so of the modules, three of the miniatures, two of the map packs, and three flip matts.

Not to mention all the 3.whatever crap, second edition crap, Shadowrun crap, WoD crap, starwars crap...and more warhammer crap than will fit in my car (trunk, back seat, and passenger seat are all full when I show up to a game, leaving about half behind).

I like every pathfinder book I have purchased. Some I will never use and I purchased them to just see what pathfinder was doing. I was impressed with even those. I bet in over 20 years. I am easily in the $20,000 range. And I almost stopped spending towards the end of 3.5 era. Incarnum Magic, Weapons of Legacy, yuck, never appealed to me. At that time I got into Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition. Still love that game. Also love Runequest, Call of Cthulu, and Savage Worlds. Never liked Gurps, Shadow Run, or WOD, but I knew a few people who DMed them well. DC Mayfair MEGS was fantastic, as was Deadlands. Never played Boot Hill or Gamma World though, Cyborg Commando was an embarassment of people I love and respect (sigh). Oh the memories my multiple book shelves bring me of the amazing and talented people I was priveleged to play with over the years.

I've spent slightly more, here on paizo.com alone, since jan. 2010.

I, too, find that it is money well spent. Though I haven't had the chance to put it all to use yet, that will come later. I'm still young :>

So far I've bought:
Every AP (completed Rise of the runlords off of Ebay)
Every hardcover
All the player companions
All of the campaign-setting source books
3-4 modules
a megamat, some pencils and a few minis.

I don't regret a single purchase :)

Hmm... Let me see:

  • 41 Adventure Paths so far, each weighing in at 14 bucks. That's $574
  • A bunch of PFRPG rulebooks for about $200
  • The Chronicles stuff that set me back almost $550
  • Companions Cost me another $140

    That's over $ 1450! Plus shipping!

And that's Paizo's Pathfinder book stuff alone.

Add in Pathfinder Miniatures and Legendary Encounters. Add in 3e. Add in various d20 books. Add in other RPGs (some d20 RPG books like Monte Cook's World of Darkness, as well as some L5R and nWoD). Add in Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures.

I could have got a car for all that dosh. Maybe not a new one (unless I get one of those really cheap ones without any extras), and maybe not a Pathfinder (;-)), but a car nonetheless.

But I also call it well spent. $1450 for all that Pathfinder stuff isn't so bad. My TV cost more than that. And the life-span of consumer electronics being what it is nowadays, It's possible that I'll get more use out of Pathfinder ;-)

  • Not counting secondary market purchases (my Rise of the Runelords prints were a gift from a friend who runs a used bookstore, and I also picked up two of the Classic Creatures Revised books from him):

2 print copies of the PFRPG Beta Rules
Core Rule Book, print & PDF
    Game Mastery Guide
    Advanced Players' Guide
    Bestiary, print & PDF
    Bestiary 2, PDF only

Into the Haunted Forest, PDF only
Crown of the Kobold King, print & PDF
    Hungry Are the Dead
    Kingmaker AP
    Guide to the River Kingdoms
    PFS#11 The Third Riddle

Too lazy to look up all the retail prices of those items, but everything was purchased either directly from the Paizo store or via my FLGS, with the possible exception of Bestiary 1, which my wife most likely ordered from Amazon as my big gamer geek Christmas gift last year.

I don't know if Paizo gets a license fee off of Hero Lab data packs or not, but I've also bought the HL add-ons for the core rules, APG, and Bestiary 1. I was also a Dungeon subscriber from about Issue #128 until the end of its print run.

...And it looks like they'll be getting even more cash from me with the release of Carrion Crown. =]

EDIT: By comparison, the only money I've spent on WotC products in the equivalent amount of time, not counting secondary market purchases of 3.5 material, has been for the 4E Essentials line and the Castle Ravenloft board game - and I bought almost all of those products through Amazon at a steeply discounted price point.

BAH! Don't you even go there; I know you stole that money from the Royal Treasury in Egorian!

I shudder to think of the money I have (gladly mind you) thrown at my assortment of Pathfinder odds n ends in the last couple years. I have pretty good collections of the other game systems I own. But I'm sure Pathfinder is the most complete thus far. It could easily top $1500us I'd wager. But, my life at this point is busy enough that I can really only squeeze in a hobby and I've chosen roleplaying games. Even then I seem to have to wedge the time in between writing storm drainage reports and pulling electrical cables and rocks out of my son's mouth.

$1000 bucks a year on roleplaying supplies seems high, but there are a lot of hobbies people have that are money intensive enough to drain $83/month especially if you start looking at collectors of [fill in the blank].

Thats easy money there. I have been into dnd/pf for about 8 years now, but hadnt bought much. Up until last year when it was dropped, I was heavily invested in Star Wars Miniatures, which was frequently called 'plasticrack' by fellow gamers. I think I dropped probably $6000+ in the 5ish years I was actively involved in that game. Still got all of it now, but obviously doent cost me much anymore.

