Nope, I apparently hallucinated that. Or inferred it from "third-party prestige class found in the discount bin".
I find it amusing that you corrected yourself in the same thread within 6 minutes. Aren't you supposed to wait for someone to yell: "Nu-uh!" first? ;-)

I went looking for the citation. And I both found I was wrong and discovered how long ago Captain Scoundrel was introduced (more than half the the strips ago).

See! Things are back to normal in forum world! Now, back to Julio's prestige class and Tarquin's AOO move questions.

I keep forgetting that the whole Tarquin/Desert Gate thing has been running for 2 years now, so I am little surprised when I realize that the Julio Scoundrel's was introduced in 2006.
FYI - I think Rich has mentioned doing a solo Scoundrel story as part of the Kickstarter package he did last year.

Affirmative. The promised PDF's for backers are:

-O-Chul backstory
-Belkar backstory (delivered)
-Therkla backstory
-CPPD backstory
-Julio Scoundrel backstory
-Dim Sun story
-Sir Francois (back?)story
-Haleo & Julelan story (delivered)

Rich has been plugging away. He also has completed two of the four "Monster for Every Season" paper mini sets. They are awesome!

Back on topic:
I agree. The whole point of Elan's plan is to defeat Tarquin by showing that:
a: Story Tropes are not always how the world works.
b: It's not all about Tarquin, he's a backstory bit in a larger story.

Also, I fully expect Rich to surprise me once again and get me Giggling along the way.

-Aaron

Random commentary related to the new strip's title: Getting carried away. Rich has really been doing a lot of puns lately - I just wonder how if it is difficult or just comes naturally to him?

My guess as the life-partner of a comics writer : he asks his family and friends for ideas whenever he is stuck ;-)

V should be very depleted of spells, but it's hard to imagine Laurin has many power points remaining, either.

This might be solved with single casting - with each making their best, most cunning choice.

Spoiler:
I am somewhat hoping that the Blackwing (that's the raven's name, right?) will be the deciding factor in this fight.

Laurin has as much power as the story demands. She could still be able to cast 50 disintegrates in a row. She'll run out when she runs out.

Plus there is still that favor thing she talekd about so she at least won't die.

An antimagic field would be good right about now.

Assuming Magic/Psionic transparency.

That's the default rule. It's also something most groups use. And not including it would be more confusing for non-D&D readers (who make up a significant portion of the readers, according to the author) who aren't clear on the distinctions between psionics and magic. It seems very, very unlikely that the Giant would 'house-rule' in the comic to remove magic-psionic transparency, at least to me.

You're probably right. I'm just pointing out the possibility.

I hope to see it mostly because I think it would be suitably ironic for V to pull it out as a tactic when casterfight is being spouted and it looks like it's going down.

Baring some magic item that allows him to escape Tarquin would also be in very bad trouble if he somehow loses Lauren's magic to aid him. He would have no easy way off the ship other than jumping and would soon get swarmed by pretty much everybody else on the ship, including the rest of the Order, maybe even healed up and Julio, except the few people that could take care of a useless Lauren. Even if Tarquin is much higher level than most of them near countless grapple checks with potentially dozens if aid others behind it and he's done especially with a ticked off rogue and vampire that can go to work on him while pinned.

Ah well, my only thought after this comic is that Rich has set this up now in such a way that the Tarquin story line pretty much has to end right here, one way or another.

I'm more surprised that Roy didn't expect Tarquin to keep pressing the attack, knowing they were teleporting the whole time.

Now I wonder - will it be the caster fight (casterfight) - or will the Order play against the story again.

Anyway, IT IS ON!

Don't think that Tarquin will walk away from this (falling is an option) and I also think that instead of snapping Hayley's arm he should have snapped her neck......

Probably only because he wanted Elan to watch helplessly as he killed her. That (based on the look he had) was more straight up 'that hurt' response I think.

