Okay, I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who helped the knife fighter make it through to the top 16 (thankfully, he brought me with him).
I'll answer a few points.
The name is so boring!
I know, I know. I had a string of other names I was toying with- knifeman, cutter, shiv, dagger master, subtle blade. At the end of the day, I didn't want people to shove the knife fighter into a single niche. I really tried to cover every way someone might want to play the class, without them forcing them to a single style. From the breastplate-wearing nobleman to the back alley street fighter, everyone could be a knife fighter!
It's so broken!
I did not expect that. I can understand the initiative bonus being too high relative to bravery, taht should be reigned back in, but the weapon mastery at 1st level was the only incentive I could think of for someone to actually use the dagger from level 1-20. Otherwise you'd likely see people using a longsword (or wahtever) until they hit the level that knife mastery kicks in.
I do agree somewhat with the question of a rogue dipping for one or two levels, but I don't think it really adds that much over the fighter. It gives up 1 feat and a conditional bonus to Will saves for +1 to hit and damage with daggers, +1 conditional bonus to sleight of hand when concealing weapons and +1 initiative. The shortsword already provides +1 damage over daggers, so this amounts to whether the skill and initiative bonus are that better than bravery. It could be, but I do not believe it's overwhelmingly so. YMMV.
