Guys, for serious: Protection from evil works wonders against undead evil things dominating you. This is a weapon against Durkula.

Yep. I'm with ShadowcatX on this one. Belkar is prepping for round 2 with Durkula.

Seconded. Motion carried.

I would be amused to see Belkar trying to "do good deeds" in order to shift his alignment away from Evil so he could use the clasp. And then , in the heat of the moment, doing something selfless.

Liberty's Edge

I do not get why the Protection from Evil hurts Belkar. I thought it only protected against evil. Not that it hurt evil creatures using it.

Flavor probably. Or a custom item that penalizes evil users, like holy weapon or good aligned intelligent item do among the core items.

Doesn't Protection from evil prevent the wearer from being touched by evil creatures? Not so much a stretch to assume it is because of physical aversion, and it would cause greater evils pain.

Or, it could just be Burlew's way of reminding readers that Belker is still Evil, despite his recent actions.

Only by by summoned evil beings (or summoned non-evil beings that happen to be summoned by evil spells).

That's the narrative reason for the scene regardless of the mechanisms hiding behind it in-world.

Another possible explanation of mechanisms would be that in Burlew's universe protection from evil might painfully repels evil beings from the protected creature or object.

Very good catch. Thank you :-)

Belker is awesome. I'm loving and dreading this at the same time. Well played, Rich. Well played.

I'm just going to point this out.

Belkar

as opposed to

belker

Belker is a rouge, correct?

No, a belker is an evil creature from the Elemental Plane of Air.

Belkar is a ranger (possibly with a level of barbarian, I can't remember).

You sure? I could have sworn there was some rouge in there somewhere...

Oh never mind I found it.

It was a joke. I tossed in the rogue vs. rouge thing to your Belkar vs. belker thing.

If it makes you feel better I got the joke.

Sorry, that sort of thing makes me twitchy. It's like the other day when I was watching a video on YouTube, and the guy kept pronouncing "sniper" as "snerper." After a while, I realized he was doing it on purpose, but I still wanted to reach through the monitor and slap him.

Me too. Actually the last ten or so threads on the forums I read made sense and was upbeat.

So I am going to quit and get some sleep while I am ahead.

Pax in our time.

New strip !!!

"Personally, I've never really felt the need for one at all." Hilarious :-))

Trouble seems to be not so far behind. Which one is of the green variety ? And how did it know where to find them ?

That's got Thog written all over it. I am sure he's going to be in some kind of vengeance mode over Nale's death and wouldn't be surprised if Sabine's directing him.

Given Thog's lack of stealth skills, I think this is more likely Bozzok from the Greysky City Thieves' Guild. He does have quite a beef with Haley and 'Uncle' Geoff did tell Bozzok that she was headed towards the North Pole. He might have made a reasonable guess as to likely stopping ports along the way to stake out.

Silver Crusade

Or it could just be a no name goblin spy sent by Red Cloak.

I agree that it's probably not Thog, though. Subtlety isn't his style.

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

Clearly, it's the cousin of the half-orc ninja (the one who fell in love with Elan and sacrificed herself) come for revenge.

(I like the Bozzok theory)

Bozzok is most likely - it was foreshadowed.

Do I remember correctly that Bandana is lesbian or have I confused her with character from other strip?

She is indeed.

Makes a lot more sense now that everyone mentions it. I stand corrected.

That "WANDS" cell would make a good T-shirt design.

Silver Crusade

I'd call this confirmation that it's Bozzok. That storyline is definitely back, in a very unexpected way.

Ruthless, gruesome and maybe even cause for some remorse. Very well done.

Oh yeah - this has suddenly taken a nasty turn in Gnomeville.

Undead? I wonder...

Considering how far Elan bounced after that punch, and the stitches, could it be a flesh golem version of Crystal? Similar to the bone golem Roy in that long sequence after he died.

Why wouldn't Bozzok make nice with an upset golemcrafter in his quest to ensure his iron grip doesn't let someone slip out?

My first impression was revenant. If Crystal turned spontaneously after her death it would explain why she wasn't resurrected...

Ahhh, yes, that could also be an option, sort of like a free-willed frankenstein

Dark Archive

That definitely looks like a flesh golem Crystal.

Look at her attack.

Crystal's speech balloon is a color that we have not seen before. Have we seen any talking flesh golems?

Xykon, Durkula, and the the undead created by Tsukiko all have black speech balloons with white letters. Interestingly, Malack has a normal speech balloon.

In the bonus strips in DstP, Crystal kills Grubwiggler, so I don't think it would be very likely that Grubwiggler would be both alive and working together with the thieves guild.

He was disguising himself as a living being prior to that scene.

So I just got the "Blood Runs in The Family" book as a gift. I think there's some interesting details in Rich's commentary - mostly in what he had to say about setting up Tarquin and Malack's characters and what he was doing in the process of having the characters develop through the story arc. Given how much debate there was about the characters both as villains and approachable characters, it is good to hear the author's own take.

The other thing - more obviously - is how smoothly this story runs in book format. Sometimes, you can read a strip in OOTS and come back much later and not have lost much. The Tarquin arc, given the spread out nature of Rich's web postings, really lost momentum at times. In book form, it definitely reads much better to he overall plot.

Just a thought: if Crystal is undead an not speaking flesh golem then the cure moderate wounds wand that Elan got last strip might see actual use faster than we expected...

Apparently Bandana first impression was the same as mine.

So maybe Grubwiggler is involved as well - given that was his specialty and Haley caused him all kinds trouble in getting Roy's body back.