Theres a few disabling strike/stat penalty strikes in the game that could be flavored as the arm breaking, but the game doesn't let you say "called shot to snap the neck. I win they die"

Tarquin's last chance to walk away from this was when Julio was pulled away.

But by that point, he was too angry that Elan was not accepting his story definition that he is not thinking anymore.

I think that trope reference sums it up nicely based on what's happened.

V normally has dimensional anchor prepared. Wonder if that will stop Laurin's wormholes?

Then again, using dimensional anchor would have been useful way earlier in this saga, so V either didn't prepare it today or already cast it and I've forgotten. (I mean, it's been like a 18 months of strips since they last got to prepare spells.)

2 people marked this as a favorite.

According to Durkon, he didn't prepare it because V normally does. My guess would be that either (a)the author forgot about that line, and decided dimensional anchor would mess up several portions of the plot, (b)V cast it off-panel here, between wormholes, and Miron or Laurin dispelled it immediately, or (c)both (a) and (b).

Well, I was really hoping Tarquin would become one of the, what is it 3 or 4, different factions going for the gates that the Oracle talked about. I really kinda wanted to see a throwdown between Xykon and Tarquin. Where Tarquin tries to fight to see who is the main villian and Xykon keeps asking "Who is this guy?" Or as Tarquin is rushing head-long at Xykon screaming he is the main villian he gets disintigrated by Xykon and makes a comment that he looked like that one blonde guy from that one dungeon.

Xykon and Redcloak are still en-route to the (now remains of) Girard's gate. This would not be a bad moment for them to show up. They can't skip to the last gate because the Oracle said they would be at Girard's first.

They were already there. Based on Roy's question, I'm pretty sure that prophecy is satisfied.

How did I forget the Silicon elemental? (Actually a Silicon/Oxygen paraelemental)

Ross Byers wrote:

It was a while ago. I had to look it up because I'd kinda thought they'd arrived, but had totally forgotten the details.

Yeah, umbrella monster had to con Xykon into leaving to keep the Order from being totally wiped out.

Only recently caught the title's pun. Quite a few hands around indeed between V's spell and Tarquin's threat :-))

He's a wizard who knew he had access to Laurin's wormholes. He probably didn't prepare any teleportation today.

... or he is delaying intentionally - gambling that Tarquin will be killed so he won't have to make good on his owed favor.

Or, he wasn't sure where he needs to teleport to, since after going through several wormholes in a desert with no noticeable features he wouldn't be sure where he was, and he might not have a way to teleport to "wherever Tarquin is" without knowing where Tarquin is.

I don't recall if there were any hints to his specialization - if any - what are strong and weak sides of his spellcasting.

Lord Fyre wrote:

He's making good on the favor by being there and fighting. As is, if Targuin lives, Tarquin could insist he's still owed the favor because Miron didn't stick it out. ("I just had soup! That's not a meal!")

If he's not back, he either can't, or has a good reason to wait.

He could be in worse shape than it appeared and now is lying disabled at the safe point. Or just feels that he's too weak to participate, and does not want to risk his own life, especially if Tarquin lost it over the trivial matter.

Liberty's Edge

Or he is gathering reinforcements (ie, the rest of Tarquin's party).

And getting a new healer.

I would imagine that even if willing getting a way to teleport back if he doesn't have one handy, finding out where Tarquin is since he has moved, and getting healed would take more than a few seconds. It's possible he figures by the time he can get that stuff arranged the fight is going to be over anyhow which it probably will be.

Although, I would find it hilarious if he teleports back to the place he was at and finds out he still useless as he has no way of getting to the ship speeding off in the distance with Tarquin on it.

If he knows all that's going on that might even be the best course. He doesn't have to further risk himself, might get Tarquin killed if he wants that, and will have better plausible deniability for not doing his best to get back into the action yet still appear as he tried to do his part thus saying he honored their deal in good faith as he can claim he could only get one teleport in such a short time and didn't have a way to fly.
