Advice for Adventure (5E)

4th Edition

Heloooo Paizo!

I'm prepping for my first homebrew module-which, weirdly enough, I'm not freaking out about-for a party with no arcane casters.

This is the party makeup (we used the point buy, so there's equal stats):

  • Wood elf ranger 2
  • Hill dwarf cleric (Light domain) 2
  • Human fighter 2
  • Human rogue 2

I'm here to ask for advice!

The premise is that a cleric of Death has unleashed a magical... not plague exactly, but more like a viral curse, that saps the strength from people and puts it into their shadows, eventually making their shadows become independent and malevolent when they die. Simple investigation, right? But the problem is, the Dawn Tournament-which is basically a way for rookie adventurers to get famous-is taking place while this is happening, and the characters have to both compete in there while trying to find out the source of the problem.

I have a few details, but not enough: to find a way to combat the plague, the characters must escort a prominent sage to an ancient library that is infested with demons, undead, and unnatural abominations. During the CTF round of the tournament, the villain will unleash a horde of zombies and skeletons onto the battleground that will pose a threat to all the teams and indeed the city, but will have to convince the other teams to put aside their lust for victory in favor of combatting the army.

Any other ideas?

Hmmm... have the group search for clues within the tournament. Is one of the contestants a contact with information about the plague's origins? Does the tournament organizer have enemies that might be tied to the virus?

I would also make sure to include perhaps a team is explicitly evil, either under the command of whoever the actual villain is, or perhaps just opportunistic sadists who take advantage of the zombie attack to try to win the tournament.

Just some thoughts.

The organizer is the church of Akandilur, who is the goddess of light, honor, justice, and the sun. Kinda like a fusion of Iomedae and Sarenrae. They were the ones who originally sealed the big bad (an ancient red shadow dragon) who is now attempting to free himself from Shadowfell. The person who has unleashed the virus is a follower of the dragon and has divine powers, but isn't actively helping him get free. The dragon, as it nearly destroyed the world last time, isn't something that the church wants people to know about, as there's bound to be some insane person who wants to harness its power. This kind of magic hasn't been seen since the dragon first appeared-which was over 5000 years ago (the dragon has been subtly nipping technology in the bud so that the world will be unprepared to face him, thus explaining the medieval stasis), and so the records were lost-except for a mad conspiracy theorist who knows where it is. However, the church believes that they can handle the problem on their own, and the library contains dangerous magic. So they will try to stymie the PC's attempts to find it and the theorist.

Cool. That sounds like good information.

I wouldn't worry about having no arcane casters. Ours just gets us in trouble....

;-)

EDIT:

And you might end up with an Arcane Trickster and/or an Eldritch Knight.

Our party has both.

And a Light cleric has some of the good wizard spells, like fireball!
