Durkon used (greater?) planar ally, not summon monster IX. Summon monster doesn't last till midnight.

Edit: A Hamatula is 12 HD, so just regular planar ally.

Dang it, 137ben! I just spent two hours reading about what the Monster in the Darkness might be. Arg! It's like linking tv tropes!

"He's standing behind you doing the voiceover through a can."

+1 for total genre humor!

If only I had my own voiceovers for everything I read.

I don't know if leaving that sword leaning against the railing of the ship is a wise idea.

Like how Blackwing is becoming a character too, as well as the ending. Mr Burlew's muse is clearly working it's mojo.

Julio is smart about taking a vacation. He's genre aware enough to know if he hangs around he's gonna die. Loan Elan the +X anarchic rapier and get the hell out of the way.

Edit: If his chaos sabre is better than a +3 keen rapier (what he gave to Elan last time), that's a heck of a sword.

They are going on level 15 or so. A +3 Keen just doesn't cut it anymore.

Particularly since it does piercing damage, not slashing damage. (Just being a stickler for accuracy here, sorry.)

You've got keen observation skills, but I don't think you should be quite so cutting with your remarks. Your sharp wit won't win you many friends that way. Do you get my point?

I'm wondering if Dashing Swordsmen can get a penalty for Trying Too Hard.

I'd... really love to see that class in a write up some day. That would be amazing.

I saw a write up on it floating around the internet once. You could probably find it with Google.

Yes, but if they take the Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel feat, which delays the penalties for a number of rounds equal to their prestige class level.

So noted. Well played.

As I said in the stickied 944 discussion thread, a heavy talk like this followed by a snap back to humor is exactly the kind of thing that makes me love Roy.

944: All of the Above, Actually

Holy... Wait...

Is that why he went to Fighter college to be a Fighter instead of learning to be a Wizard? Because he had an experiment go wrong and kill his little brother?

*Mind explode*

It makes sense. Roy has a high Intelligence. He probably would have made a good Wizard.

Wow.

Uh... I haven't thought about that possibility...

Ouch.
And with reading the back-reference to #496, it makes me despise Eugene that much more. If you ever wanted a poster-child for why wizards should not be allowed to run everything, the elder Greenhilt ranks right up there with Xin and the Runelords. >:(

Ah. Okay. Thanks for that back research Trace Coburn. Looks like Roy is talking about his dad, but Roy feels guilty that he didn't try harder to stop his dad.

It still explains why he didn't pursue Magic.

The thing is, he actually gave the elf exactly the advice Vaarsuvius needs. "But you care. You know you screwed up, and want to make it right. I've been told that trying counts for a lot."

Yeah, thanks for pointing out that back story that most of us forgot. :)

Ironically, my mind went to Roy's time in the afterlife, too, but for a completely different reason. Roy's comment to V that Lord Frye just quoted reminded me of the conclusion of Roy's own after life review:

Quote:
"You're trying to be Lawful Good. People forget how crucial it is to keep trying, even if they screw it up now and then. They figure if they can't manage it perfectly every waking second, then they should just pick some other alignment because it'll be easier. But it's the struggle that matters. It's easy for a being of pure Law and Good to live up to these ideals, but you're a mortal. What matters is that when you blow it, you get back up on the horse and try again. You... well, your record is full of grey spots, but you never stop working at improving it. That's what's important."

Thats why his LITTLE brother was in heaven.

Also Roy's dad was the one that made the big kaboom (and apparently never admited he was wrong) which explains a lot of Roys relationship with his father.

Agree with a lot of this. Thanks Trace and Itchy for the reference link. Given what he says in the current strip - that back strip suddenly makes a lot more sense. Interesting stuff.

Or could it be that Roy was the one actually doing the magic under the supervision of his father ? And that he did not dare disobey his father who was pushing him to do it, even though he felt something was wrong ?

That would make it even worse on his father's part IMO : shifting the blame on his kid.

I know that it does not make sense in DnD's system, but the way Roy words his sentence "When I was younger, I ... knew a wizard" is VERY much the usual way of not saying "When I was younger, I was a wizard".

The accident that killed his baby brother happened 18 years ago. How old was Roy at that time ?

It would make sense based on this strip alone, but with the back research Trace found, it's pretty clear. "It wasn't my job to watch the grown-up. But... I still should have done something."

That's very much an "I didn't interfere" not an "I didn't disobey".

I considered that possibility as well, but came to the same conclusion that thejeff did.

I thought so at first. Then I considered that the opposite of that specific sentence was that it was the grown-up's job to watch what Roy was doing (and ensure that nothing went wrong).

Granted, I am likely reading far too much in this, but really Itchy's hypothesis did strike a chord with me ;-)

Still no input on Roy's age at the time of his brother's death 18 years ago ?

No, that doesn't make sense because everyone saw an ocean when they looked through the portal. Laurin just happened to think she could exploit said ocean.

So I guess when Roy chopped up the shell containing the Rift, the Rift was not in fact destroyed? What was the deal with the whole ziggurat exploding then? A defense mechanism perhaps?

Roy never destroyed the rift, he destroyed the gate, which kept the rift sealed.

Right, I forgot how the rules work. It's been a long time since the Sapphire Gate got crazy paladin'd.

Looks like someone kicked the hornet's nest to life. Get the impression the Snarl may not quite be what we think it is, but it is still dangerous.

Oh. Snap.

At least that was my first thought, as in

Spoiler:
An ocean planet... without any fish... but that everyone thinks is super-dangerous. And might be interested in someone making telepathic content?

At the low end, a planet of aboleth.

At the high end, a planet of Cthulhu.

Thoughts?

I think the snarl is trying to create its own world, but doesn't know enough about things it hasn't sucked in to do so on his own.

Or perhaps the Snarl has destroyed every bit of life on the planet on the other side of the portal and is looking for new worlds to make void of life.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As far as I can recall, this is the first time anything actually came out of a rift, and it only did so when Laurin telepathically probed it. That violent response could have just been some sort of feedback, as opposed to proof that the Snarl exists. That's kind of anticlimactic though, so probably not.

Because Rich Burlew is cruel, I doubt we'll get the resolution to this anytime soon. The next panel will probably be back on the airship. But it'd be cool if, further down the line, Laurin and Co. show up all zombified/enslaved by whatever blasted them.

I can't find the strip number right now, but in one of the early "crayon" backstory comics when the first Rift was found part of the Snarl came through and impaled and killed the significant other of one of the group of wizards that built the Gates.
