What a weird world

This thread is a place where people can reflect on the oddness of the world, particularly its geography and popular perceptions.

For example:

The great European shouting match

And keep it civil if a discussion does come up. I don't want this thread to get locked. So no flames about politics, religion, preferred game system, etc. Let's all just enjoy the weird, wonderful, wacky world we inhabit.

I tried to make >this thread< a weird world thread, but it never got traction.

Interesting thread. The starlings really are a pain. They come through here now and then in huge flocks and will empty all the birdfeeders in the neighborhood in minutes. You can't refill them either because the devils just come right back before the native birds do.

Releasing animals is also silly. Some family of mine has a farm near a state wildlife area. From time to time some group or other releases animals there for diversity or to put animals back in the habitat. Thing is, there already ARE animals out there, plenty of them and they don't like the newcomers. The local critters kill the newcomers, often right in the front yard. I've seen birds drive a newly released bird down into the river and drown it. They've been told this happens but they keep bringing fresh animals to the slaughter anyway.

Links? We don't need no stinkin' links...

Here's a bit of pop culture I don't understand. Why do people text so much? Yes, I know it has its uses, but why drag a conversation out by texting back and forth for a half an hour when you could get the whole thing done with one five minute phone call? It's like a technological devolution. What's next, a telegraph app for the iPhone?

I wonder this every day.

I'm of the "millennium generation" or some such h@+@&+$#%, so when I tell people that I never learned how to send text messages, they look at me like I'm a spy from Planet X.

The reason I heard from a younger friend...is that people text because they don't want to actualy talk to the person.

Yeah...I know it makes no sense to me either but that was the answear.

Maybe it's just my old-fashioned thinking, but if I don't want to talk to someone, I usually try to keep any conversation as short as possible...or I just don't talk to them.

I can sorta see it...as if I just want to confirm plans...or just say 'I am on my way' etc...I will send a text.

But they(the younger generation that is) get into a text conversation just to aviod a actual conversation...that just makes no sense to me.