Since starting PF( and PFS) since last summer, Ive probably dropped $300. Personally, I think Im doing pretty well, lol.

Anyway, while I dont regret any of that money spent, its easily more worth it for rpgs than minis games.

For PF only products, about $300...for my entire collection of RPGs and board games...dare I even calculate it...$9000+ Then again, I do have way too many board games...

Counting my pending order, over $200 alone so far this year....

Over a grand @ paizo.com, and that's not counting the occasional Paizo stuff from the FLGS. So maybe $1250ish since the Dungeon/Dragon switchover?

I don't regret a dime of it, though I've subsequently divested myself of much of the 3.5 material. I switched to 4E for a while, and now I just don't have the time/interest to do any sort of conversion...

In the GoL days I was buying D&D minis by the case. I hate to think how much I spent. On the other hand, I did sell a lot of them later at a tidy profit. I was sad to see the decline and eventual death of the line, but that's another story.

I have given Paizo $5800+ over the years, but probably easily spent a lot more then that total on my RPG hobby.

Gosh, that was alarming. I've got $684 pending/shipping in February and spent $1195 in January. Admittedly I've just had a bit of a spurt of impulse purchases and it includes several orders, each with fast international shipping, but still...I'd better not go back to much further in case my wife reads this. :/

The Paizo stuff was definitely money well spent though, I can think of maybe two of their products which were meh (to me). The rest have usually been astonishing. :)

Decided to play and see where I come in.

I've spent $2175.19 since my first purchase in December 2007.

I'm half-afraid to see what my Amazon and eBay totals would show for RPG purchases in that same time period...

Not that I'm complaining. It's all been worth it, especially the Paizo stuff.

2000 - 2007: 3 Core rulebooks x 2, Epic level handbook, two psionics books, ~5 years of Dragon Magazine, 30 minis, 1 set of paints, 15 sets of dice, 2 gaming mats =~ $702.40
[Aug 2007 Dragon/Dungeon cancelled, Pathfinder begins]
    2007-Present, Total spent on Paizo.com: $5,501.99

Owner - House of Books and Games LLC

I've spent $2580.64 at paizo.com since this order:

Jun 25, 2007 - Pathfinder Adventure Path Ongoing Subscription

This unfortunately does *not* include every single item they make; I was a bit late on the bus for the modules, cards, and maps. And my first Planet Stories was #23.

That doesn't include the money I spent completing my collection of Chronicles and Companion books, of which I now have a complete set, so odds are another couple hundred should be tacked on there.

No possible way to tell what I spent on 3.5e and 4e stuff, but since I've got dozens of books, I'm sure it was a lot. I have virtually all of the WoTC 3.5e books, a smattering of non-WoTC 3.5e books (perhaps 20-30), and the first 20-25 4e books WoTC published; I gave up buying them soon after the PHB3 came out (March 2010).

In any case, at this point my entire RPG budget (save what I spend at cons) goes to my subscription; I'm perfectly happy with that. Though I will 100% certainly be getting the updated Tome of Horrors.

Yipes, pushing 3 grand.. mind you that's since ... May 1 2007 - the Pathfinder Ongoing Subscription :-)

Uh oh, you got me! But in all seriousness, I'm a Senior graduating in May with a dual major, with a full-time job lined up immediately. At this point I just need to not fail any classes. Granted, all that day's lecture was about was the assigned reading (which I did in advance). Didn't lose out on anything by browsing, just needed to be there for attendance taking.

    =D

Well... my Pathfinder investment is only a relatively small part of my yearly spending as a roleplaying, wargaming hobbyist.

I don't really run published mods, but I do like to read them every now and again, to study their format and use as a general guide to making my own stuff look more official. So I only have a few of those. Mostly pdf. Also, mostly pdf on the books: I have only Core and Bestiary in hardcover, plus the screen.

However, I spend a huge chunk of cash on obtaining minis, painting them, and creating terrains to run our Pathfinder games upon. So that goes into the overall investment, though only a few of those things are branded Pathfinder (Reaper minis).

Overall, between that and my Warmahordes habit, odd bits I just like to paint, gifts to friends, various supplies, etc...

I spent probably about $1,800.00 last year. That's actually probably down a bit from the year previous, as I actually restrained myself pretty well. I think this year is already on track to closer to $2,000.00.

PAIZO is a lot of EUROS spent if you are serious about collecting and gaming:

Bought everything PAIZO at least twice, proudly supporting my local store = +/- € 10.000,-.

Totally agreeable and a bargain in comparison to the "FRED" I spent for completing my collections regarding DUNGEON MAG(DC 25), DRAGON MAG (DC 30) and all of the minis(DC = I will have my vengeance WOTC - in this life or the next one ...).

But be carefull not to lose your sd&rr budget over it.

    Let's see....

Checking my receipts going back to the beginning of 2010, this is everything bought and pre-ordered (shipping cost included if applicable).
