After preping to run this I noticed that there are two secret doors (6f to 9b & 29 to 27) that start on one level and end 30' higher or lower. To fix this I created a 5' shaft with a ladder. Is there a more efficient method to handle this or have I misinterpreted the map in some way?

No, you are just more observant than most. The fix is fine, but I would be surprised if any players would have caught it. I'm pre-drawing the maps right now and I didn't even think about it. Well done!

Doug, when you're done drawing that, can you mail it to me so I don't have to?.. ;)

Using the Craft Map feat does draw off my GP and XP, but I enjoy the compliments which is why I do it in the first place.

Doug,

What format do you create the maps in that you can mail them? I am still using gridded paper and a straightedge.

5/5

We both use prismacolor markers and 2-ft by 3-ft grided pads from your local office supply store. That plus a billion hours results in excellent maps.

agree on the billon hours .. takes a bit to get to where a person feels partially competent at drawing (and I've learned I'm sooooo not an artist lol)

Why not use Gaming Paper?.. And they make 2 x 3 1 inch Grid paper? I have never seen it...

I just bought 2 sets of multicolor permanent markers, one set of regular tips, and one set of thin tips. I also just bought Template sets.

Because it's brown. Also 95% of PFS maps fit on the pads we use which are something like 27 squares by 34 squares.

When I draw with a translucent water based marker (which most are), the brown color comes through and distorts your color. Yellows are nearly impossible.

It's likely brown because brown paper is much cheaper than white.

Just Google something like - easel pad grid

edit: Or click here. 200 sheets for $40.

I get mine from OfficeMax. It is the paper used for easel presentations. Both OfficeMax & Office Depot list the quadrule paper on their websites.

So now I am a little confused . . . Is Dragnmoon asking Doug to actually physically mail a set of maps to him? My mind immediately went to emailing some electronic version of the maps.

I believe it was said as a joke personally

I've found my graph paper online and order .. 1/2 the price of smaller pads at my local staples... plus white and a flat surface are a + for the pads .. brown and rolled are negatives in my book.

Gaming Paper does make white 1" grid on single 8-1/2" x 11" sheets, but they can be a pain to put together on the fly and, unless you use tape, scatter about the table as people move. The standard letter size, however, does make them easy to mail and/or transport.

5/5

The 37" version of these work well for our maps.

I'm not a big fan of using tapes on maps unless I have to; I have on a couple of occasions as the maps ended up being to large for the size of graph paper that I have.

I have been thinking about Drawing up a Map, putting it on Cardboard or Foam board, then cutting it all up to individual sections and put the map back together as they enter the new ares.

I am worried about messing it up though with cluing it to the board and f%~#ing that up or screwing up while I am cutting it, and have to go back to draw the map all over again!

The Exchange 5/5

My opinion on it would be to cut the map apart before glueing and then use a spray adhesive to attach to the foam board -- I'd also have the foam board precut... but that's a lot of work and expense and makes it hard to transport in my opinion

not really, it will be in small sections and easy to put into a back pack.

I would think cluing the map first would be easier so the board is the same fit as the map.

The Exchange 5/5

yeah .. but if you screw up cutting the board all the time you spent on the map is wasted .. if you them separately you only risk screwing up one thing instead of two

hrmm .. point ... my time for mapping is limited tho between work and school so I wouldn't want to take the chance .. but that's me .. the foam board is an interesting idea all the same.

Dave the Barbarian has done some of this using foam core. Also I have seen foam core that already had gridlines printed on it so that would eliminate the gluing part of the equation.

Depending how general the areas are, Fat Dragon Games is great. If you're not familiar go to their site and check it out. The 3D stuff is meant to print on card stock with some assembly required, but the 2D stuff, especially the floor tiles and accessories can be printed on standard paper and glued to foam core board. I use them in home games to great success, and use toothpicks to join the foam boards together so they don't shift during play. And much cheaper than Dwarven Forge with the same effect. The DF stuff is awesome to look at, but the walls are too high, IMO, and make it difficult to see, especially in corridors.

