Do any webfiction/novels overlap characters/events/dates...

I have a compulsion to read chronologically and can't force myself to read anything until I know the chronological order, despite being a subscriber and having bought the epub versions of the webfiction... please help :)

The fiction in the council of thieves AP, followed by the first web fiction, followed by prince of wolves are all about the same two main characters (the webfiction and prince of wolves are direct tie-ins)

Paizo Employee Managing Editor

Other than The Lost Pathfinder, which happens between Council of Thieves and Prince of Wolves, off the top of my head, I believe only Noble Sacrifice takes place in the past... all others are considered to be more or less in the "literary present."

Soo...

First Noble Sacrifice, then everything else (with Hell's Pawns before The Lost Pathfinder before Prince of Wolves).

Is that correct?

Yep.

It's pretty easy because of the lack of geographical overlap.

Alrighty, I'm all excited to be downloading more Pathfinder ficton, on sale, and I'm wondering where the stories that have come out over the last year fit.

Thanks!

A Lesson in Taxonomy takes place in the past as well, as it involves Varian as a Pathfinde before meeting Radovan.

Nothing else of chronological note?

"The Perfumer's Apprentice" (the first installment of which should be rolling tomorrow) takes place chronologically after "The Secret of the Rose and Glove," both by myself.

"Faithful Servants" by James L. Sutter takes place before his novel Death's Heretic.

"The Walkers from the Crypt" by Howard Andrew Jones takes place at least twenty years before the events in his novel Plague of Shadows.

"The Ironroot Deception" by Robin D. Laws involves the same characters as in his novel The Worldwound Gambit. I'm not certain which comes first.

Likewise, Elaine Cunningham's "The Illusionist" involves a character from her novel Winter Witch. I think it's a prequel but I'm also not certain.

I believe that The Ironroot Deception takes place after The Worldwound Gambit. This assumption is based solely on one character inquiring about another character and the whereabouts of the subject being unknown to Gad.

All vagueness in the above is entirely intentional. If you read both stories, you'll figure out what I'm talking about.

Thanks for filling in the details, everybody! I was clearly blanking when I responded before. :P

It is a prequel, because something happens in the short story that is indirectly referred to in the novel as having happened in the past.

The Goblinblood Wars, which are the backdrop of Noble Sacrifice, began in 4697 AR and ran for 4 years, so depending when one considers "present" and when in the war the story takes place, you're looking at around 10–15 years between that story and Golarion's present day.

As for A Lesson in Taxonomy, the events of this story occur during the reign of Khemet II, the Crocodile King. More narrowly, they occur between the victory of the Free Captains over the Chelish fleet in Desperation Bay in 4643 AR and the death of Baron Grallus in 4662 AR. Thus, one can state the story dates to the mid 47th century AR, or roughly 60 years ago.

I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean. Stories set in the past are consistent with their time period. Certainly character developments in an early story are reflected in later stories. But for the most part, the stories don't actually influence the campaign setting around them overmuch--the ones set in the past don't have huge impacts beyond the characters involved, and the ones set in "the present" are assumed to take place in the same nebulous present as the modules and adventure paths, which is to say that, except for direct sequels, no two products presume you've already read through/played through the other one. (So you might see some Easter eggs here and there, but, for instance, Prince of Wolves doesn't presume the events of the Carrion Crown Adventure Path have already taken place, and vice versa.) We try hard to make sure our books don't invalidate each other.

Does that answer the question?

Also, thanks everyone for putting together the comprehensive list that I didn't have time to. :)

You are most welcome, but, you will not lose anything by reading any of these out of order. All of the Pathfinder Tales are written in such a way that a later story will not spoil a more recent story. I just put things in order because I enjoy reading them in order.

Update: added Thieves Vinegar to the Norret/Orlin Web fiction list

I just noticed that I have left it up to the reader to figure out where to find these stories. Some are novels, some are web fiction, some are Journals from the AP's (generally released later as an ePub). I have not included any stories that do not have a connection to other stories (such as Robin Laws' Plague of Light or Elaine Cunningham's Dark Tapestry) or that I have not read (such as Prodigal Sons).

Note:You will not lose anything by reading any of these out of order. All of the Pathfinder Tales are written in such a way that a later story will not spoil a more recent story. I just put things in order because I enjoy reading them in order. Where stories are not connected, I have endeavored to place then in the order that they were published.

I have not included any stories that do not have a connection to other stories (such as Robin Laws' Plague of Light, Elaine Cunningham's Dark Tapestry or Prodigal Sons.

To assist the reader, I am adding some notation after each story.

You know, I wonder if an editable page on the PathfinderWiki (here) would work better for tracking this sort of thing. The wiki currently has an article on each of these titles, so they could be easily linkified. Also, you wouldn't need to keep reprinting an ever-growing list every few months, instead just updating the same page when new information comes to light.

Look at how subtle Mark is in trying to lure you into his web. :D

Thanks for all the great work, Itchy!

It probably would work better to run this in a Wiki. But, I'm a bit too lazy to spend time figuring that out when it's easy enough to just maintain a Word Document and keep adding to it.

You are welcome, Mr. Sutter!

Itchy - We can help you get a page started easily enough. I will try to through a few mockup pages together this weekend in my sandbox on the wiki and supply you with a link, so you can select what style you like

I started working on getting this updated. I've got a few of the authors done. I figured out how to add new ones without asking! *high five*

Thank you for your very generous help! Editing is a lot easier than I thought it would be, especially with such a good model to work with.

Awesome! Us New Englanders need to stick together! Hopefully today's storm (and the one coming this weekend) find you with some good stories to read or reread.

I also made a few stylistic changes to the page to make it a bit more reader-friendly. Thanks for the hard work on it, guys!

Yesterday I chose sledding over shoveling. It's much more fun participating in high speed winter activities with your offspring than shoveling out the car. I can shovel out the car after work this afternoon.

That does look better. Thanks!

Just started reading the novels in the last week (The Worldwound Gambit and Song of the Serpent so far) and found this thread tonight. Is there a chronological order posted on http://www.pathfinderwiki.com/ or should I use the last posting from Itchy on this thread?

If there's something on the Wiki, can somebody provide a direct link?

Absolutely awesome - thanks Itchy (and everybody else on this thread) for making this happen.

I started A Lesson in Taxonomy based on these recommendations. Going to follow the order from here on out.

Clarification: Each author's work has its own chronology that has no effect on the other authors' works. The notable exception to this, is that Worldwound Gambit takes place approximately 2 years prior to King of Chaos.

Regarding A Lesson in Taxonomy: the story actually has a lot more punch if you read it after Prince of Wolves.

I'm still working on getting everything transferred to the Wiki. My family has a recent arrival that is cutting into my sleep/hobby time. I'll get there, though.

Andoran

This is a really useful thread guys. Thanks for keeping it up to date!
