V's familiar is certainly a highlight of the comic; and probably a pleasant surprise to Rich how much he could mine the character for sarcastic quips as well as act as an audience surrogate.

I also like how Rich set up the frames/gutters for the giant-killing sequence. Belkar's never been my favorite character but he lends himself nicely to action sequences!

Wow. Normally this much activity would mean that the comic has been updated.

So... it looks like that much activity in the thread caused the comic to update. Seems legit.

Often I think the Evil characters are the smartest members of the strip. Which just made me worried about that damn raven ;-P
Same alignment as V.

What if / when V changes alignment ? South of Neutral is known territory to V (Familicide)

How did the raven fare then ?

Traitorous avian is traitorous.

That's why I mentioned it as I did.

I believe familiars alignments simply match their masters by virtue of the the bond of being a familiar. Sharing a soul and all that.

So alignment change means alignment change (or familiar loss).

I could be wrong, of course. Beyond that, it could be interpreted differently, depending on the GM. I know in PF that's not strictly true (and may not have been true in 3.X - I no longer recall), with the Improved Familiar feat, but that's an exception to the general rule.

That said, V is definitely undergoing an arc of repentance for those misdeeds and possible upswing back toward neutrality. So it may very well be an over-all wash.

Heh.

Definitely greedy bauble-hungry...

I don't think V ever had an evil alignment. S/he has always been neutral, but made a VERY evil mistake that was worthy of a major GM warning and redemption arc to come back from it.

Maybe I was wrong. Maybe we really are coming up on a mutiny. Or the crew will pressure Bandana to finally back down. Or Andi will take a hit and Bandana will be overwhelmed by her remorse, realizing that she's always Help how do I get the shipping goggles off

Hop over to GitP and ask Rich to disillusion you?

Guessing which types of attacks your opponent forgot to ward against is ultimately just a more elaborate version of Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Rich has illustrated many of the games Iconic creatures and monsters.

Which ones has he not yet gotten to in the comics that you want him to illustrate before the series concludes?

But what happened to Roy and Elan? Aren't they supposed to still be on the ship with the crew?

Maybe they've headed down stair to figure out a better plan?

I'm really curious what Roy and Elan are doing, right now.

Yay! Counterspell! When I played a wizard that never worked, though.

Improved Counterspell. That feat goes a long way towards making that tactic worthwhile. A chance to play defense for a change goes a long way too.

It also helps when you have a big battle with mages close to your level, as opposed to a single high-level enemy.

It also helps when said PC is prepared to fight that way. Most of my arcane spellcasters NEVER did much counterspelling, more like reactionary spell casting.

But again that's why V gets paid the big bucks.

Also I think Roy and Elan are probably trying to keep the mutiny down. Maybe.

If you're smart, it can be very effective. It's easier to work it into a strategy when you know that the opposing caster is about to cast a devastating or otherwise important spell. In this case, V knew that the giant cleric was going to cast something that he'd been saving on the airship (because the airship had just moved into range), and V's strategy worked.

And most of you already knew that, but that segues really nicely into an anecdote about one of my characters!

I played a cleric during a fight that our party was in with a Spirit Naga that had a charming gaze ability. She already had some thralls, and she literally charmed most of the party before even the surprise round. My cleric cast Magic Circle against Evil to try and get some of our charmed allies back, but making the saves to become un-charmed was slow going. This did, however, free our illusionist-type to cast an opaque illusion around the naga's head to stop further gaze attacks. (The illusion was of a flaming sun that surrounded the naga's head, if you're curious.) During this time, lots of PCs/allies and thralls were fighting each other, and one of the PCs was bleeding out. A now-non-charmed NPC gave my cleric a powerful healing scroll to save the PC. My cleric used the last of his turn to move next to the PC. Everyone was expecting me to have him cast the scroll, but instead, I waited, exactly as Vaarsuvius did in the most recent comic. Everyone was freaking out, but I had already told the GM that I was waiting for the next time the naga cast a spell, and when that happened, my cleric's counterspell hit. The GM did a great job of describing the battle of magical wills that nobody could see, and my cleric coming out on top.

The GM described the naga screaming in frustration, and it was SO SATISFYING. My cleric healed the PC, and the naga was dead a couple rounds later. After the battle, the GM revealed that the spell I counterspelled was a dispel magic that the naga was going to successfully cast on the illusion that was blocking her charming gaze. I got lots of kudos after that adventure, let me tell you, and that's what I thought of when I saw V use the same strategy, here. Awesome.

More giants, natch.

Another tribe? Or is that someone else with only a passing resemblance to frost giants?

They look like they're carrying greataxes. My bet: Barbarians. Note the placement. They can just jump onto the ship.

That there's a nail biter, make no mistake...

And people wonder why Odin tried to kill off Frost Giants...

It wasn't for XP folks, I can tell you that!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Minor Prediction: This is how Belkar dies. He disrupts the barbarians and saves the ship, but the crew mutinies, preventing the Order from going back for his body.

I doubt it'll happen, but this is one potential instance.

The Elder frost giant forgets about another high-level arcane spellcaster who is still on the ship IIRC ;-)

True, but I think he might just be what tips the scales in the coming strips ;-)

Elan is at least a 13th level bard. He can cast Mass CLW. He's got at least a level of "Dashing Swordsman," so he's about on par with the others, more or less.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My mistake then, expert person. I still am not clear how if he's 13th level, that no one else is on par with that. I mean we don't see V casting 7th spells right?

V has been casting Prismatic Spray for a long time now.

V has also cast Power Word Blind (Level 7) and Stun (Level 8).