For those the Pre draw the map, how do you deal with Surprise? Like not knowing what it looks like behind that door? or where that Secret door is?

Fog of war? Cover the parts of the map they haven't seen yet with paper and use drafting tape so it comes off easy when the time is right.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

Post-it note pages work well also, but a bit more expensive than drafting tape

Sovereign Court 5/5

I don't mark secret doors on the maps and then add in the above methods of covering the unknown areas of the map and surprise is maintained well most of the time.

We just finsihed our 10 hour marathon of this, players thought it was too much for 4 level 1s

Had a:

Fighter 1
Cleric 1
Alchemist 1
Wizard 1

They did fine until the last battle

The Svilennius with His Shield Extract, Str Mutagen and Enlarged person potion took down the Fighter, Wizard and cleric. The Alchemist graped the cleric and ran, the Wizard and Fighter where killed. Alchemist came back with the Cleric and 2 replacements and they almost lost again, but where able to finish him off in the end.

No map packs or flipmats accompany the Godsmouth Heresy. The good news is that the dungeon is easy to draw on your standard flipmat. The bad news is there's a LOT of dungeon to draw.

secret doors:

I added a ladder to the one on the west side between the two secret doors. And added stairs between the hidden Pharasma tomb and the outer tomb(between 29 and 30).

I ran this a few days ago and within 4 hours the party had discovered the secret door behind the Pharasma statue they passed the bone gate where I stopped the party to play in the second session.

I'm just wondering had we gamed an extra hour or so they would have completed the main mission. Even though they ventured through only 25% of the dungeon.

Has anyone had this issue?

The second time I ran it the players completed the mission in 5.5 hours. They didn't discover the secret doors in the Grand Cathederal (8) nor did they enter through the disposal pit (11). They finally figured out where the secret door was after dealing with the skeletons (23). After dealing with the alchemist they took another 1.5 hours mopping up the sections they had skipped.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

I am planning to run this mod for my local group. With reports that some are completing it in as little as 1-2 sessions, does that mean you increase the "value" of each session? If the group completes the mod in two sessions, and a player only attends one, does he get half the rewards instead of losing 1/3? Also, do you wait until the end to issue chronicles? If so, what if someone only attends the first session? When would they receive their chronicle? I have my own ideas on how to handle this, but looking for some additional perspective.

4/5

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask about this but it came up last night while running Godsmouth Heresy.

Specific encounter:
The Necrophidius' dance of death seems a bit too powerful. It seems like the creature could continue to do this without end until the entire party is dazed. There's nothing in the stat block nor in the Bestiary 2 entry that states that once a save has been made that they are immune for 24 hours or anything like that. I'm sure I could have TPK'd the party last night had I not decided that once a person made the save that they were immune for 24 hours. I know that dazed isn't helpless but I'm pretty sure that would have been the eventual outcome. The tactics says that it will use the ability before attacking. I'm sure the group would not have had much fun watching me try to bite/paralyze each of them with out them having any actions. Only to have to make saves again if they came out of the daze effect. What do you folks think?

The Exchange 5/5

Howman wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

My 2 cents:

Your goal as the GM should be to challenge the players, not to try and TPK them. You made the right call. If the necrophidious was as smart as the GM is, yes, it would use this ability ruthlessly. But it is a construct, and has no intellect. It should do the dance on the opening turn, then bite the rest of the combat until it is destroyed. I give the PCs a perception check to see it crawl out of the pit (odd it has no climb speed but somehow it can get up there). I roll a die to randomly determine which part of the pit it emerges from. Its surprise round action is to crawl up onto the ledge. If the PCs make a perception vs its stealth they can act in the surprise round. After that it dances. Then it melees until the PCs run away or they defeat it.

My two tables were both challenged by this combat. It's a good encounter.
