Getting PC's together

Kingmaker

I just started reading and getting Kingmaker ready for my players. My particular group take a lot of pleasure in PC group setup and meeting everyone. From what I have read the first encounter the adventure kind of throws the PC's into the first encouter as a group. How did others handle this? Any suggestions of how others introduced the PC's to each other for this campaign?

Scarab Sages

My PCs were presented with a single charter in Restov in the assembly room of the Swordlords. It was the first time they had seen each other, having been drawn there for their own purposes (they knew they were going to get it).

During the few days it took to get to Oleg’s is when the getting-to-know-you stuff took place for them. It worked out really well. By the time things started to go down at their destination, they were ready to work as a team.

I took the decision to make party creation a little more in depth. The party leader has been given the charter and has to round up friends to be part of the expedition. He'll sit down with each of them as they create their character and work out a backstory. Then as jtokay suggests I'm going to start the first session in Restov so they have the journey to mingle.

My preferred method is to reward characters with a written background with a potion or scroll at 1st level. I don't want everyone to know everything about each other, I just ask each PC to write two other PCs into their backgrounds.

My players made sufficient, but unconnected backgrounds, so we picked up the story on the road to Oleg's.

Essentially, when the Swordlords were drawing up charters, the PCs were the odd men out, but there were enough of them for a charter, so the swordlords offered them the opportunity to group up.

Traveling together and then working on the plan to defend Oleg's were their 'getting to know you' times.

The Exchange

I had all the PCs in Pitax for various reasons. Their backgrounds were varied but they each had their own motivations for wanted to explore the wilderness, and maybe, forge there own Kingdom.

The Cleric had been directed by the Church to go to Pitax and wait further instructions.

The Chaos Monk, who had left the Order because of ill discipline, owed a favour and delivered the letters of instruction to the Cleric to and a group to petition for oen of the charters on offer in Brevoy. The Monk was late, of course, and the only had a day to get the group together.

They put up a notice and paid the Town Cryer to recuit other members. The summoner and his eidolon (his still born twin brother who was buried in a fey mound and his soul was transported to the First World) answer the call.

While this was happening, the Monk was asked to put up more notices in the taverns across town. He decides to drink instead and strikes up a conversation with the Bard.

The party have met.

Given the animosity between Pitax and Brevoy no one else answers the call. In fact, the Cleric is jeered and booed by the locals so the hurried, makeshift party make a hasty exit for Restov where they have to compete for a Charter. Through various connections, some more roleplay and successful use of diplomacy, they succeed in scoring the Charter for Greenbelt.

There are many other details that are very specific to my players characters but I managed to weave motivations and points of interest for everyone.

If could have all gone horribly wrong, but with a bit of planning and free form roleplay we got a party together. It helped that I worked with each player to develop and interesting character concept and background.

I thought this was a good way to introduce some locations, NPCs, and they fact that the party has one of four charters to explore the Stolen Lands.

I will be interesting to see if such an odd mix of player characters can make a fist of it!
