Well, that's one way to do it!

Spoiler:
But, the kobold's eyes are still swirly, so I guess he's not dead!

He's as good at it as Belkar is at tracking :)

Reminds me of something you could do in the console game The Bard's Tale that came out in the early 2000s (not to be confused with the CRPG from the 80s)...

Spoiler:

You gained the ability to summon various creatures to help you in your quest. One was a little wrinkled man that you just sent to wander down the dungeon halls ahead of you and set off all the traps. They had rather amusing animations of the little dude getting squashed and zapped. The game had a rather sick sense of humor, but it WAS one way to deal with traps...

That one had me in tears.

I sense an alignment change coming in the future.

Per Rich Burlew, the three ($1250 level) A short OOTS Story stories will be about Therkla, the Cliffport Cops, and a pre-Order Belkar story, subject to change. I just thought everyone should know. also, he appears alive and "well". We will find out about his post Kickstarter Drive sanity later. ~grins~

Rich also said this about the eight PDF stories "I will also be releasing them as I finish them."

Mindblowing... one and a quarter MEEEELLLION dollars. Go Rich!

Gah! My pay went in too late to make a pledge. I'd've done it much earlier if I didnt have to decide between the swanky rewards...

It's good to see how quickly the updates are coming. After that epic Team Evil scene I was worried things would slow down again in the next boring bit between confrontations...

Glad to see my worries were misplaced.

I think I may have been the last person to donate. Or the next to last. I forgot untill almost noon and then had to explain to my home-because-he's-ill hubby what and why (he's not a fan) and wade through the set up an account before I could. I managed just as our clock said 12:03.

Can someone read the writing on the wall

also

Spoiler:

Massive amounts of dead people

What an amazing story. I remember I didn't enjoy it overmuch back in the Dragon magazine days, but it's truly truly blossomed.

Wow.

Spoiler:
Maybe it's just an illusion?

The Dragon magazine strip was actually a spin-off of the webcomic (it came a year or two after the webcomic started, IIRC), and was always meant to be largely brief and jokey, without much of a storyline. It was entirely standalone of the webcomic--you won't see any of the webcomic strips in Dragon magazine and vice versa.

If you haven't read the webcomic from the start, I highly recommend it (though it's so long now it will take quite a lot of time).

A strong one, to affect Belkar so far downwind.

But still plausible that that's what it is.

There was an interesting theory I saw at the OOTS forums as to another possibility...

Spoiler:

Since the "Draketooth" family might have draconic ancestry, it's possible they all died when V cast the familicide spell.

The only problem with that is these corpses seem about a week or so old at most (still attracting bugs and have lots of flesh) and that happened something like a month ago or so in story time.

I say it is an illusion. All the people Belkar smelled are there, but them being dead was cast just before they arrived.
V's true seeing spell will reveal the truth.

I think that the illusion argument is too obvious. Maybe Penelope is somehow involved

Wow good call. Wonder how V and the others will react

And how lucky are we that a certain other red-headed family isn't in that lineage?

V, youse has some splaning ta do!

Upon reading the last strip, my mouth dropped and literally hung open for at least two minutes.

Scarab Sages Contributor, RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4, Legendary Games

Oh sh**!

Wow. Just wow.

"Draketooth"? Yep. Ouch.

Dammit. I didn't think

Spoiler:
familicide would do that. I thought it only had 3 degrees of seperation as per V's description.

and that theories been around since the casting of familiacide that it would kill Girard draketooth. Some epileptic trees bear fruit!

Oh, yeah! Unexpected consequences. How do I love these as a GM!

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

That... was awesome.

And now a message from Dave Thomas on the benefits of adoption. ;-)

Rich tells one hell of a story.

Liberty's Edge

Wow. . . Mind = Blown. I'd heard the theories but I never really believed them. Poor V.

I'm still waiting for the organization that V made a deal with to start taking turns with his/her/it's soul, maybe we will get to see one of the jump at this opportunity before V fesses up to making the deal in the first place.

I didn't realize that theory had been around. I don't read the GitP boards, so this strip caught me off guard. Unexpected consequences of actions.

I'm wondering how V is going to explain what he did.

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

I admit, I was expecting familicide to be the cause of the deaths going into the strip, and yet, my jaw still hit the floor and I had to describe the comic to my wife who could not possibly care less. This strip is proof that it's as much about the way the story is told as about the story itself.

It depends on you interpret what V said.

"Every living creature that directly shares your bloodline."

That seems easy - should be all descendants and all ancestors, including aunts and uncles.

"Every living creature that is directly related to any of those creatures is also dead."

This is more complicated depending on the definition of "related," but the speculation on the OotS boards is that this clause hit Penelope, Tarquin's wife. She wasn't a Draketooth by blood, she had a child in the Draketooth line (which is also the Dragon's line). As such, she was directly related to a creature that meets the first clause.

This is why you don't trust necromancers that are just souls.

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

No, this is why you don't make a deal with a devil / daemon / demon.

Hey now, we are in no way liable for what the elf did of its own volition. We are honestly shocked at the level of depravity shown by the elf and its willful misuse of the power we granted. What's more we in no way endorse this sort of behavior and will be taking appropriate action to ensure our power isn't so misused again.

Now I want to go back and check exactly what was said about the spell at the time, can anyone tell me the number of the strip where v cast the spell?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

Its 639, and I've just got sucked back into vintage OOTS. Now at 662 ... :-)

Am I the only one wondering if this was part of the plan of the demon/devil/daemon trio? Have one of the souls suggest that V use that particular spell, knowing that in that state of mind he would use it, and that it would hit the draketooth family? It not only clears an obstacle in Xykons path and sets V for a fall, it also eliminates several dozens of good aligned adventurers.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

I don't know if they had foreseen that in particular, but I'm sure they knew V would be heavily tempted to use a spell with monumentally dangerous consequences that V, in zer rage, would not stop to consider.

The Evil Trio has no reason to do anything to help Xykon, in particular. Now, I don't know how the Evil Trio feels about the Snarl. They might want to help the Snarl--but OTOH, they may have no interest in its release, because it would potentially devour souls that they'd then have no chance of ever corrupting (in which case, this situation may have even created unintended consequences for them as well).

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

I would suspect the goal of the ICC is similar to Redcloak's: use the Snarl to kill gods. Possibly good gods, but it could just as easily be the gods of the lower planes, allowing the ICC to take over.

Scarab Sages Contributor, RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4, Legendary Games

I got sucked into rereading that stretch of strips a few weeks ago. Still awesome! :)

That's a possibility. If that's true, I wonder if they'd consider Redcloak a potential ally/tool or a threat.

Both. Remember, via the Redcloak he wears he knows the ritual. If the ICC does not, they need him until they can swoop in to seize control.

This is why really good GMs are always listening to their players commenting on what happened and what is likely to happen : to get crazy wonderful ideas you would not have ever thought about by yourself to make their characters' lives even more miserable.

Also why very good players never mention ideas (especially conspiracy theories) that could screw their characters even more when the GM is listening. No need to give him even more bad ideas.

Poor V

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

I wonder if ...

... this will break V's concentration on the Dominate Monster spell he/she as been maintaining on the Kobold.

I know players that will actually deliberately mention such ideas to GMs without fear. In anticipation in fact. I done that myself occasionally.

Dominate person requires around one round of concentration per twenty four hours so it probably won't break it.

Lack of Foresight

Looks like Rich Burlew just answered all the questions about how far reaching Familicide is.
