The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. -HPL

Every now and then, each of us stumbles upon some new fact about the world we live in that makes us shake our head, close our eyes, and possibly drool a little.

This thread is for sharing those links and experiences. Enjoy.

I think sitting in the back of a Willies Jeep while my father drove us around the bush from one amazing place to the next...singing the Barber of Seville Opera or reciting 'The Man from Snowy River' line perfect while we sit there with our fingers in our ears. If there are a few things that you will ever miss from your childhood - it is the moment when your Parents have dragged you to the top of a Mountain and tells you to look up hill, you realize that it goes on forever. If you are ever going to realize that you can see forever - it is because your Parents have shown it to you.

What is in the water in Ecuador?

A shrunken head is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. The skull is taken out, and the skin turned inside out.

bu... bu... bu... but why?

Charles Babbage plays a game of chess against the amazing, mechanical chess playing machine named The Mechanical Turk. So, amazed, and thoroughly enthralled by the notion a machine can carry out "thinking" by mechanical means, Charles Babbage goes on to invent the Difference Engine. In doing so, he becomes the father of computing.

Now... the Mechanical Turk was a hoax. There was a midget, grandmaster chess player carefully tucked away inside the box.

If Charles Babbage had known there was a little man inside, he may have become a pastry chef instead. And none of us would now have a cell phone.

Gotta love Radiolab. Don't listen to it much anymore--I keep pushing it back in order to listen to Atomic Array.

The whole DFTD issue has gotten pretty bad in recent years. It's mentioned extensively in Margaret Mittelbach's Carnivorous Nights, and, if I'm not mistaken, David Quammen's Song of the Dodo.

I have become strangely addicted to >this song< . This youtube video does not have great quality, but I think the concept comes through ok:

My philosophy of the world has been changed by it. I now see that the existance of a H.P. Lovecraft cover band *proves* the universe is meant to be a playground. No worries man... it will all be ok.

LOL
