One thing that I have noticed is that girls and girlfriends tend to pick two character classes. One of the classes is the Barbarian. The other class I have noticed that girls often pick is the druid. The class seems to be magnetic.
The druid class I have found to be one of the most complicated classes to play. It is a real challenge and I have been playing for a very long time.
Now I Hope this isn’t insulting nor do I intend it to be, but I was thinking of putting an alternate druid class together that would be simpler to play and easier to grasp for a novice player.

Wise Woman or Shaman (Alternate Spontaneous casting druid)

Role: This character class is designed for someone who wants to have the flavor of a druid, but perhaps doesn’t want the complexity. It is supposed to be a support character class. I also thought it would be interesting to put together a spontaneous caster for the druid, just as there is the Wizard and Sorcerer, the Cleric and Oracle

Alignment: any Neutral

Hit dice: d8

Class Skills: Climb, Craft, Fly, Handle Animal, Heal, Knowledge: Geography, Knowledge Nature, Perception, Profession, Ride, Spellcraft, Stealth, Survival, and Swim

Skill Ranks per Level: 4 + Intelligence modifier

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Shaman’s are proficient with all Simple weapons except crossbows. They are not proficient with Crossbows. They are also proficient with the scimitar, Scythe, and short bow and long bow.

They are proficient with Light and Medium armor but are prohibited from wearing metal armor. Thus they may only wear padded leather or hide armor. They are also proficient with shields but must use wooden ones.

Spells: Shamans or Wise women cast spells that are drawn from the Druid list. They cast spells spontaneously. They have a limited number of spells known. Wisdom determons both how high a level of spell they can cast ( a wisdom = 10+ spell level) and the DC for the saving throw 10 + spell level+ wisdom modifier. They get bonus spells per day based on a high wisdom. The spells known are fixed to the table progresson.

A Shaman or wise woman gains her spells during an hour of meditation.

A shaman or wise woman casts spells Spontaneously. They Add all of the spells with the “Cure” as part of the name to their list of Spells known. These spells become available to them as they gain acess to the spells. Also For a Shaman or wise woman Cure light wounds is a 1st level spell Cure moderate wounds a 2nd level spell, Cure serious wounds a 3rd level spell and Cure Critical wounds a 4th level spell.

Class Features:

Level 1

Familiar: A shaman or Wise woman receives a Familiar as per the Wizards Familiar.

Nature Sence, Wild Empathy, Orisons.

Level 2

Woodland Stride

Level 3
Trackless step

Level 4
Resist Nature’s lure

Level 6
Combat Style Feat: archery Gains feats at levels 6,8,10,14,18

This of course is a first draft. Please let me know what you think.
I have taken from the Druid / Shaman Wise woman. Nature’s Bond, Whild Shape, Spontaneous Casting Summon natures ally

I have given the Shaman/ wise woman, the stealth skill, a wider weapon selection, and the Ranger’s Combat style: archery.

I have replaced the Natures bond with an Arcane Familiar, I have replaced the Druid’s spell casting with Spontaneous spell casting of a sorcerer,

I would like to know what you think. This is supposed to be a support character, with the flavor of a Druid, but simpler to play. I am not trying to re-invent the wheel, maby just changes some of the spokes around.

Thanks.

Please let me know what you think. This class needs first a name, and allot of improvement. oh and the numbers did not line up. the table i had them in was lost in the transition.

I kind of agree with your premise re: female players, but think that having a friendly "Mr. Bear" along is one of the reasons they choose druid in the first place, almost like a protective totem, so "they" don't have to fight. YMMV, of course.

Boards ate my post...

I would use an oracle with set revelations from the life and nature mysteries and no curse. It spontaneously casts. It has less fiddly abilities and you can cover the bases:

1) Animal companion is an option
2) Your weapon expertise is an option (look at the battle mystery for example)
3) Channel is a good, less fiddly heal.
4) Other misc. life oracle stuff.

My girlfriend plays druids exclusively... well, except that ONE time she played a favored soul, but whatever. Her reasoning is (you nailed it) the Mr. Bear deal. However, she enjoys wild shape because she can turn into a "copy" of said bear. She actually chose to play a Bear Shaman this time around (since I got the APG) and she loves it, but I agree that there is way too much built into a druid for people who play the way she does.

I really wish there was a beastmaster DRUID variant (I really dislike the ranger variant). One with just wild shape and a pet, and maybe a few spell like abilities to cover up the loss of spells. Maybe some cure spells, and speak with animals... entangle... the "essentials" or the spells that define the class.

I'm still trying to get her to understand how wild shape works for the shaman variants at level 6. She's pissed that she can't turn into Large animals other than bears(which are Huge instead, so that she skips the large/tiny stage). [sigh] She can be kinda dense...

Ranger spells sound like what you want as far as that goes, some core stuff, but nothing much.

There was a 3.5 Unearthed Arcana Ranger version that took away a Ranger's bonus feats and gave the ability to wildshape into small and medium animals.

Maybe ranger spells, BAB, HD, and full druid wildshape and a pet at -3 is fine. No ranger feats or favored enemy.

Thank you for your posts.

Some of my ideas were to try and make a “simpler” druid for a novice (female) player.

I picked the Spontaneous casting, because I thought that would be easier to understand. Ie at first level your character knows 2 first level spells, and 4 Orisions. He can cast the orisions at wil, and you can cast two 1st level spells, any from the onss you know.

I thought that would be easier.

I took away the wild shape, the Spontaneous Summon Natures Ally and the Natures bond, because I thought they made the character class very complicated

I replaced Natures ally with Arcane bond “ Familiar.” I thought a player might like a little animal like a bird, or ferrit, or rabbit or something, that could act as a friend ( as the familiar gets more intelegent, and can talk with its master,) and I thought it would work well as a souct.

I put in the Cure spells as spells know, to help with the support healing aspect,

I threw in the Combat Style archery to in small way make up for the loss of wildshape.

How can I improve things, what might be a good name for the class?

Thanks. I see it’s the MR bear, that they like. Thanks.

Well ill chew over this idea a little more. Thanks for your thoughts

I'd love to see this posted at the Pathfinder Database.

Sometimes simpler classes are a godsend for new players.
